  • New Suzuki GS150 R

    Hi Friends,

I have bought an GS 150 R six months back, after an month i felt like gear was very tight. then i have contacted the showroom they have adjusted, repeatedly i face the same problem , one fine day i went to the showroom asked for an replacement of bike, so they have agreed and change the whole clutch assembly. so some improvement is ther now, but still i dont feel very comfortable in changing gears somehow i am managing its not up to the satisfaction, also some noise is coming from disc always if i go to the showrroom they will clean after few days it will be the same. i was verymuch worried spent around 75000 , didnt get any satisfaction.

Showroom mechanic responses like it is the same for the most of the new bikes. i need an expert advice to decide whether to continue with this, or sell and buy some other one.

earlier i had an fiero so i was fond of suzuki and ended up in this trouble. if i have to replace this , which bike should i go for?

    very much confused.
    please add your valuable advice
    thanks in advance

Advice is a form of nostalgia.
Dispensing it is a way of fishing the past from the disposal, wiping it off, painting over the ugly parts and recycling it for more than it's worth.

The rear suspension is adjustable. Please refer the manual. It has a special adjuster tool in the tool kit provided with the bike. You can try softening the suspension. Make sure you keep the same setting on both the left and right sides.

          • ^^That is meant for cars. Shell has bike specific oils which will be a better choice. A car oil in a bike may cause clutch slippage in the long run.

Yes as Gansan mentioned, it's meant for cars. Personally Shell AX7 provided good results for me.

              • This hard gear shifting is a well known problem in GS which is discussed in the GS thread here. For some, it is fixed by using a better engine oil. For some (like me) the service center guys adjusted the clutch as they said and it was solved. Where are you from? Based on that we can see if there is a service center which will fix this.

@Request to mods: I think this thread can be merged with the GS thread if you think its appropriate to do so.

                • You're frustrated that's why you're not talking rational.

GS150 R is one of the least trouble bikes out there. Why sell it? Say if you bought an FZ and you faced too many punctures due to the wide rear tire, you'd replace the tire or the whole bike?

Now, please read through the ownership thread and use google to search through forums.
                  [example = gs150r + hard shifts + xbhp]

Please change the engine oil to a different grade and see. Lube (oil) the clutch assembly/gear lever from outside.

And most importantly, welcome to XBHP!!!

Feeling a lot better after I got the bike back today. The mechanic told me just the clutch adjustments were wrong and he had to adjust it correctly. Earlier the gearbox used to sound like it had a couple of nuts and bolts thrown in, but now it's almost like the test ride vehicles although a little too notchy for my liking. But it's an improvement never the less and I have decided to keep it and see how long it is before I had to bother someone else about this problem.
Vikhyath, missed your post.. Actually I was working on the same thing.,. Tried two different settings (angle) of clutch adjustment (the part which holds the end of the clutch cable).. I call it as Clutch arm.. Earlier in the 1st setup, I set the clutch arm degree somewhat rearwards to the original position.. Then rode for some 300kms, there was no improvement in shifting..The clutch tension too got increased.. In the 2nd setting, I set the clutcharm degree somewhat forward to the original position., Now the arm looks almost straight (perpendicular)..Now the clutch tension is much minimal than the original one., More over the important thing, shifting is now much much better., Both up & down shifts are effortless., Initially when this setup was done some 3days back, after riding for an hour gear shifting starts to get little harder, but not miserable.,Realised that oil was used for around 3000kms.. So,today changed the oil and rode around 100kms non-stop, and the gear shifting were great...I should say awesome here... Btw,I'm using just a 20w-40 mineral oil.. I need a weeks time to confirm the setup is going well..

Set your clutch cable yourself or get it set from local mechanic , use all 6 gears wisely (drive in all gears for sufficient distances),oil is crucial so change it at regular intervals with correct grade, oil shows its age with stiff gear changes , check authentic oils.
How much kms have you clocked , by the way GS gear box is one of the smoothest in the industry , you will have same issue with other brands /makes if you tend to practice unique style of riding .
                        Take care enjoy the ride

The gear shifting of my LML Supremo scooter which I have used for more than 30K kms and Suzuki Fiero which I still use and many other bikes likes Apache, Pulsar, Discover, CBR 150R, CBR 250R etc which I have ridden for few kms is not as smooth as rotating the speed regulator of a fan or cutting cheese with a hot knife.
If somebody finds out a bike offers silent, smooth gear shifting, i.e. allows gear shifting at any RPM without releasing the throttle, please let me too know about it as I too am ready to replace my GS.
Now, just release the throttle, disengage the clutch fully and press the gear lever with moderate force to shift gear smoothly. This is a problem of coordination of throttle and gear lever which can be attained by practice.
If not convinced, try to shift gear while the throttle is not released. Even ‘King Kong’ standing on the gear lever cannot do it, as, while the bike is accelerated, the gear lever acts as if it is locked.
Another alternative is clutch less shifting as I do. Press the gear lever slightly and release the throttle or do it vice versa. The gear shifts smoothly and silently but be sure that the down shifting is at proper slow speed. When becomes experienced, you can return to the conventional way.
One batch of the clutch bearing of the new GSs are a little faulty and replacing it may perhaps be helpful. If doing it, ask the mechanic to drill a few holes on the clutch sleeve hub too to increase the oil flow to the clutch plates.
However, the ultimate solution is practicing to shift at the proper time and RPM. Adjusting the clutch directly or by adjusting the position of the lever to which the cable is attached has nothing much to help in this case.
Replacing the exhaust affects the performance and FE of the bike, most probably, adversely. Some may give a placebo effect of increased power by altering the sound as K&N or other useless aftermarket air filters do. Better think thrice before replacing it.
Base oil used in all the engine oils is one and the same. The additives added too are same but the ratio may be slightly, but rarely, different. Most of the engine oil manufacturers are purchasing these additive packages from the same company manufacturing it. So, do not expect much difference in the performance of the oils if the viscosity and type is the same. The difference we feel is a hallucination in our head; not in the actual performance of the bike.
The engine oil expert gurus kindly pardon me. The additives in the engine oil meant for diesel engines are different and cause clutch slippage and hence not good for motorcycles.
As I always say, everybody has the fundamental right to do whatever he likes on his own bike or life but advising others to follow them is different and in simple words is a crime.
