  • My Experience while buying CBR250

Preface :Had a bad accident on my RTR180 just a day after my birthday. I took one month to recover from fracture and dislocated thumb. And still used the bike from Dec1st till 20th Jan for my office commute. During the crash it was mainly cosmetic damage which included, headlight covering, headlight glass, both leg guards, reserve fuel knob, rear view mirrors. Internally engine valve head was affected due to the impact while bike fell, also the engine head thread was gone so it was gone too. When I sold it the odo was around 70xxxx kms, and 6years of memories with it an numerous tours.

Confusion : I wanted to buy CBr250/ RC200 first but due to financial crunch I thought of getting R15 V2, but still people and friends were saying to check second hand market too for used CBR250R, and Duke390. I wanted faired bike and was clear in my mind not to settle for naked bikes , bajaj and tvs now. But my mom was apprehensive about used bike. So again I started saving for R15 and then this demonetise thing happened. So honestly, every thing went haywire and then I made up my mind to get used bike. Another reason to ditch R15 was , V3's launch and I could not wait that long for a new bike.

Bike Shortlist : I went to Karol bagh 2 weeks back just to ask whats the price range in which the bikes are available. got the bracket of 75-90k for CBR250R. I generally dont believe in the odo meter showing by the dealer as my friend's NS was sold at 43k on odo and next owner got it in 15k on odo. It all depends on physical assessment and test ride for few kms. Since I had no cash in hand, I came back after falling in love with HRC 2013 non abs model which was quoted 85k.

Two Weeks Later: 22nd January I got hold of 75k cash and finally decided to sell of my RTR then and there for atleast 10-12k as I know the engine leak and broken pieces will effect its selling price. I took Samrat and Yash (CBR owner), who also bought 2nd hand CBR from this market and I accompanied him during his buying ordeal. Also the reason for taking him was his bargaining skills.
I reached karol bagh on my RTR with Samrat as pillion at 12.15pm. I could feel the whole way that with pillion the bike is literally dying above 65kmph speed. As soon as I reached, saw the Repsol in one of the shops which was there last time. Now it looked good to me but I was still attached to HRC color. called the guy , his phone was off, went to his shop that 13 HRC and 12 Tri Color both have been sold. I was literally disheartened. In the mean time yash went and asked about Repsol, the guy quoted 95k. It was way out of budget from what I thought, also enquired about two more CBRs red and black but didnt like them. It was already 1pm and post sun light it would have been difficult to check the bike, so finally went to the Repsol , this shop is quite famous for SBK sales, one can easily see Intruder and Busa regularly here.

Now started the inspection of the bike, it had scratches here and there but the engine sound so smooth. Time to test ride and find out more about it.
    • No brakes, literally they were dead
    • Pass light didnt work
    • Indicator was flimsy

    Things that I liked
    • Engine was smoothest.
    • Body had very few scratches visible
    • carbon fibre treatment on lower cowl and tyre hugger + chain guard. (Site says repsol came with black things)

After 2 hour of bargaining we settled for 83k cash as the negatives will add 5k more from our pocket in service. By this time I was sure, I had to buy this bike, so started negotiation about RTR. He said 15k first and then after his test ride he came down to 10k, so in total I had to give him 73k cash and do all the formalities which added 150more which imo is ok.

Now coming to one thing that pissed me off, while all this happened he never said that he will take 2k as commission, because we knew its included in that price. So I paid just 1k. And because of this we made sure, he fills atleast 2ltr of petrol in it.

    So total paid
    73k for CBR
    1k for commission
150 for formalities at diff shop
    Odo reading : 23000km

Straight we went to mechanic shop to enquire about brakes, easily got hold of rear disc pads and DOT4 liquid but nowhere could find fron disc pads and original costed 2k. So spent 350rs on above mentioned and filled 300rs petrol and came home.
Also while coming back . noticed the throw of low beam is at level of high beam.

    Finally came home at 7.45pm.

Things I noted while riding it back home
    • The seat is too slippery, damn it hurts, you know where
    • The RVMs protrude so much that filtering is just not possible on this bike
    • The temp did increase, which I tackled and mentioned in last page.
    • The bike is big, not heavy for me, but being bike I have to be careful in city traffic.
    • The side stand is making the bike lean too much while using it, I guess the spring is at fault.

So that was all that happened this Sunday

2 Days Office Commute : Bumper to bumper traffic its equivalent to a car. I am still scared that the RVMs will hit someone or someone's car. The temp is in control for now. Gears are little hard, Shell Ultra will be used soon. Brakes too will be changed, Lights needs to be checked and re aligned.
Tried leaning a little bit, still will need some time to do a knee down, I wont try for next 1 month, thats for sure.

Prateek sir, agree that the rvms are a pain. With the rvms folded, the CBR can go through a gap just like a TVS 50. So far, I've hit 3 trucks, 2 buses, and numerous gates with the rvms.

Glad to hear that you settled down with a CBR finally. In the whole story I didn't find the CBR's ODO reading.

Guys, I have multiple bumps on the front tyre, like the swelling we get after banging heads on the floor/wall. I've not noticed any loss in braking or steering. What causes these bumps and should we change the tyre? It's 9k kms done Contigo.

I've had these bumps on the previous Contigo too, but rode them till 25k kms.

I love RVMs a lot, folding them will effect my view of the vehicle behind me, if its using dipper or not etc etc. Will find aftermarket ones soon.

Bumps are proof of damaged tyres. It can be dangerous while doing high speeds or maneuvers.

Na, wasn't telling to fold them. The zma or zmr mirrors fit the CBR and they're shorter.

                  That shouldn't be happening normally.
Try and get them replaced under warranty.
Or change over to the mrf revz fc/fc1.

                        Hey man, over here: https://www.honda2wheelersindia.com/cbr250r/colors

personally I suggest The Repsol edition, as it is orange, fading effect will be difficult to distinguish. Next best choice would be white, but it will get yellow-ish in long run if you dont maintain it well. Otherwise get a color of your choice but wax it every 3-4 days to avoid fading.

If you want to go for CBR, Go for ABS version only. Also check out Dominar 400 ABS, you might like it. If you can wait for a few months then Royal Enfields too will get Dual Disks & ABS.

Red. The red n black(engine/wheels) combo on the cbr imo looks nice compared to the other schemes.
A good proper wax and polish (not the pseudo 'teflon' coating or polish that the mechs apply..avoid those) every 6-8 months will keep it looking nice. Even after a couple of years, a good polish on a red vehicle will make it appear 'newer' than say a black or white.

If you do not face any issues during breaking or the bike is keeping it's line properly, I would like you to recheck the tyre properly. I have seen(many on this forum too observed from one of the very old pic) that some thread pattern creates an illusion of bulged tyres. So recheck and try to replace it under warranty.

2-3 hrs in sun is normal for any bikes in our country, if u take little care it should fine for any color, so stick to your favourite color option.

These small bumps could be structural deformities and represent damaged insides of the tyre.

I've noticed this on car tyre more often than motorcycles. http://www.freewayfastfit.co.uk/tyre...al-tyre-damage this link has a very small section about it. Please get the tyre checked from insides as well or replace it as soon as possible.
