Re: Honda CBR 250R
I'm in love with my bike
One of common words used by us bikers but I really fell in love with it now. The reason I'm sharing this feeling with you guys is that I'm from Chennai and I live in area called Velachery anybody who is aware of these two words will know if you don't let me explain, for almost 2-3 weeks Chennai is flooded by rains and most of the area's are in knee deep water and Velachery is one of the worst effected areas and this is the place where we gave birth to OLA boats.
In last 2-3 weeks my bike which is 2011 model has held pretty great there's not a single time that the bike stalled and even after being in water most of time it just starts with one press of button. I ALWAYS DIDN'T LIKE THE DESIGN OF EXHAUST but now it make sense
and I'm glad that I didn't go for after market ones.

Re: Honda CBR 250R
I had the same experience. My exhaust was fully covered by water, that the engine sound changed to like it was underwater. But I gunned the engine and got out without a problem. There was a pulsar nearby which also escaped. But the activa aunties and the matchbox cars were left stranded.

Re: Honda CBR 250R
Totally agree sir. I experienced it yesterday. Took me 3 hours to reach home from Ascendas, Taramani to Valasaravakkam. Went through knee deep water opposite Cancer Institute near side entrance of Anna Univ and Madras Univ. Bike went without any problem. Then due to traffic had to go through West Mambalam and in one road I had gone assuming knee deep water but at one point turned out to be thigh high water. Raised accelerator and went through that road without any problem. Able to ride today without any odd noises or any problems. The upward facing silencer is a boon in such situations. :-)Originally posted by Dandamudi Mohan Krishna View PostI'm in love with my bike

Re: Honda CBR 250R
Yes, its build like tank for sure.
Last week I happened to be in much worse condition (close to an engine sieze) more due to my stupidity than the rain water.
Will try to share a detailed post by this week (office work pressure).
The bike looks like its not afftected at all. And yes i love it more than ever.

Re: Honda CBR 250R
Hi guys,
My 2nd service is due this weekend and I am planning to take my bike to Didar Honda,Egmore,Chennai.
Just one query: I have 2litres of Shell FS oil and will they allow changing to Shell Oil and Oil filter in SVC?. If not, is it possible to buy oil filter from SVC? so that i can do the process myself.
Regards,
Sumanth.

Yes!! That shouldn't be a problem at all at the SVC.Originally posted by Sergeant_DawG View PostHi guys,

And yes, You can do it by your self as well. The Honda Manufactured Oil Filter would cost around 200 odd Bucks' There are plenty of Videos out there that will guide you on the process, however if your unsure any local Bike wala can do it for 20-30 Rs
Here's one
Alternatively, you can get the oil filter of the Yamaha FZ-16 as well, its a direct fit and costs around40-50 Bucks' Good Luck @Sergeant_DawG

Re: Honda CBR 250R
Hi All,
Most of you are aware that Chennai has faced heavy rain fall last week, and Day before yesterday I made a big mistake of not judging the depth of water present on main road correctly. I have travelled on that same road the day before with no problem crossing the water, but overnight water level has raised. And me stupid enough to cross the water with my beloved Beast.
Beast quenching its thirst with water because of my stupidityAir Box and Electrical check
I am already sure that the water had entered the engine through Air box, so I have quickly removed the seat and the air box cover, as expected the air filter was wet and hence removed it. I then checked the electrical system for abnormal behavior by turning on the ignition switch and check the functionality of horn, indicator and other lights. luckily (again) everything seems okay and functioning normally. I also checked with toggling the Kill switch to check if the fuel pump is working normally.
Engine check
Plunge into the water againFirst Aid for the Beastshv18experiment with his CBR from the beginning, as this helped me in choosing the oil for the job. I have travelled to nearest ATM first to get sufficient cash, and headed straight to get 3 Liters of Shell Rimula R4 (cost 990Rs.) in one of the nearest retail shop. Once returned to my beast, I tried to remove the drain bolt with the supplied 12mm spanner, but due to non-availability of paddock stand and being on the road side I could not remove it from the awkward angle, and the supplied spanner is slipping from the bolt and damaging its head. As a Maruti service center (again closed due to water entering the service bay) is available nearby I went to the service manager for borrowing a box spanner, who was kind enough to check the availability for a 12mm box spanner from the tool box and provide me the same. With the box spanner I could remove the drain bolt with no effort and not damaging the bolt head.
My heart almost stopped to see only water coming out from the drain hole for the initial few seconds and then came the white fluid (which is oil mixed fully with the water). I felt bad to drain the oil directly to the road without collecting it in a container for proper disposal, but I had no other option to do it at that time. Tilted the bike on either side to drain as much oil as possible. As per my observation around 2 liter of fluid must have been drained from the engine, which means quite an amount of water must have entered the engine. I have not brought the oil filter nor I have a spanner (8 mm, I guess), so I did not bother to open the oil filter cap. Once the oil is drained I have closed the drain bolt along with the old washer, and I have approximately pored one and half bottle of HEDO engine oil into the engine.
Starting the Engine
I have pressed the started button expecting that bike will not start with the first attempt, and it did not start as expected. With few seconds gap between the next attempts, I have opened the throttle fully and pressed the start button and kept the button on hold for 5 to 6 rounds of cranking. Repeated the same step for 3 more times and the bike started with rpm varying from 1000 to 2000. To keep the bike in running condition I have opened the throttle to hover the rpm around 3000 rpm for few seconds and closed the throttle completely. By now the bike is idling at 1500 rpm without any huge variation. I have waited for few mins and allowed the new oil to circulate to all the engine components.
Second Oil change
I was keeping an eye on the oil inspection window and also observing if there is any change in the sound from engine. The Oil color has changed very quickly from its light amber to milky white, but engine is running as nothing had happened which is the bright side. After few more mins I have stopped the engine and started the procedure to drain the oil for next oil change. This time when the drain bolt was removed, only white fluid (again mixture of oil and remaining water) was drained. After tilting on either side to drain as much oil as possible, I have bolted the drain bolt back and poured the remaining one and half bottle of HEDO oil into the engine.
This time the bike started with first crank and quickly settled to the idling rpm. For few mins I left the engine to idle for the new oil to circulate, and I was packing the tools and getting ready to commute to office. My friend was with me the whole time and assisting me in the complete process, and once packed and ready we started from that place. During the 10 odd Kms, I kept the bike under 5k rpm to avoid suffocating the engine through the wet air filter.
Once I reached office I have checked the oil inspection window and I found only white foam sticking to the glass. I opened the oil filler cap and I could see the foam has coated all possible areas that I could see. As I was already late to office I closed the filler cap and left to my desk thinking that I might need to drain this oil too as soon as possible.
Oil condition after second oil change. Note there is not much of a difference to the oil color between the first and second change
(Me changing oil on road side, and down are approx. 3L of drained oil + water)
Third Oil Changeshv18on oil filter change procedure and his experiment in using FZ oil filter in CBR), I have placed the new oil filter and replaced the oil filter cap and bolted it securely. With drain bolt in place, I have filled the engine with 3rd set of fresh HEDO oil, cranked the motor to life and kept it idling for few mins.
In the mean time I have started to look into other areas to make sure that the oil change was done properly, during this I observed small amount of smoke coming from under the engine. Upon closer observation I found that the old oil that drained from the oil filter area has spilled over the silencer, and started to smoke as the silencer is heating up. I have turned off the engine and started to clean up the area and continued inspecting the bike around radiator and cleared of small debris that got picked during the ride under water. No visible damage done to the fins or the other areas on engine.
Condition of oil through oil inspection window(1 day after 3rd oil change)
Condition of internals through oil filling cap(2 days after 3rd oil change)
(the foam that I have mentioned is half cleared)
view from a different angle
Condition of oil through oil inspection window(2 days after 3rd oil change)
I have felt for the n number of times that it could have gone much worse than the current situation, but the beast is now recovering much better that I have expected.
The following things need to be replaced (as per my knowledge) based on their availability, but please add if there is anything else that needs to be checked or replaced.
- Air Filter
- Another oil change with new oil Filter(I still have 1.5L of Rimula R4 in stock)
- Spark plug
- Throttle cable & clutch cable
- Both front and rear brake oils(regular maintenance)
I am still running with old air filter as it is still not available in 2 of my nearest service center, and even when ordered it will take 15 days to arrive. I am not riding the bike past 5K rpm to make sure that dirty air filter is not suffocating the engine.
This weekend I will be travelling to my native for a family function. So I need to go for a air filter hunt once I return back. I will also get the bike serviced from the service center once I return from native.
With this incident now am trying to avoid all kind of patches where water is logging
during my ride. Even though I have put the engine under this much stress, it is behaving normally as nothing has happened, this shows that the engine handle anything that's thrown at it.
And sorry for a long post. This is the first long post of mine, so please forgive me if I have made any mistakes.

Re: Honda CBR 250R
good to see that engine is back and running however let me tell you a few things. had cylinder block been flooded with water there was no possible way the piston or atleast the gasket would have survived it. even a few drops going inside the burning engine they will turn into steam and you are looking at gasket blows, bent brokn valves and worse.
what i assume is the spark plug got water which let the engine shut down and the exhaust was all full with water which suffocated it.
avoid such situations. and change oil again soon."A good long ride can clear your mind, restore your faith, and use up a lot of fuel."

I too suspected that the cylinder and piston might have suffered damage when water entered the running engine. But i think the engine was shut down before the permanent damage was done, and the water entered through any of the open valve as i was pushing the bike in water.
And yes i will definetly aviod being in such situation..

Re: Honda CBR 250R
You are lucky that you did not get water in the upper cylinder area..If you had, then engine would have "Hydro Locked". ie., the water in upper cylinder cannot be compressed, and if engine had continued to turn then the Connecting Rod would have bent into what is known as " Banana".. Most probably the water entering the Air Filter area had seeped through the engine breather tube into the Lower Half of Crankcase, which explains the White foaming...Originally posted by Iam_Hoodi_CBR View PostThanks theironhorse99,

Is it possible that my engine suffered a minor damage and its not showing any sign of it now? have I completely escaped unharmed
?
One more question, As you have said that the water did not get in the upper cylinder area, why did the starter motor cannot crank the engine during my first engine shutdown? I have gone through the link you have shared, in that its mentioned that 20 mm of water in a single cylinder can cause a "Hydro Lock"(for a boat engine) but in my case say a smaller amount of water has gone in to make the piston struck to the cylinder?
