• Re: Yamaha FZ-16/ FZ-S

I need to change the tyres on my bike. I have heard that it is always good to change the pair together. Is this true?
Currently running on stock tyres. MRF Revz 140/60-R17 and MRF Zapper 100/80-R17. These tyres have lasted me 30K kms which have included city roads, highways, twisties and off roading. I am more than happy with the performance and life across all these conditions. Hence, was preferring to get a new pair of the same. But have not been able to spot them at a few dealers. anyone from Pune who can help me with this?

A few dealers are suggesting Michelin Street and Sport. The dimensions for front match but that for rear are 140/70-R17. Has anyone used these set of tyres on their bikes before? Please share your experiences on the same. Are these soft compound? because they will be an issue in off-roading and life then.

I would prefer a 2 compound tyre, ideally.

Any other suggestions from anyone are also welcome. Please do not forget to mention the compound type, your experience with the tyres on different terrains and expected cost.

Hello Friend,

There is no such compulsion that you have to Change both the tires together .. It depends upon how many kms you completed and wear and tear of your tire.

The best and cost effective replacement for the rear will be stock.
However using a 140/70 17 is not bad either. First thing that will change is the height of your bike, you will feel the rise in height and the looks.. Fz starts looking more attractive.
Depending on the tire you select you will get the grip and confidence about your ride.
I have used pirelli sports demon which was most reliable so far. And currently using continental both are 140/70 17. But continental skids on dry cemented roads.. The company says it needs to be warm in order to provide proper grip.
I am not too educated about the compounds may be other colleagues can help you.

For the front tire you should not change the size at all.

• FZ16 front suspension issues and handle vibration.

Hi Friends,

I am experiencing a vibration and tak tak sound from my Fz16 handle and shocks also feels stiff. It is not good enough to handle small poth holes even at 30km/h speed.
I took the vehicle to Orion Motors Koramangala but they are not good enough to fix it. Kindly let me know what needs to be done and also suggest a good mechanic near by koramangala.

Hello Guys,

I am new to this forum and I have few articles but could not find answer for my scenario. My bike is a year old black FZ-16 - 13500 odd KMS with mileage around 40-43, serviced only in Yamaha center. I have mostly taken care of the bike but appears there is an issue now. My back tyre has worn off on the right side alone, buttons towards the left are a lot better. Now the bike skids a little on few roads and I guess it needs to be changed. Although am ready to do it, am circumspect to get into the same issue again. I wanna know how this could have happened and what I should be doing to avoid in the future.

Thank you.

tyre wearing out only on a particular side seems to be alignment issue.
ask your friend to ride your bike on an empty stretch and you ride behind him keeping a distance of say 30-40 ft and check if both tyre's seem to be inline.

can be incorrect chain slack and tyre tilted more towards the left.
can be front suspension rebound uneven putting more pressure on either side
else if you met with an accident or an severe pothole that might have had the fork's bent/mislaigned
if you ride with a pillion more often and they tend to sit the old indian way ( sitting sideways)
defective tyre..
bent/out of shape rim.
swing arm alignment. both the ends should be at equal length and equal height..
another not so common cause but still important is the twist in the drum brake alignment.
they can cause considerable amount of twisting when braking. causing the ride to budge towards right.
check the drum from inside and see the wear. if its even you are good.

check all these and revert back. these are all i can think of that can cause this issue.

this might be helpful for you get an insight of tyre cupping and causes..

As said by the Mod, get the Cone set checked. The noise and stiffness in the front end are mainly due to loose/damaged cone-set.

Buy another stock horn and fix that one. Does the job pretty good.
or else install air-horns (roots, minda etc), but you would need to use a relay with those.

Ride safe and have fun.

Guys help me out
my bike front tires creating sound squeaking noise , like when metal to metal is rubbed when I use font disk brake
Bike is around 1year 6months , ODO meter 9300km. Front Disk Brake oil is at minimum indicator but little high . Observing 3days .
What might be the problem. Is it time to change the front disk pad or just a normal clean up around disc pad.

Also, when I ride bike at start ,my bike engine shuts down when changing gear at lower rpm or taking turn in lower speed around 10-20kmph. But the fact I noticed when Bike engine is hot with normal riding or using choke 3-5 mins problem is gone. Is it the engine oil problem. Using Motul 7100 20W50

Have you checked the brake pads ? if not, they why not ?
They might be worn out and hence the metal part would rubbing directly with the disc.

About engine shutting down, can't say anything for sure.

There are 2 possiblities.
1. There can be sand particles struck in the brake pad and are creating the sound. If so it only requires cleaning of the brake pads.
2.Your disc brake pad are completely worn out. Please change them immediately. Because the abrasive material in the pad are fully consumed and only the metal plate of the disc pad is available. The brakes will not work and can lead to an accident. so don't delay.

As for the engine shut down I think you have changed to Fully Synthetic oil sooner(i.e) 9300kms. Normally it will be recommended to a bike which has crossed atleast 15000 kms. It is only my thinking seniors please advise.

accuengineer.. Ya, normally fs shouldn't be used this soon in our bike. But that won't explain the engine shut-down.
Maybe his idle rpm is set low, then also the bike would shut off at low rpm's.

Idle RPM may not be the culprit as he is on the move. Once when I was riding my bike in 60kms/h and was in the 3rd or 4th gear. I had to take a sharp turn so slowed down to almost 10 to 15 kms/h. The bike shut down due to the higher gear. I did not down shift the gears that also can be the problem.
@bikashnayak I suggest you change over to SS oil Motul 5100. And see if the bike behaves better.
