  • Engine oil 'expires' in 6 months after replacement?

I have a question to the forum members, please help me out of your knowledge.

My bike's 1st service was done at 800km on July 29th 2011 1 month after the purchase. Engine oil was replaced.
2nd service was done on December 27th 2011 at 3300 kms.
Because, since oil replacement in 1st service, the bike had clocked only 2500kms, I insisted NOT to replace engine oil in 2nd service. My reasoning was one replacement had a range of 6000 kms. By the way, the oil is Honda 10W30 grade and fully synthetic.

However, the cheif mechanic in Silicon Honda Bangalore explained to me that it was close to 6 months since first replacment and the engine oil would 'expire' in 6 months though bike had not done 6000kms on the new oil.

The current oil in the bike has manufacturing date as May 2011 that I checked on the container. If the oil actually did, should have expired in October 2011!

I am confused. Any thoughts on this please?

I don't have a CBR but hope i can help.

Engine oil has a shelf life of around 5 yrs when stored in a sealed container away from elements such as direct sunlight, moist areas, etc.

That said, its better to change the oil if the bike is sitting idle for a year or so. In your case, you have used the bike and not stowed it away which does not warrant a change in the oil.

Better still you might want to drain the oil a bit and check if there are any residues in the oil, if it is sticky when rubbed between index and thumb fingers, has burning smell, color change to black, lumpy, etc. If none of these are observed, continue using the same oil, top up level if needed and change once every 5k kms at the least.

        Really well explained!
Btw, I often check the engine oil through the glass window on the engine for any drop below minimum level. I see the colour is golden brown yet and must be healthy.
Anyway, time to get my hands dirty to check other parameters as stickiness, residues, smell etc..
        Thanks a lot Aditya

        • CBRing to B'lore and back.

Hey folks, this is my very first travelogue.i have been planning for a long ride ever since i got my bike, but i never had the time to do it.So, to make this pongal special i thought of doing a solo 700 kms ride to b'lore and back. Before i get into the details of the trip a few basic things.
          1.total distance covered-700kms approx
          2.bike-Honda CBR250R(only 2 in srmc ;-) )
          3.destination-Bangalore city.
          4.time-4 1/2 hrs.

I started preparing for the trip a few days ahead, getting the bike serviced as its her first long ride, and fixing all the minor things. So,at 6-30am on the 14th of jan i started my journey........the traffic was thin but the road visibility was poor cause of boogie and the air was cold but burnt.past poonalmalle i entered NH 48 and cruised at 100km/hr till the toll gate and from there it was pure biking nirvana.the roads was smooth and no potholes and i thought to my self this is great, and then i felt the need for speed and i opened the throttle and RPM surged to 8500 and she bombarded to a quick 147km/hr i must say she was stable and well planted at tht speed. The sun was rising and through the thick air the rays of the sun pierced the smog and gave way to clear blue skys.
First stop was past vellor.Vellor was prity barren and dry,no trees.I stopped at a HP bunk and had my breakfast.I tanked her up again for 500 rs and hit the road.Passing ambur and into the heart of krishnagiri it was beautiful.with the morning sun kissing the hill tops and the morning dew still very young on the leaves ,krishnagiri had a lot of farming going on near the bypass.I could see acres of palms trees and others.even teak.Lots of truckers and the occasional old man and women who would cross the road.I maintained a speed of abt 110-130 kms on average as i couldn't resist the empty stretch tht lay ahead of me.And my bike wanted to munch the miles away.157kms to B'lore said the NHAI board on reaching hosur where i stopped for a short break and routine inspection of my bike.On entering hosur things were green again. The road sides were dotted with trees, cliff faces, and the roads went through the hills...very beautiful i call it 'road to Graceland'....the traffic started to get thick as i neared hosur.
With 50 odd kms to b'lore the ride was getting better.U can feel a change in the air,the chill the landscape and behold bangalore lay ahead.Screaming again at 140kms i took a turn at anakal to meet my cousin who was studying at alliance university.it was nice meeting her spent abt 45mins with her,and ya they make super tea there.Back on the road.Electronic city is the industrial area with a lot of IT AND MNC company's , nothing else. Past electronic city took the bridge to madivala and destination reached....first thing i noticed was tht i wasnt sweating, and the place is full of malls and lots of cops all over the place.Traffic was thick.M y friend met up with me at domuluru. In short i went to the secretariat, the lalbaugh garden, tried the metro(super cool) and went to brigade road and MG road.the crowed is full of young ppl, lots of life.Pubs clubs name it its there....
The return was on the 16th and since i was heading back i took it slow real slow.To be frank the ride back was bad,the road was bad and it felt annoyingly long.Overall i had a blast.and i was able to see and appreciate my country even though i just traveled 700kms.i must say i will cherish this ride.I think touring and travelling in general is unique and spiritual in its own way and my CBR made it happen for me...........so travel and see the world.
More rides and newer places soon,
          cheers

          Strike package.

Screw your courage to the sticking place.

If the oil still looks fresh (golden brown) then no need to check for viscosity, smell, etc. If the oil looks blackish, it is due to carbon particles in it. This is when one should check for stickiness (if sludgy or lumpy when drained - change immediately) and burning smell. If the oil is smooth when felt between the fingers its OK for some more time. If there is a gummy sensation then its time to change.

            • Hey Guys,
After a wait for 2 months i've cancelled my Silver Sword CBR and instead opted for the new Tricolor CBR which is due to launch next month. Officially there is no word on the date but news have it that it is expected to hit showrooms in Feb. So Fingers crossed and hoping to get in the First Lot.

It often takes a humiliating overtake to understand that an early jump off the red light won't help them lead the pact. All I want to say is - Go after green.

Thats wise at the moment On 'Bike Advice', in Auto Expo report, I had read in the new colour scheme CBR does not look as muscular as in current Red and Silver. But seeing first hand is the best.

ya, i ment viscous to be exact... the moment the it becomes less viscous its ability to work as an engine oil decreases

heres a site that might be infomative on this http://hyperformancecycles.net/oil_bible.pdf
