    • @SKR
no dude , no research done , nor thanks to any diasil .

I dont see nothing wrong in synthetic oil being used from the word go .
Either ways , these engines are meant to take loads and wear and tear from the beginning .So synthetic shouldn be a problem.Nor ur gonna rev it to 10k in the running in even on mineral oil.
      • The lower friction may make them unsuitable for break-in (i.e. the initial run-in period of the vehicle) where friction is desirable to cause wear. Improved engine part machining has made break-in less critical than it once was, though. Many modern cars now come with synthetic oil as a factory fill.
wiki itself says this , then Y not use syn ???
My intention is not to say tnt is wrong or right .
But Y , lets get the actual reason behind it .

Will get to office n reply. Cab's come :-)

Coz ur 2nd query had posive answers.

Yes! U can have shorter exhaust..
Though that too would need some tuning but after that ur ride would be meaner, faster, stronger, leaner and many more "er"..
But if tuned in the right way!

U wouldnt get the company finish like the Fz series and R6 but u would get the steelish look or daytonaish look..
        Bout the sound..man-o-man..
U shuld listen the grunt in em!!!

That sure sounds interesting.. however.. when you say the FZ series, are you referring to the bigger boys FZ6 and FZ1 or the FZ16 by any chance? Again, switching over to FZ 16's exhaust seems doing no benefit...would it? How good is an FZ16's exhaust compared to R1-5 anyways? (Lame question?)

I personally do not prefer the Daytonaish look at all (looks that is) .. however a steelish might still be fine. I'm just not into too much of a BlInG Effect myself ! More into a short n stylish way rather!

Anyways, guess I should surf through the FZ forum to find out anyone's done a gimmick to their exhaust systems to get a better power/performance, coz, personally, i really like the fit/finish and stye of FZ's exhaust to the core!

        • And to talk about clearances on the cylinder. There is about 20 to 25 microns of clearance which is good enough for you to run synthetic. . Its not that you use mineral oil and an additional 25 microns are gained at the walls of the cylinder . Rather the clearance reduces as the oil has a higher friction as compared to synthetic.
If there is residue wont it affect the ability to rev smoothly ? Or any of the moving parts for that matter ?

And yes about the yamaha mechanics they hardly have any knowledge about any of these oils . They tell u to pour in synthetic cos its costlier and has got a better margin for sales . They end up sayin its special oil for r15 .

            Wait! wait!
Am no way reffering to the Fz muffler..
I just wanted to give an example!

            What I meant was,.
Installing shorter exhaust (sumwhat like the daytona muffler kit for R15) would increase ur performance but it wouldnt be a perfect finish (not like the short xhaust u see on Fz and R6) but insted it would look steelish..
Though u can get it coted and hence better view and some lesser noice pollution!!

                • Thanks guys for clearing that up. The link says cars come factory filled with synthetic, but what is the oil that they have used for running it in at the factory? I guess its synthetic too, from the conclusions of the article. The illustrations made it easy to understand.

Ya you're absolutely right, yamaha mechs know just how to do their job (barely, not even including tappets :P) and cannot be counted on for technical information.

Still, I don't think using mineral first and shifting to synthetic is in any way detrimental rite? Have done 1.2k, running on 2nd load of Yamalube mineral oil 20w40.

Dude, i remember you had mentioned somewhere in this thread that after completing 2000 KMs, you revved your bike on every gear, and that now your engine is very smooth. I'm going to complete 2000 KMs soon and so I want to know what exactly you meant by that. How do you rev it on every gear? I mean, normally I change gears at around 4k rpm. Please shed some light.

I wanted to enjoy myself so did that&ended up getting the tappets loose!
I did a stricter run-in than what the manual recommends&I can say my engine is smooth enough, but I've seen some R15s ripped from the beginning&have a better initial pickup than mine. I haven't heard of anyone having a rough engine due to improper run-in yet. The vehicle is designed for ripping.
After trying out all types, I have settled down on changing gears at 4.5-5K RPM in traffic&5-6K RPM on open roads.

@Seamus: No drop in refinement levels.

@TnT: 30&35 works for me too, contact patch is less on cornering, but mileage&ride quality with pillion is improved.

                          • @All: How do I figure out if my R15's tappets are loose?
She has clocked 5.7k on the odo (I have been ripping her hard since she was at 2.5k)..

EDIT: She's been running on Mineral Oil (i doubt its of any consequence wrt tappets though) till date..

The pleasure is when your rear wheel slides, and you bring it back; and when the front wheel lifts, you take your time bringing it back.

It will be evident in idling itself, a loose marbles kind of sound.
