And coming to sound. Dude!!! It got hundreds of moving parts and you expect it to be silent? Stop worrying about these small sqeaks and enjoy the ride. Unless its too loud and its destroying your fun, you are good to go
well, i go out for a revving ride once every 4-5 days on an average, so i am not really revving it all the time...the other days, i just ride it like 1-2 kms per day, because my workplace and apartment are just 450 m from each other (yeah i know i have no practical need of any bike at all, i bought this just for fun and pleasure)...and those 1-2 kms are just peaceful slow non-revvy rides of course.

and i said about the slight squeaking sound because it didnt happen before today..and as i said, it's not while riding, just while maneuvering the bike from here and there using legs on the ground...it's probably just because the pads need a cleaning up or something..nothing major of course.

there's so much confusion and a lack of any majority opinion/experience regarding this topic, isn't it ? i am saying this because a lot of people (here in this thread, other places in the net, etc) say as long as it's a good and regularly busy bunk (which typically is believed to imply they store their petrol well and dont adulterate or something) and as long as one doesnt keep randomly changing the petrol company, it doesn't matter which particular company (indian oil, bp, hp, shell) one uses..but there's also a lot of people who would say one of these companies' petrol is more favourable than the others...i guess i should start experimenting with bp and hp the next time my tank's almost empty..experimentation was due at some point anyway.

It makes a difference and this you will observe my experience. As mentioned before Indian Oil has lowest level of octane content and thus the quality of combustion is lesser as compared to other oil brands.
Shell and BP has the highest content.
And most important dont be confused and with a mindset that IO is easily accessible so its gd and commonly used, remember its easily accessible and easily adulterated.

            +1
Shell is the best available in India
If shell is not available next best one is BP
I have been using BP and only BP since 2007
Now using Shell and only shell, when shell is not possible i go for BP
One more thing, brand alone can't guarantee the quality, petrol bunks are owned by individuals so the service quality varies.
See who else is filling from there, ask you mechanic also, you need to do little research before making final decision.

            • Petrol pimp.. :P

Shell>>BharatPetroleum>>IndianOil. HP, Reliance, Essar, etc are all outta question.

              Shell Super 91 - 52.5kmpl (Constant 5k rpm)
Shell Normal 91 - 43.5kmpl (Redlining, sedate riding, abrupt acceleration, highway and cratered city streets. Been there, done em all.)
Bharat Petroleum Speed 91 - 47kmpl (Sedate riding. Maxed out at 7k rpm a few times.)
Bharat Petroleum Normal 91 - 42kmpl (Raced through the NH8 all day long.)

Indian Oil : Heard bad reviews. Dint bother.

The guys at Shell I usually tank up at, located 10km away, know me pretty well.
              They know this customer wants
*A confirmation of how much amount of fuel is demanded. Thrice.
*The staff to hold the nozzle an inch inside the tank and not completely in.
*Hold the nozzle and not touch the lever untill I am convinced the last drop of petrol has been poured in.
*A computer printed receipt and the feedback book.
              *Everytime.

I once went to a BP bunk to tank up a friend's 5 minutes old Pulsar. Realised the guy filled 50 bucks worth of reading and said sorry and reached to the meter to reset it. I jumped up caught his collar, pulled him to the manager's cabin. Big melodrama of me threatrning to shut the damn bunk. (Lol). The manager slapped the staff and gave us free petrol. And requested me to not complain to his higher authorities (who I'd named during the melodrama.) Those 5 minutes were when time stood still for all those 20 odd bikes and cars waiting for a fill at the bunk. Lol..
Then on, everytime I ride into the bunk, I walk into the manager's. He greets and escorts me to the nozzle and insists I fill up without waiting in queue. The big show off of modesty I am, I inturn insist I wait for my turn and that he wait besides me. :P Fellow always asures me the quantity and quality both are perfect. Hahaa....

no shell bunks around here obviously, not even one in this part (northern) of india lol...according to the list of their petrol stations in india in their website, it appears almost all of them are confined to western and southern indian major cities...not even in delhi area, wtf ?

BP in my R15 from now on then i suppose...hopefully will find a seemingly busy and preferred BP bunk around my place..

Here we go again... someone was remarking how this thread is becoming dull and dead.... its just that most of the topics have already been discussed and re-discusssed and re-discussed to death and then someone will come along and beat the dead horse again and again expecting something new. Its no wonder that most valuable senior members like @satyenpoojary, etc, just left.

The issue of fuel bunkers and fuel quality must have been discussed number of times, but instead of reading those post first, things are being rehashed again and again. Here are some facts about fuel bunkers and the so called superior quality of fuel of one brand vis-a-vis others:

                  1. Shell does not have a refinery and cracking unit of its own in India. Therefore, it buys its fuel from other oil companies which have refineries and cracking units and simply markets these fuels under its brand.

                  2. Someone mentioned that Indian Oil fuel is not good and has a lower RON and BP fuel is good and has a higher RON. Not exactly true. Here is another fact: Most oil companies buy fuel from one another due reasons of economics and logistics. For example, the refinery at Mumbai is owned and operated by Bharat Petroleum and since it is located in Mumbai, it makes economical and logistical sense for all the other oil companies to buy their fuel from the Bharat Petroleum and supply it to all their fuel bunkers within Mumbai and surrounding areas. The same is applicable to all the parts of India. Oil companies source their fuel from the nearest refinery (whoever may own it) around the area. The exception to this was Reliance Refinery, which did come out with its genuine brand of fuel and RON when it was launched. So most fuel is of the same RON irrespective of it being sourced from Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, Shell, Hindustan Petroleum, etc.

                  3. The main thing in this is how fresh and good the stock is. According to my neighbor who works as a chemical engineer in Bharat Petroleum, you should always fill fuel from bunker that sell high volumes. The reason is simple, since the bunker sells high volumes, it replenishes its stock more frequently with fresh fuel. Also since the stock is fast moving, there is not enough time to adulterate the fuel by mixing any number of other solvents as it takes time to mix such solvents.

An example of point 3 is the fuel bunker in the next street to my residence. It is a Bharat Petroleum bunker which is one of its highest selling bunker in the country. The bunker gets 2 tanker loads of fuel (i.e. 24,000 liters) every day!!! Since it is such a high volume bunker, it gets its fuel directly from the BP refinery, hence the chances of adulteration are extremely low.

To sum up all of the above; the bottom line is that buy any brand of fuel, but ensure it is fresh and unadulterated. Octane rating is the same across the board unless it is specifically mentioned.

as i said, there's a lot of varying opinions/experiences regarding this petrol thing..in the present posts, in the earlier posts in this thread whenever this topic has arisen and elsewhere in the internet..

however, according to these spec sheets i have got from the websites of iocl and bp (hp and shell don't seem to provide spec sheets of their fuels in their websites), almost everything between them is identical..RON, MON, density at temp. T, recovery at T, lead content, benzene content, sulphur content etc etc...

note 1 - the BS stands for bharat stage and is some acronym for emission standards set by the indian govt. (based on the european standards euro II,III,IV).. BSII fuels are no longer sold and used for many years..it's BSIII nationwide since april 2010 except for 13 cities (of which mine isn't one but most of your cities are) where BSIV is being sold - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bharat_Stage_emission_standards . I have given links for BSII as well just because, well, the companies are still displaying its spec sheet in the websites.

note 2 - the above BP spec sheets are of fuels from their mumbai refinery (they have 4 in india)..my city probably gets it from their bina refinery in MP since allahabad is closer to bina than the other 3 refineries of BP..the bina refinery's spec sheets are also of course identical to mumbai's (explicitly verified)..presumably the other 2 refineries (kochi and assam) have the identical specs.

of course, there's the assumption that these companies follow their spec sheets truly, and the bunkers dont end up doing shit with them..

so i guess this sort of backs -
1 - what i used to think (and said previously) that what petrol company one fuels from doesn't matter as long as the petrol bunk is a busy one, which one believes implies it's hopefully also a credible one that doesn't screw with the fuel..
                            2 - whatever abhimanyu31 said.

in any case, there's no harm in experimenting a little bit, so i am anyway going to go ahead and try out BP once my present tank is nearly empty.

also, probably a stupid question but must ask - is xtra premium petrol recommended or harmful (or not) for R15 ? i have also read posts in xbhp and elsewhere saying it's recommended only for cars and superbikes and so on, but not for normal indian bikes or even (low displacement) performance bikes like R15, duke 200, cbr 250r/150r etc...but then again, some people use xtra premium petrol in their bikes without any problems... so far i haven't used xtra premium..
