  • Hi!
I have a Pulsar 180cc, Crimson Red, UGIV bought on 1.1.2010, clocked 17K.

I have this weird problem with the bike. It started happening a 3 months ago.
one day I started the bike with the self-start. It didn't. I tried 3 times, but still, it gave back no positive response. The Self kept on going without the engine kicking in even once. Petrol was almost 8 litres. usually, when you push the self-start, the RPM needle moves a little bit around 500rpm, and when the engine ignites, the rpm needle revs up when we turn the throttle. But in my case, the rpm needle remained still.
Now, I showed to a local mechanic, who took out the spark plug and saw that there was no spark. I had BlackCat security installed. He advised me to remove that. I agreed. Still the bike didn't start.
Then pulled out the petrol pipe and said that the petrol might have been clogged.
    miraculously the bike started.
i took the bike to Bajaj's authorised service station near my home, in Rohini, Delhi.
The service guy there asked me to get rid of the petrol lock i had installed since the day I bought the bike, as the cases of petrol theft were on an increase in my locality.
It had been more than a year with that petrol lock, and I didn't think of any reason why would it give any problems NOW! Its a mechanical part, not an electronic or electrical part that might fail.
Anyways, I still allowed him to get rid of the petrol lock. The bike started.
Again, after a month or so, the same problem. Tried self-start for almost 10 times. No result. Local mechanic. He opened up the bike fullly. Removed the petrol tank and everything. Nothing happened. When he did put back everything, the bike started miraculously, yet again!!
Such incidents repeated with me every now and then for the past 5 months now..
Sometimes the bike started after I switched off the ignition and let it stand for about 10-15 minutes. Sometimes, it didn't.
Recently, the Bajaj authorized service centre guy asked me to get the rotor coil changed. It costed somewhere around 1600rs+taxes. I got it changed, with a heavy heart, of course. (i am not the one with deep pockets, )
Since then, the problem vanished. I was satisfied with it.
but then again, a couple of weeks ago, the problem surfaced again. I was fed up now. SERIOUSLY!
Sometimes the bike stopped midway into the journey too. The RPM needle used to go from 4 or 5, to ZERO in an instant..
    Everything made me MAD!
My friend suggested me to boggle the bike like a scooter.
I was so enraged by this behaviour of this bike, that I vigorously boggled the bike from left to right while it was on its center stand.
    VOILA! The bike started.
Now whenever that happened, I boggled the bike, and it started.
Then I took this bike to the same Bajaj Service Center in Rohini who changed the rotor coil. He said he would check, but that problem shouldn't come now.
I got the bike back today, and believe me, from the morning, till the evening, the bike stopped 5 times.. twice in the middle of the road, and 3 times on red lights, while idling after I rode the bike at speeds exceeding 70-80kmph.
This comes to me as a surprise as I have spent so much on this bike. And still, no service centre, or mechanic could find any solution to this problem of mine.

I hope, some of my brothers from other mothers are able to help me out on this, or atleast guide me to the right spot.

i was tuly fed up with this, and was about to sell off the bike for 45K. But then, it was my hard earned money, and I didn't want to give up on this bike without a hard fight!

    please Please please Please....

It seems to me as if the petrol is getting clogged, or it might be the case of vaccum build-up in the tank. Next time this happens open the fuel lid close it and then try starting the bike. It should'nt be a big problem.

      • Thanx abhichotu.abhi....
I started the bike in the morning to get it to the service station.
While I was riding the bike, and I reached right outiside my colony gate, the bike automatically stopped.. The RPM meter went down to ZERO.. Everything was still again.
I tried the self-start about 10 times.. But to no avail.
I did what you prescribed above, still no solution.
I showed it to the local mechanic who spent around half an hour inspecting every electrical part as he said that the spark plug is not getting any current.
So he even checked the CDI.. Washed it with petrol and all other parts.
After more than 1.5 hours, I tried to self-start it, without any anticipation of it starting, but it started!!
And when I rode it again for about a kilometre or so, it came to a stand still again...

Its becoming really very difficult to cope up with this.
I had to reach somewhere urgently, but was unable to go, and had to ask my brother to do the work for me.

Its a shame such prolific bikes behave in such arrogant manner..

The bike still stands quiet under my house. Its taking the self, but the engine is not igniting..

        Any more suggestions???

        • this was happpening to me when bike was new. some times behaved like time reached to turn my petrol cock to reserve. but there was enough petrol. reached s.c,and they said me as abhi said. but in my case, whenever bike shows missing just turned cock to reserve, just for 500 metres or so. then again will turn back it to main..then bike gone without trouble.. this happend for me many times. but now its clear. already ridden an empty tank platina doing this for about 10 kms, when i was stucked without petrol..you wont believe it,even i cant.i was turning the cock to main and reserve whenever occurs missing. dont know how this happend.but happend.
your case may be differ, but told just my experience connecting to this.

            • it's the catalytic converter.

the ticking sound is normal. (when the bike isn't running)

                    1. Yes petrol lock can become faulty. No big deal. But then again if it's faulty just check it by taking off the fuel pipe and see fuel coming out or not.

                    2. If coil wasn't working then battery should have drained completely and you shouldn't be able to switch on the headlight or even blow horns. It's clear that SC fooled you. (Well you're not alone here ). Anyway why you paid for something which was covered in warranty? SC was clearly making their business.

                    3. About fuel clogging up, I consider you are NOT filling from same station since 3 months. And anyway your mechanic might have cleaned the tank. I don't think fuel is clogging up. How? Do this simple test(only and only when your bike stops in midway). Switch to reserve. Just try to crank up once if it doesn't start, pull the choke, wait for 30 seconds and try to start again. Choke will make an additional one km range petrol available from carb's buffer. Now if bike starts within 2 cranks then yes petrol is clogging between tank and carb, case solved. If it still doesn't start then clearly petrol is not clogging up. Still for the time being don't visit any station you are visiting regularly.

                    4. Can you do one thing for me? tell me what's the latest highest speed?.. Using only first and second gear check whether bike can get 0 to 60 in around 5 secs? (Tip: switch to second around 30-35). Please do another test. Put bike on main stand. start it, switch to first gear. Keep RPM at 4K. and tell me for how long bike can run at 4K rpm?

                    5. From your post, I reckon A)Generally bike comes to halt at above 4K rpm. B)When it stops, it's actually like engine ignition being killed spontaneously rather than feeling like running out of breath or fuel.

                    6. I think bike control unit (BCU) is faulty. Because on the lower side of 100 KPH, at 4K RPM bike's vibrations are at pick. BCU is situated in headlight assembly. Due to the way headlight is connected to forks, those vibrations multiply and become strong resonance inside headlight assembly. Secondly in 99% P180s BCU tends to slip from its rubber strip harnessing because of lack of tension. It becomes free. Due to these facts I think your BCU has gone faulty and that's why it's sending killing code abruptly.

What now? SCs don't have facility to check BCU. Try convincing them to replace it under warranty. If they don't go visit pro biking and tell them BCU kills engine randomly, SC sent you to pro biking as they didn't have BCU in stock and it needs to be replaced (under warranty off course). Don't pay for anything!!!

Hope this helps. I'm expecting you to replay in detail.

It might also be the case that your Engine KILL switch is malfunctioning.
