Guess people are talking about Osram Silverstar 55/60W. If that's the answer, any idea where I can get it in Bnglr and for how much.

    Two optoins:
    1. HID: You can fit an HID for about Rs.2000
    2. Cheaper optoin: Disconnect the pliot lamps/connect them directly to battery. This will give additional 10W useable power. Now change the bulb to Rs180 Osram Silverstar 55/60. Good cheap mod.

    - Bike cries when going uphill. Any suggestions?

Most probably you are using wrong gear. Always downshift BEFORE the uphill starts, not when the bike forces you to downshift. Always maintain the bike around 4k rpm in uphill, irrespective of the gear.

    - Any improvement on brakes? Had made the SC guys tighten it once but that made the back tyre make noises.

Ask the SC to change thre rear break spring to new model.

    - I have felt a certain pull on the rear tire when turning on high speeds. A pull that make one feel that the bike will loose balance get thrown to the other side. I believed its normal, what do you guys say?

As someone said above, may be your tire air pressure is less.

    - My mileage comes between 43-48km/lt. Can this be improved. Many GS users here I guess get 50+. Mileage has always been an issue with my bike. Initially when I got my new bike it was as bad as 31km/lt. After several tuning the current mileage has been achieved.

    Change the gears like this:
    1st gear-from pickup to 5-10KMPH
    2nd- upto 29
    3rd - 30 - 39
    4th - 40 -48
    5th - 49 - 53
    6th - 54 and above

5th gear is really short, and useful in cities only, where you need to maintain good speed without over-running. In any gear, above 4.5k rpm, bike starts to really run, so for mileage always keep the rpm between 4-4.5k rpm. This will definitely increase the mileage. Forget to keep the bike in highest gear possible, its not good for mileage. Keep it in top torque gear, so at 4-4.5 rpm.

Apart from the above, anything else/advice that i should keep in mind for my long trip is welcome..

    1. Helmet/jacket/knee guard compulsory for both rider and pillion. You can get the skating knee guards that cost only 100-200. I prefer to wear a clear wisor, because this extends the usability in the night as well.

    2. Both should get good pair of sunglasses, preferably polarized. This will greatly increase your enjoyment, as the colors look great from a sunglass!

    3. For luggage, you will need a tankbag. For 3 days, a tankbag is more than enough. If you need more space, get a big backpack, and tie it to the leg guard by bungee cords. Try to avoid any backpack on your/pillion's back, as it will pain you afterwards, no matter how light it is.

    4. If you pass through remote areas, keep a tire tube handy. If you can learn to replace tubes and have a foot pump, great, but even if you don't do this, atleast keep a spare tire tube costing around 150-200.

    5. Drink lots of water.

    6. Don't hurry to reach the place. The road is better than the inn! In most of my journies, I found that traveling with a good partner is much more enjoyable than reaching the place early.

    8. Keep a gunny bag with you. GS's rider seat is good, but pillion is likely to suffer paining. Keep the gunny bag folded on pillion's seat, and then use it as a seat. It greatly increases the comfort.

    9. Post a travelogue on xbhp!

One last thing...since I have a pillion rider as well, is there any way I can hang the luggage (say 2 bags) around the bike making sure the pillion rider is comfortable along & the ride is safe.

Hey onlyyourspiyu (what's with the username?!), I have answered few of the queries. If at all you are keen on getting a saddlebag, make sure you invest additional 150rs and do the following mod:

Thats a really good mod. Are custom made saddle bags cheaper? Also, any idea where I can get them made in Bangalore?

About the username...its is one of the names you choose without in reason during school/college days. And now I have used it in so many places that I stick with it. Mainly to avoid - "Username not available" issues... Not much of a reason but... Call me Piyush!

I guess you are talking about valve clearance or tappet adjustment.
The tool he has mentioned is the feeler gauge for measuring, which is like a small blade with marking on it, since precise clearance of 0.1 or 0.2mm should be maintained.
On the other hand, this is not done pretty often. Most of the times the clattering sound comes from the cam chain, which can be adjused pretty easily. The tappets also do become loose with constant riding, the higher the bike revvs, the more often it needs adjustment. For eg.in my R15 tappet adjustment is prescribed in the manual at every 6K kms.
Please check the manual for the GS, it will give you the adjustment interval, as well as clearance values. More aggressive riding style would demand more often inspection.

          • @ akfara: looks like your SVC is still in the stone ages man. All SVC's must carry the tools needed for the job. I doubt if you need tapet adjustment, Must be the cam chain as suggested by Sarvajit. It wont affect the mileage on the short run. you can feel the bike starting to respond in a sluggish way to your throttle. Its best to head to another SVC and get it fixed. On a long run, you can endup jamming the valve, happened on my old bike
Sit Down, Shut Up and Hang on ....

Thanks for U and felix for info.......
it's not clattering noise(may be i don't know how it is by sound),Even i had this tappet noise in my old Suzuki esteem(which is solved) and as well as in my old pulsar(which happen every 7k, as u told for Ur R15) as u told after certain interval like 6k to 8 k ,Its a Tic tic tic noise from engine , even in idle,My mech itself accepted its tappet noise , he need tool from SC MAIN(not from silencer as i know it is frm catalyst converter) U can heard the noise clearly from herohonda where valve or tappet not adjusted...
              @felix
Ya well said stone age ..... My Main SC is 140km from me pondy(towards north), as u suggest if i try another SVC ,i have to go towards
'Trichy(south) which is 160km.....which is not possible for me

If its the clicking noise from the engine, then its the cam chain no doubt. Should be simple to get that adjusted, a matter of minutes.

I guess he should know this atleast.
It can be done from the outside itself, no need to open anything up.
Last time my Fiero F2 had the same clicking noise&it disappeared as soon as the cam chain was adjusted. Though now its facing some other issues for which I'm planning to open up the head.

                          • My new bike has become soooo smooth now, that when I ride it in city around 2500-3400rpm,I dont feel that I am riding so powerful a thing!!!!!!

I wonder how it comfortably travels with that weight in start stop traffic in and around 2500-3400rpm range, its a bike with massive amount of character !!!!! Its so silent.
Just a twist of throttle is all it requires now climb the serious speeds in the city...............and that too without any stressing behaviour from the engine.
The Engine has turned smoother by the day,and it now travels like a very fast moving electric train!!!!!!All of a sudden I feel a gust of wind and see the far vehicles in front of me closing in very quickly !!!!

Is the bike that Cold Blooded ???? It murders without any hue and cry !!!!!

                            • @ mach50: dude, check out the sweet spot at 3k RPM in 3rd and 4th gear. No indications that the engine is switched on. I stick to this when riding inside the city on small roads during night time. Once a guy whom i had given a lift asked me if its some hybrid as his grandpas electric scooter behaves very similarly. i Didt answer him but he must have seen the console...Did you get my mail?

@akfara: Cheers mate we'll meet sometime later.

Going to Try Gulf Hopefully i can find 1ltr bottle.
