as far as the rusting issue is concerned my few friends own gs and they havent faced any such issues

it all the way to 7K rpm until i told him to stop...He then told me to check it out and drive it...the odo was at 8.5 kms then.
, realised no batt atached, 1st kick started and nway ( since the other black looked used with no covering) took it...
Guess thats how all SC behave...( have seen new FZs doing imaginery drags by their SC guys )...
Just want to say something about this GS forum...
rust is a BIG ISSUE (4 me headlights) , but apart from that all the other probs. are inherent in ANY geared bike/car...
clanks(plenty), very low mileage, tyre punctures (common), 2-1 false neutral. so also upshifts, SONIC BOOM sounds when climbing or morn. starts, exposed chains making huge racket at 80+ when dirty, any accident = twisted handlebar, the display is not bright, no kick-start & no leg guard, yep even they have a paint peel out problem...
from 60- 75)...i will never call it bad , after 9 yrs its my bike and still am proud
of what all it has done...Lemme say within a year all these probs. will seem silly
and what u finally need is reliability and comfort ( GS has plenty of these)

...i am gear newbie and dont like flatout drag...just love silent cruising from behind 
)...At green, decided to try out a runnin-in
drag...gave a strong acc. and each blinking (~ 5K RPM now) changed gears
...seemed like 60...rock solid and smooth) felt
(i hate drags because its so stupid)...he came up behind me and indicated me to stop...Me hes gonna terminate me 
on highway...
...He loves rtr for drag with others...but personally considers it just an OK tiring bike...he also wants it to cruise comfortably like GS

..going for DADDY COOL today...
, just in case...still have no use for it and hopefully its not gonna be needed ever 
and not seek complete replacement of his GS.
consistently (R 2 R) after having driven at jams and highways (<65)...The bike engine feels more free reving (u gt it) and lower gears are smooth & definite...higher is gr8 
to skid under hard disc braking...feel its the GS wt and dynamics thats preventing bike 4m losing any stability under such braking 
rpm when choosing modes...Since tacho is analog so how does it stop...wonder is there a correlation on engine functioning and modes( yep yep i do remember the TPS debate 

) or there is plenty of A/D and D/A convertors on this bike
