  • ^ why is it nessescary to replace the O-ring every time?. My friend recently changed the oil filter on his FZ and his svc did not change the o-ring seal.

@akfara: Ask the svc what oil he uses. Ask him to shut up while you put a call to another suzuki SVC and ask them what oil they use. if things need to be fixed, call me. Ill act :P

I have no objections moreover while posting the comment(s) I made sure of not mentioning the dealer name or location as its not one particular dealers mistake, as suzuki failed to recommend one or more good oil brand for its products

      @abhi_gsr
I am not sure as I never did and yet to get opportunity to replace the oil filter
Please check the oil filter package more over "0" ring doesn't costs much

Best of luck once done, do provide us your inputs on oil filter replacing procedure

      • Guys, today I met a fellow GS owner, I asked about the bike he said its the best he had ever used. He previously owned HeroHonda Splendor, Passion, Pulsar 150 classic and now a happy GS owner. He had done 11k on ODO in his 1 year ownership experience. I asked him are you still using oil from the service centre. He calmly said due to business he could only do first service after that he hasn't done any service or oil change. I couldnt believe what I was hearing. Seeing my face he said Suzuki engine is that much good.

To which I calmly replied bro, Im using a GS for half a year now and have done 6600 kms on it and have done 3 services and 3 oil changes. Then I asked his permission to drive his bike,
        1. Due to rain self switch not working, but engine started in single kick
        2. Brake shoes have completely worn out and the brake pedal can be used as another foot peg.
        3. On 3.5K rpm there was a rattling noise like dragging some metal, think engine nuts are loose
        4. Gave misshifts all the time
        5. Clutch was lifeless
        6. Even after so engine was running smoothly

Guys what do you say?Do we need any testimony about the robustness of Suzuki engine? Stop worrying about engine and oil ? I took my time to make him understand what all things to do. He has agreed get bike serviced tomorrow itself.

          @
Guess i might have to replace it this time. Coz i dont think it has been replaced on my Bike for many Months now.
Today i gave my Bike for 8th Free Service. Before this Oil was replaced on the 6th Paid Service but Oil Filter and O Ring were not changed by the SC. Before that, i missed 3 Servicings and my Bike was left unserviced for about 5 Months.

Hey buddy doesnt warranty get cancelled if we miss any service according to the date ??
If it doesnt get cancelled then even i'm going to give the bike only for alternate services coz i spend 300 bucks every service and i ride only 500-800kms between services generally, so giving everytime is a waste..

Regarding the engine oil thing, try airport road suzuki if you are in bangalore. to me they agreed to put even different grade engine oil like 10w40 and 5w40 and the only thing they said is to get it changed from them and not outside..
They charge 20 bucks for changing, guess its better to go to SC than local mechs (oil change is definitely not a DIY thing), used oil is hazardous so SC's would dispose of it in a proper manner and getting our hands dirty with oil can cause cancer(as stated in the manual somewhere)..

Or you can try shell bunks for oil change incase you're buying shell oil. last time when i bought shell advance(mineral) they had asked if they could change the oil for free , but i said no thanks as i was buying it before time...

Oil change is much simpler than tuning carburetor. The materials you need are a 16-17 Box spanner, a pair of gloves(if any) and an old mug. If the spanner dont have leverage it will be very difficult to loosen the drain plug. Warm the engine and then open the drain plug, place the mug. In 10 min almost 95% of oil will be there in the mug.Wear gloves to prevent Cancer, the local mechanic whom I consult would have been long dead . But as you said disposal can be an issue and some even suggests to use this engine oil to lubricate chain.

              • Hi...been quite a long while

Hello all, its been a long-long time since I visited this forum and got involved in the discussions. Sorry about that, had been held up with work & the all troubles of Life...

Been going though the so-many thread for a while now and am happy to know so many new members have joined the GS-150r gang. Welcome to all. Its a great commuter bike, you will love every bit of it.

Ok coming back to my ride, I have completed around 12k kms on my GS and today its 13months old. I have not done any mods or changes in anything till date, so the initial issues still persist.

I am planning to go on a 3-day tour to Mysore-Coorg next month so wanted to rectify whatever I could. Many of my questions might have been discussed in the previous posts but I hope no one minds me asking them again.

                - Have seen a lot of discussions going on around the engine Oil department here. I have been using Castrol all this while changing every 2k kms. Should I consider opting something else?
Engine does go a little rough after the initial 1000kms...

                - The headlight has always been an issue. Has Suzuki found a solution for that which I can implement on my GS? Or should I opt for a change of bulb, in that case which one?
Guess people are talking about Osram Silverstar 55/60W. If that's the answer, any idea where I can get it in Bnglr and for how much.

                - Bike cries when going uphill. Any suggestions?

                - Any improvement on brakes? Had made the SC guys tighten it once but that made the back tyre make noises.

                - I have felt a certain pull on the rear tire when turning on high speeds. A pull that make one feel that the bike will loose balance get thrown to the other side. I believed its normal, what do you guys say?

                - My mileage comes between 43-48km/lt. Can this be improved. Many GS users here I guess get 50+. Mileage has always been an issue with my bike. Initially when I got my new bike it was as bad as 31km/lt. After several tuning the current mileage has been achieved.

Apart from the above, anything else/advice that i should keep in mind for my long trip is welcome..

One last thing...since I have a pillion rider as well, is there any way I can hang the luggage (say 2 bags) around the bike making sure the pillion rider is comfortable along & the ride is safe.

Thanks for the advice......i used to take it in front but had some other stuff too so it was sliding off my shoulders...so took it backside.......neways...m HAPPY that my lappy and I am safe and even GS can cross 125kmph.....

                  HAHAAHAAAA nice one.....

And once you realized what they were doing and turned back, i dont think they would have tried to take your bag again..
So going 125kmph wouldnt have been necessary, riding fast after such situations seems dangerous coz you might have been tensed.
Thank u........he was kinda waiting for me to come ahead again, they were well built and TWO in numbers and i am kinda average and was single........so was scared..........and hence i did that......

what more could have had the thugs done with an Unicorn ????......they thought GSR was all that was quoted in the magazines.
A new Pulsar180 with pillion on board finds it difficult to keep up with me riding the GSR solo leave alone Unicorn and Dazzlers

GS150R will always give back the love to its owner when needed.

P.S. prevention is always better than cure......avoid such circumstances always.Always be on watch for vehicles which passes you and slows down. Its better to race away before they strike out at you or maintain a safe distance from them,so that you can escape if things go wrong. As in this case,Later on as you hurry with worry in your mind any disaster may come to pass in seconds.God keep us safe.
Rightly said he will neverr try doing this to any GS owner next time though.....and thanks a lot......i was just asking mah beauty cum beast to move faster and faster which she promptly did and saved me......

Engine does go a little rough after the initial 1000kms...

                  Try Gulf mentioned above.

                  - The headlight has always been an issue. Has Suzuki found a solution for that which I can implement on my GS? Or should I opt for a change of bulb, in that case which one?

Regarding headlight ask the svc guy to change the RR unit.....the beam improves....otherwise you can opt for a osram 35/35w bulb......for silverstar you will have to shed your pilot lights.......(even then you can't power the silverstar to its full intensity)and if you insist on putting silverstar then why not opt for nightbreaker....
you can even contact animeher...that guy has done some serious changes to his headlamp assy.....
                  - Bike cries when going uphill. Any suggestions?
Try proper downshifting and upshifting......it'll be fine ...this is atleasst what I do!

                  - Any improvement on brakes? Had made the SC guys tighten it once but that made the back tyre make noises.
                  Can't say anything for this......

                  - I have felt a certain pull on the rear tire when turning on high speeds. A pull that make one feel that the bike will loose balance get thrown to the other side. I believed its normal, what do you guys say?
Your bike's tyre pressure is low........I optimise tyre's pressure everytime......never felt what you said till now in my 3.5k+journey...
                  - My mileage comes between 43-48km/lt. Can this be improved. Many GS users here I guess get 50+. Mileage has always been an issue with my bike. Initially when I got my new bike it was as bad as 31km/lt. After several tuning the current mileage has been achieved.
You can try opting for constant speeds......preferably 45-60kmph
other option is you must use speed shifting technique.......and smoothly accelerate and decelerrate.....never sprint unless necessary.....check tyre's pressure.....these are all the basics for getting good mileage.....recently i started following these and getting a 57kmpl mileage against a 40kmpl mileage before.....(Haven't done any tuning yet)

Apart from the above, anything else/advice that i should keep in mind for my long trip is welcome..
1>Wear necessary gears, like proper jacket, knee guards, elbow guards boots and the most important full face helmet.....
2>carry all the documents in original as well as xerox and keep them at separate places.....
3>carry a spare clutch cable, break cable...n stuff......it comes handy.....also keep a small first aid kit or check if the one provided hasn't expired...
4>keep important phone numbers, and keep adequate fuel in fuel tank....
5>As its just a 120km ride so our GS can handle it beautifully......but still take break every hour for 5-10 mins.....just to avoid fatigue.....(this is only if you have no experience driving for long distances at a stretch)otherwiseyou can opt for break every two hours.....
One last thing...since I have a pillion rider as well, is there any way I can hang the luggage (say 2 bags) around the bike making sure the pillion rider is comfortable along & the ride is safe.
you can use saddle bags and tank bag...u both will be comfortable.......try carrying less stuff though......
Gave answers in bold........phew i am so lazy still wrote so much......anything else.......then i request other members to post it.....i am kinda tired.....

                  • lot of talks about O rings and stuff So i decided i will stick with Castrol for time being will Try to convince the SVC to put in Gulf Pride 4T Plus. But really need some clarification if 900ML is Enough or Need to put in 1100 ML or 1000 Ml since this will require me to get 2 bottles of gulf. And anybody can tell the price.

                    • Thanks Maestro.

                      - Will try Gulf. Maybe I will switch to that before the trip as I gt my oil changed just today. Is that ok?

                      - Read about the RR unit in one of the posts. Will I be charged for that change? If yes, how much. Also, how improved is the beam with this change? I am not looking at getting rid of pilot lights. Maybe Animeher can shed more light on the best option.

                      - Even I thought the rear-pull thing could be a low-pressure issue but have tested that. Seems something else.

                      - For mileage I generally drive in eco mode well within the range. But will try out the tips you mentioned. May do wonders.

Thanks a lot all other tips as well.. Will prove quite helpful..

@Others - Add more if you can...

                      • Saddle bags...

Regarding Saddle bags. Did some research and came to know that everyone swears by cramster. It costs around Rs.2100

Since I have budget crunch and I need this. Is it possible to get a saddle bag on rent? Or if any Bangalore GS owners here have it & do not mind lending it to me for 3days?

Also, how comfortable Saddle bags are for on a pillion rider on a GS.

Edit: I have another 1k kms to go before my 2nd service so should i currently stick with Castrol or move to Gulf Pride. Why do you want to change oil filter? Even I havent changed oil filter after first service. Are you planning to change as you are going to use an oil other than S.C oil? The Gulf is purely a mineral oil and its a waste to change oil filter as you need to ride that much to reach Service centre. If you keep on riding like this rate by the 4th oil change you can change oil filter.

Why are you still trying to contact Suzuki? Is there any complaint about service quality?

Its good practice to change th oil every 100 Kms if you are running Mineral. Shift to Semi synthetic if you are keen on running it for 2000 Kms. Gulf and Shell helix are some of the trusted ones.

                                - The headlight has always been an issue. Has Suzuki found a solution for that which I can implement on my GS? Or should I opt for a change of bulb, in that case which one?

There are 3 things you can do based on budget:
                                1. Remove Pilots and Number plate light. This saves 15 watts, Install the 55/60 bulb. Im not sure of the cost but this might be the cheapest way to get around the lighting issue in a legal way.

                                2. Rewind the Lighting coil alone and install 55/60. This can be done only when there are good auto electricians around. The cost should be less than 500-600 bucks max. This voids electrical waranty, but screw that man. The Harness and the battery are the only ones covered here. Since the Bulb is running on AC, the battery is safe, provided you didnt touch the Battery charging coil and the RR unit.

                                3. Install HIDs. The HID bulb costs 1400. get the 4k version for white beam. DO a DC conversion and runn the bulb via battery. PM me for detailed info. Switch to high when u see cops. the HD causes glare which is against the law.

                                - Bike cries when going uphill. Any suggestions?

                                Carb tuning is needed.

                                - Any improvement on brakes? Had made the SC guys tighten it once but that made the back tyre make noises.

The stock back break is used to slowing down. not for a sudden halt. use both brakes to stop or use gear braking for coming to a complete halt. I've found the stock braking setup perfect for stoppingg from 90 to zero on the highways without any glitches. It all depends on how you break. avoid panic breaking.

                                - I have felt a certain pull on the rear tire when turning on high speeds. A pull that make one feel that the bike will loose balance get thrown to the other side. I believed its normal, what do you guys say?

Havent Experienced. Park your bike on center stand and switch on engine and switch to first gear. GO back and check if there are alloy bends. If not check for Swing arm bend.

                                - My mileage comes between 43-48km/lt. Can this be improved. Many GS users here I guess get 50+. Mileage has always been an issue with my bike. Initially when I got my new bike it was as bad as 31km/lt. After several tuning the current mileage has been achieved.

Mileage has been constant 50 from 2nd service. Got 60 Once, but bike felt sluggish. Get a decent mech to tune your carb. Mine gives 50 with decent pickup.

Apart from the above, anything else/advice that i should keep in mind for my long trip is welcome..

1.Wear thy riding gear. make sure your pillion does too. A helmet, a basic windcheater/denim jacket, jeans, shoes and gloves are the bare minimum.

                                2. Carry your Original papers if touring in another state.

                                3. Carry a Spare clutch wire, A spare accelarator wire, No need for both the cables. Cable A should do.

4.Also try to shove in a extra tube in case of punctures. I know a friend who was tuck in a Puncture shop in a village hich had only TVS 50 Tubes. The Puncture wala rode down to the nearest town to get a used Pulsie tube and by the time he got back on the road, he had lost 3 Hours of daytime.

5.A tip given to me by a fellow tourer. In case a dog challenges your braking/ manuevering skills, put your shoes on the tarmac and drag it, the noise is enough to scare the dog. For a cow or a cattle, try to pass it from the back.

                                6. Change your visor if you are prone to driving in the dark. Scratches refract the light and Reduce visibility. Carry tissues and some tap water to clean your visor of dead bugs and insects.

                                7. Keep checking the RVM for mad cagers and truck walas. Dont honk too much. use indicators when switching lanes.

                                8. If you see lots of skid marks, slow down, there might be a hazard (speed breaker or pot hole) hiding somewhere.

                                9. When Overtaking a Sationary Vehicle, slow down and Honk liberally. There are many fools who prefer to cross the road from the front of the bus. This creates a blind spot for them and for us.

                                10. Watch out for Travel cabbies, who drive recklessly. It should be easy to spot them by the number plates and stoopid stickering. Avoid Them. Same rule applies to Villagers on Moped, M80's and other Load carrier vehicles. They seldom use RVM's, Turn Lights or hand signals to indicate thier intentions.

                                11. Use signals liberally. These include Hand signals,Turn Indicators, Pass beam and horn.

                                12. Give some buffer space while overtaking a vehicle, Odds are he might have not seen you and he is probably planning to speed up. The proper procedure is to first look at the RVM for traffic behind you, switch on your right indicators and look at the RVMs again.
if the coast is clear, Overtake him on the right, switch on your left indicators and travel a good amount of distance before you cut back into your original lane. this gives time for him to react to your move.

                                13. Dont tailgate cars or trucks, they might have the ability to stop on a dime. We dont have that luxury.

There is no substitute for common sense man, use it liberally. Drive safe !

One last thing...since I have a pillion rider as well, is there any way I can hang the luggage (say 2 bags) around the bike making sure the pillion rider is comfortable along & the ride is safe.

Look for a tank bag. Make sure you use a soft cloth below the tank bag to avoid scratches. Ask your pillion to wear a back pack which is light . Remember Light Luggage = Comfortable Ride.
