  • Re: Karizma/Karizma R

Going through the Thread I've found answers to a lot of questions about the ZMA-R.
I was not happy with the AFR setting mech had done as the engine used to heat up pretty quickly.
I decided to do it as per PSR's advice of 3.5 turns from full lock (even though his findings were 2.5 turns for 2011 onwards models, I preferred a cooler and more responsive setting as suggested.)

Result: Engine runs cooler and is much smoother revving and responsive than mechanic's setting ( which was more than 4 turns).
Idle is also steady and with a consistent beat.
FE has also improved by about 3 km/L.
Thanks PSR and everyone who contributed regarding the different AFR settings for different year models

However I now find that the bike doesn't start without choke when cold whereas it used to start without choke too in mechanic's setting. Is it because his was a lot richer thus negating the need for choke?

You usually need to give choke at 2.5 - 3.5 turns, for a few seconds while starting. It'll soon become routine.

You guys are lucky out there. Never came across something like that here in Mumbai. I'm running around for a right-side Candy Red 225 fairing piece since more than a month now. The best of the dealers dont have them. And they have a premium price of 1650/- a piece. Whereas the latest running colours are about 1150/- a piece. Stealing in its purest form. F^^ck Hero Moto and their high handedness :/

Problem solved!! First I cleaned up an old carb I had with me and also specially removed AFR screw and cleaned it with petrol and cleaned whole carb and fitted it on the bike. See, I had this carb removed for similar problems as I have now and since present carb still has it, I concluded that my old carb was not bad after all. Instead it gave better overall performance. Anyway, this change solved the erratic idling and slight knocking problem completely. Now I was left with the infrequent hiccuping while pulling off from standstill and also stalling sometimes.
Next, I changed the HT Coil and plug cap(waterproof plug cap from the CBZ Extreme) with new ones, and Voila!! Bike changed into almost Unicorn like smoothness and all problems magically erased!!! Run for more than 150kms now and its superb. Not a single hitch now. You guys can try changing just the plug cap for starters and check, as the stock hard plastic type ones tend to get shorted. I changed the HT Coil too since the wire was all cracked up.

Yeah, Spark Plug cap. HT coil is the thingie from which the wire runs into the Spark Plug. Its a small cylindrical part which supplies the spark plug its current. Its white in Zma and Black in unicorn I guess

No theory but pure practical experience. Personally won't recommend stock for overall usage.

For a while I faced bike wobbling problems, eventually narrowed it down to the stock tyres. They just feel too 'slippery' even at slow speeds, not to mention highway (80+) speeds.

That's why the ZMA, it tends NOT to skid, unless one goes wild with it.

It is very dependant on tyres!
Of course weight etc are factors, but if the tyres themselves are terrible, the other factors will be magnified.
The tyre pressures are supposed to be 25/29 solo and 25/33 with pillion. Always decrease by 1 PSI if you're going on the highway since the pressure will increase due to the air heating up when going at speed continously.

They don't feel too comfortable for me even at slower speeds in the dry. Haven't had the opportunity to ice skate yet . I don't plan on finding out either!

The Michelin M45 rear tyre is the best for the Karizma. It has lots of grip; unfortunately, its discontinued now.
I've found out that they aren't offering much grip even at sane speeds.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the ZMA tyres? Is shifting to a 110 profile instead of 100 a good idea? I've been following the tyre thread, but something more specific to the ZMA would be perhaps more useful.

                      Ignition Coil- 305/-
                      Spark Plug Cap- 65/-
Please get genuine ones as these are critical components and as far as I've experienced you will never get the original feel of the bike if you go for cheap spares as far as Hero Honda and Honda are concerned. Dunno about other brands.

I'll try changing the ignition coil since I already have a similar spark plug cap as hero's. Thanks

Given the fact that yours is a 2005 Unicorn its probably the carb. When a Unicorn carb starts acting up, things get really dirty. Two of my friends with 2005 Unicorns have changed theirs and live happy lives now. My 2006 Unicorn carb went kaput in 18 months only. At that time I changed it for 2400/- today it might cost almost double that. I would suggest putting a carb from a properly working friends Unicorn and testing if possible before spending. Just to be sure.

Minor disaster, after serious cold start issues I was fiddling with the idling and the screw that controls it just fell off. Since then two hours of trying to fit it back on have been fruitless. The Screw itself is undamaged but it just doesn't seem to fit back in

You must have bent the tip. Even if the tip is bent by a hairs width, you'll have problems with the bike. You seem to have bent it more than a bit. The AFR screw is spring loaded, so it must have jumped out when you loosened it... At least now you should get professional help

Not the AFR, the idle screw. It is also spring loaded. With a bit of patience, you'll be able to fit it on.
