    Please re-think.

Even if you go for R15 then welcome to R15 Family.
Ermm , I actually have extensively ridden the R15 , I believe it will be a smooth transition. But then again the FZ-16 still is an amazing ride ... will miss this one big time ...

    • Yamaha FZ 16 alternative Tire Options & 20,000 kms of journey so far!!

      Hi All,

Today i finally went for window shopping for alternative rear tire/tyre options for Yamaha FZ16/Fazer along with Abhimanyu31 and Mitz. Would sincerely like to thank Mitz and his friends (sorry couldn't remember the names of all whom you've introduced!!). Abhimanyu31, ended up replacing his stock MRF tires which served him a good 17,000 kms on his Yamaha R16 (Joell'ed, RC). He decided to go ahead with IRC: front and Pirelli Sports Demon in the rear.

Anyways, as promised here are the details of the rear tires which i feel are a good replacement in place of stock MRF tires on FZ/FZ-S/Fazer:

      TIRE BRAND, NAME SIZE, PRICE(MUMBAI)

      1) Dunlop Tuff Grip, 140-70-17, Rs. 3000/- (Metro Tyres):
This tire according to me is the best replacement one can opt for. Has a medium hard rubber structure and the profile of the tire is pretty close to what stock MRF is (140-60-17). Can handle tarmac and decent amount of Off-Road. First 4 pics attached are of Dunlop Tuff Grip. I would highly recommend this tire as an alternative replacement especially for all those who are sick and tired of putting up with stock tire punctures!!

      2) Kings, 130-70-17, Rs. 2800-3200/- (Metro Tyres)
This is relatively a new name in the market atleast for me. Has a harder rubber compound and grooves are made especially for Off-Roading. I have heard good reviews of this tire. However the tire size is of 130 profile and as per my conversation with Abhimanyu31 will definitely alter the way the bike would behave in corners and being of harder compound will have comparatively lesser grip on wet roads. However, this will eat Leh-Ladakh for breakfast and ask you to bring it on, give it the toughest off-roading roads mother nature has to offer. pics 5-8 are of kings tire.

Besides these two brands, one can also look for DURO (Dunlop sold as Duro in other Asian countries), CEAT Vertigo (good off-roader!!), TVS Eurogrip PANCER (120-80-17 i think!! one will have to get rid of the rear tire hugger though to fit this one) and Kings (is of soft rubber, i have no clue on the this one!!) These brands are good but most of them are of hard compound so not suitable for high speed cornering.

Overall, i feel Dunlop Tuff-Grip would be the best Tarmac to Off-Road tire to choose from. please do note (Dunlop Tuff-grip doesn't have ISI Mark so may not be available with newer stock.. however, if you can source out one.. just grab it!! good buy!!)

      Hope This was helpful!!!

      20,000 kms ride report!!
My FZ-X has finally crossed 20,000 kms on the ODO and to celebrate this occasion she decided that she wants a new rear tail brake light which went KAPUT just a few minutes back!! So would request anyone who has done a replacement of the same to kindly give the details of the bulb make, wattage and any preferred brand.. i would gift her a new tail brake light on Monday!!.

She is rev happy and fun to ride.. engine and gear shifts are butter smooth since, the day i have owned her.. and Abhimanyu31 can vouch for it too!

      Cheers,

The SVC guy said if he tightenes the rear brake then I'd be back to square one. I took a test ride and found out that it now takes a little more time to stop after braking. Also, riding in the first gear feels a bit harsh than before.

        • Glowing Logos

The LED side markers which are the glowing yamaha logos on the side fairings cost about 1000 in the Showroom.
Where can i get them cheaper?
I saw those logos in this video.

Bike was very rough, seemed more like a carb issue. Loss of pickup when the throttle is released for a few seconds and reengaged?????
Major issue, still burning engine oil... Lost almost 150 ml, also smoking...
Looks like I need to change the valves and also recheck the cylinder head..
            sounds like rings.
get a compression test done dry.
then squirt a little oil inside the bore via the spark plug hole, then retest for compression.
If the reading has a higher psi, then its your rings. If its the same, its your vavles.
what was your fuel mixture? rich or lean?

Ah well I am getting my block piston, valves as well as the valve assembly redone... Would have got it done today if they had the cylinder in stock... Same old story.. a few parts are out of stock..

              • thanks shv18 and other contributers for the post on tyres..
The kings tyre was a big finding for me.
Just wanted to ask whether the dunlop tuf grip is a soft compound or medium? As some other thread reported it as a soft compound..i think it was danny's thread.
Would be really nice if we can get a medium compound in that size.

                • @shv18: That was nice and detailed report on FZ tyres. Good one.

I got my front tyre 100-80-R17 replaced at 30K Kms Yesterday for 1900 Rs from MRF Dealer at Chembur. I opted for stock as it served me good and without any issues. Rear one was replaced under warranty from MRF at 16K Kms and can still last 5-6K Kms more.

Thanks Muztariq. When i enquired from the dealer he did mentioned it to be medium hard compound. PSDs are proper soft compounds. Regardless when i thoroughly checked it, the tire did seem to have more "meat" in the center. . For add on protection against punctures i would always recommend using Ride On TPS. Or if Ride on is not available then slime (However, have heard reviews from people about Slime, that it tends to slowly corrode the inner rims after a certain no. of kms!! Personally very happy with Ride On for over 9000 kms now..) Duro brand also has soft compound tires however if i were to go for softer compound would rather choose stock MRF then.

Thanks RAK. Front tire stock MRF is good, hasn't given me any problem either!! Off-roading tires one can either go for Ceat Vertigo or Kings. Both have good grooves on them and are very capable off-roading tires.

thank you for the details. the Kings deftnly is a new find and a interesting option. curious to know more. do you have any more info/pictures on these? if so please do share. the profile looks similar to the stock i.e flat and not round/curved. so should make the tyre look fat. how would you rate it on fatness compared to the stock one?

Well i don't remember exactly now but definitely more or less equivalent to the stock tires. Being 130-70 in nature.. the gap between the tire and hugger will be pretty close. However, being of harder compound will be definitely more resistant to punctures and a good off-roader.

Having said that, i repeat again.. because the rubber is hard and 130 profile of the tire, the handling characteristics of the bike will change slightly. The tires will need more run on journey to warm up so don't expect to do crazy leaning on the corners like you would on your stock or one may expect loss in traction. otherwise for city commute and off-roading the tire is very good. Alternatively one can also look for Ceat Vertigo which, if i am correct comes with the same 130-70-17 profile like Kings and has a very good review. The tire vendor didn't have a sample with him at that time but i have seen a lot of of FZs running on this tire and the reviews have been good.

Just be aware, not all blocks, rings, pistons, conrods, cranks are the same.
There will be minor variations in the size. Ask your mech to mock build the engine with modeling clay pushed into the piston valve reliefs to make sure the valves don't hit the piston.

Make sure the measurements are all within spec and the parts will play nicely.
This will ensure you won't get seized pistons, bent valves, scored blocks etc.

                            • Engine smoothness problem in Yamaha FZ-S

                              Hi All

I'm riding a 2009 Yamaha FZ-S which is bought in second hand. Its odo is 18000 kms. The engine is good and I ran 2000 kms.

But while changing gears and accelerating I'm getting beating sound. I need a refined sound like the one coming from Honda (Unicorn/Shine).
Will it be possible in FZ's??

The performance is getting reduced when riding with a pillion rider. The change is noticable. Is it common in all FZ's??
My tyre pressure is 30psi front and 35psi rear. Stock tyres (rear is new one).

Also please let me know how long can I ride the bike legally without name change (RC, Insurance).

                              Thanks in advance
                              2009 Yamaha FZ-S

                              The ultimate machine to ride!!!

                              • HI guys just a small update from me , clocked 28k

                                have replace below items.

1.New fuel tank --- need to change as it was rusted cleaned twice but again rust.
2.Fuel cock assay ----unable to get filter which is present inside hence need to change full unit.
3.air induction system ---- lately was hearing phut phut sound from silencer SVC asked me change AIS and yes they were right i checked with my local mec he opened it and guess what there is a small screw which holds the pump was out of it socket hence the pump was not functioning as expected.(will upload the pic once i replace it)
4.spark plug & air filter ---- though i should get it changed after 28k.
                                5.Motol 300v FS ---- wanna try FS.

                                Pending items

replace front and rear tyre .most probably will go with stock tyres.
cost around 4900rs ( metro tyres --grant road)

                                just a suggestion

we should not change only rear tyre of the bike it really does make a difference in handling as rear tyre becomes more grippy and front tyre tends to slide a bit while cornering.have experience that with my old pulsar hence replacing both.not sure how many of you will agree with mee.
