Can u tell me the price of the whole set.. Thanks.
You didn't tell us till how many kms you have done with current chain sprocket. The tak tak sound might be because of chain sprocket got worn-out and these might be the reasons for it.

    1. Might have worn-out by completing its stipulated duration

    2. SVC guys might have replaced any one or more of the items with set with old ones (either cheating or by mistake)

    3. Manufacturing Defect

Anyways changing the chain-sprocket set will get rid of that sound which costs around ~ Rs. 1200

Actually i got a used bike. Currently the odo reads 19845 and the last owner told me that he changed the chain sprocket set at around 14000 kms. But he also said that this sound has been there since he changed the sprocket set. The service center guys told him to change the sprocket set even though it was alright, says the last owner.. But he changed them as he was unaware of its situation.. I think he got faulty sprocket set, hence that sound. So planning to change the whole set eventhough the current set has just run around 6000 kms. M confused what should I do??

If the "Tak , Tak " sound you get is periodic, and varies with speed, suspect the chain joining link....it is the link with clip used to join the two ends of the chain...the spacing and rollers of this link fails under stress and every time it crosses the sprocket teeth you will get the sound...

Secondly I want to know what are the factory settings for the Carburator Air fuel screw, I mean how many turns it need to get the optimum performance & FE from the stop. As per the service manual (workshop manual) it should be +- 3 turn from stop. My bike used to run in 3 turns, is there any good settings for the carb needed, lastly should I clean the carb now as it is already 10.5 k in the odo?
          Thanks in advance.

To the best of my knowledge the Timing chain tensioner is not to be adjusted manually , and it is self adjusting...which is why we call it "Auto tensioner".Only at the time of removal of bore is the tensioner removed ,after release of tension, and no mechanic will normally do any adjustment in it.
Most carburetors have a screw at the bottom of the Carb., on the lower bowl, which is there to drain the sediments in the bowl at periodic intervals. This will depend upon the quality of fuel(amount of debris in fuel ).The sediment flushing is done by FIRST closing the Petrol tap, and then turning the drain screw anti clockwise .The petrol, along with sediments will flow out and the float bowl will become clean. Then the drain screw is tightened properly with just enough torque .

Thanks PSR ji for your inputs... would request you to kindly throw a light on the expected life of a cam timing chain...

              Thanks & Cheers,
It is difficult to predict the Timing chain Life, because it depends on many factors like oil quality, grade and frequency of change, type of riding, condition of Cam and rockers, and also of valves free movement......apart from these the quality of the chain and the Auto Tensioner's pressure, and condition of the chain guides inside.
At an approximate guess estimate a good engine with proper maintenance will see 40~50 K Kms of Timing chain life.

I dont think there is a master link in the chain of FZ.... i had to change it after removing the entire left front footpeg, and the rear tyre hugger....

the tak tak sound comes when the chain has loosened up just tighten it and see if there is no more room for tightening the chain change the whole set of sprocket and chain....

Yes you are right ...there is no master link, sorry my bad..and thanks for the correct info.
Better to check for chain stretch,by measuring the length of any 15 continuous links .It should be max 191.5 mm, and anything more indicates a stretched chain, and needs replacement along with both sprockets.

Thank u for the suggestions. Actually as i mentioned earlier too the chain and the sprocket set has just done around 6000 kms max after replacement. The sprocket still looks new and the teeth seems alright. Can i just change the chain and check?? Is it worth? Thanks.

The problem what I think of is the chain has developed loose and tight spots.. happens due to uneven lubrication for long durations.
I also think that the previous owner just changed the sprokets.

Try installing a complete set now. Save the sprokets, may be they are just fine..

What to do with the spare sprokets?? humm.. No idea.

                        • Modifications for FZ16

                          Hi fellow Xbhpians,

I'm looking for some mods on my FZ16. Not major but still modifications though

                          Spark Plug
I'm thinking of NGK. Can some please tell me the exact NGK Spark Plug model number for FZ16. Any experienced reviews are welcome. Any other better brand?

                          Engine Oil
My beast has done a little over 20k on ODO, now I'm looking for engine oil change. I'm thinking of MOTUL. Which MOTUL engine oil would be good for my FZ16 (for butter smooth riding)? Members can share their experience of MOTUL in their FZ16. Any other better brand?

                          Carb Tuning
I feel the bike is not performing close to its levels and I (personally) feel that my beast requires a bit of Carb tuning. Any leads on good mechanic (experienced in Carb tuning for FZ16) in Bangalore? Would really appreciate if the mechanic is located somewhere close to Banashankari.

That's why m thinking of changing the chain only and see.. anyways thanks for the advice.

How about having this on my fzs??

Park the Bike in main stand and with engine off and gear in neutral, spin the rear wheel in anti clockwise direction and observe the chain....Does it go up and down periodically by more than an inch ? and do you see it jump ie., suddenly having twitching while rotating ?
If you have periodic up down movement then the rear sprocket is worn
If you have chain twitching suddenly then your chain does not have proper, and full length lubrication....leading to links not being free to flex....or sprocket teeth is chipped or broken.

Thanks for the advice. I went to a mechanic a while ago and told him to change the whole chain sprocket set as i had got one by myself. Before changing he opened up the front sprocket, flipped it to the other side and told me to take a ride. I rode the bike and the sound was gone. I returned home being surprised to see this... Now i dont think i should change the whole set, should I??
