Yeah. You need to take a look at your spark plug. White deposit means lean. Dark sooty deposit means rich. But I am not sure. It's been a while since I messed around with my carb.

Yes. Keeping the tire pressure at the recommended pressure(as long as you are using the stock set up) will help. Recommended is 25psi and 32psi for pillion riding, and 25psi and 29psi for single riding.
Don't matter what it is: Touring; Racing; Commuting. All I know is, I belong on the saddle.

    Rides : Honda CB Twister(Feb 2011 - Present) | TVS Apache RTR 180 ABS(Sept 2012 - May 2016) | Honda CBR250R C-ABS Repsol(March 2017 - Present)

Hi, I need some info in the changes I'm about to make in my Apache( 2011 hyper edge 160, 32k kms, chennai) :

          1. The engine noise has changed to khach khach khach, instead of dud dud dud. Any idea what could be the reason and how to make it right? I don't think it needs rebore though.
          2. I'm thinking of changing the regular tvs oil with some high performance oil as I ride mostly on highways. Any suggestions? I've used shell oil once but didn't find it great.
          3. Any place where I can buy NGK iridium spark plug and k & n filter for Apache in Chennai
          4. I have to get the chain sprocket replaced for the third time. I'm thinking the adayar TVs guys are not doing a good job, any recommendation of a particular mechanic in Chennai who is good for Apache?
          5. There have been minor paint chip off s in wheel alloys, silencer and side. Can I buy spray paint for this or is there any procedure to apply paint?? And any idea which one to buy at hardware store?
          6. I'm thinking of getting the led small indicators as the stock ones keep breaking. Any idea where I can get it in Chennai?

Thanks in advance for the answers. Also is there any service centre guy in Chennai who can take care of all these problems?

I can't really be sure of this, but I think you might need to check your spark plug for signs of bad carb tuning.

            2. I'm thinking of changing the regular tvs oil with some high performance oil as I ride mostly on highways. Any suggestions? I've used shell oil once but didn't find it great.

This comes as a surprise! Have you tried the shell AX7 oil? It is great! Shell Ultra also is a great oil. If both don't satisfy you, try Motul 7100 FS oil. I would still say give Shell AX7 another go.

            3. Any place where I can buy NGK iridium spark plug and k & n filter for Apache in Chennai.

AFAIK, the NGK IR sparkplugs really just last longer. No real advantage. They also cost more. It's a solution to a non-problem. Please stay away from K&N filters. They are meant for track use. The amount of dust they will let into your engine will bring you more woes than you want to bargain for. If you absolutely have to, try Simota air filters. They are at least street friendly. They should be available online easily.

            4. I have to get the chain sprocket replaced for the third time. I'm thinking the adayar TVs guys are not doing a good job, any recommendation of a particular mechanic in Chennai who is good for Apache?

Three times in 30k km? :O That's preposterous! You can do chain maintenance at home yourself. Check YouTube for a user named Mandy newcity. He has detailed videos of RTR maintenance. You don't need much to clean and oil you chain, which I'd recommend you do every 15-20days. You will see the difference in ride quality instantaneously!

            5. There have been minor paint chip off s in wheel alloys, silencer and side. Can I buy spray paint for this or is there any procedure to apply paint?? And any idea which one to buy at hardware store?

I do not think it's as simple as spray paint. It is powder coated with black through anodizing the wheel. It can be done at a motorcycle detailing shop. If you scour the sub-forums you will find what you need to know.

            6. I'm thinking of getting the led small indicators as the stock ones keep breaking. Any idea where I can get it in Chennai?

Sorry can't comment on this. We do have a member by the name of Vishnu Leo I think. He had managed to use the Duke's LED indicators on his RTR. Should be a simple procedure.

Thanks in advance for the answers. Also is there any service center guy in Chennai who can take care of all these problems?
In answer to your last question - I don't think any TVS SVC is equipped to do much. They have state of the art equipment but are lazy bums. I don't really know how all of them are so similar! They know next to nothing and flat out refuse to do anything out of the books. Not even something as simple as an oil change! But I guess that's every Indian SVC for every Indian/International brand.

              Hi everyone..
I was riding on B'lore's superb rain eroded roads and noticed that my bike's front forks has become softish and damping has become uneven. My bike's fork tend to reach its limit of shock absorption entering into potholes and makes a thud sound, which was not the case a few years ago. While hard braking the front has uneven damping and the bike squats down very unevenly. There is nothing wrong with the brakes.
So, I figured out, its the fork oil. Ended up buying a Motul Heavy 20W fork oil (had no other choice of brand or grade).

Have a few queries: What is the recommended grade of fork oil? And what is the change interval of fork oil? Should any other part be replaced while changing the fork oil?

Buddy, changing the rpm of the bike on rides reduces the FE. Try to maintain a certain speed and avoid changing the rpm by giving throttle inputs . Keeping the rpm a constant, the bike will give its best FE. Maintain top gear and 6-7k rpm to get optimum speed and optimum FE. Yes, anything above this range the FE will suffer but you will achieve good average speeds.

I'v used AX7 and have done rides maintaining 100-105 @7k and have achieved 44kmpl. Its not the oil, its the grade of oil. Thicker oil will make the engine sluggish and reduce the FE.

There you go, two major reasons for sad FE. Keeping the air pressure a bit more(2-3psi more) is really beneficial. Rich AF mixture wastes a lot of fuel.

Hey guyz...My front stock TVS tires are due for change. Crossed 41k with them. Any idea regarding dual compound tires for front. By dual compound, I meant tires like Meteor, Sirac. I know these are rear tires.
I would like to know do we have any such for front tires with 90/90-17 spec.
I tried out Ceat, MRF & Michellin official websites.
Michellin website sucks big time. They dont have the option of selecting front tire or rear tire in find my tire section and always shows results of rear tires.
The MRF website shows some new models but they dont have size spec related information.
Ceat website were perfect and gave all the details even though I didnt find the kind of tire Im looking for.
If none are available then I will settle with MRF Zapper FS or FY. But FY size is 80/90-17 & is tubeless. Mine is RTR-160-H.Edge and it has tube type rims.

For tube type you'll get Ceat zoom, mrf zapper fs.
                  For tubeless you'll get Michelin pilot sporty,Ceat zoom,Birla tyre,Dunlop and mrf zapper fy1 90/80 r17 which is r15 v2 stock tyre.

If you want better crusing ability then go for RTR 160's rear sprocket (44 teeth) or change the front to 15 teeth sprocket(this will make the gearing very tall though)
Its better you go with RTR 160's rear sprocket
Buy the whole 160's chain set. The front sproket is separately available at svc.
I had once bought 180's front sproket separately from svc in kolkata.

Many factors affect FE but riding above 7k rpm for long will reduce mileage and also the engine might feel a bit stressed out after sometime when riding in this heat.

Ya bro, I'v increased the tyre size to 120/80. I usually maintain 28 psi in front and 35/36 psi at the rear. I have fitted a aftermarket air filter as well (no up-jet).
Never ever felt like experimenting with the sprockets.

RTR 160 has shorter gearing than 180.
I guess your friend has the old RTR 160
Those old 160 had 18" rim at rear and i guess gearing was a bit different too.
A cousin of mine has the 09 RTR 160, it also does 55 kmph at 4k rpm on 5th gear
Also have to say those old RTRs pulled like crazy that too in stock condition. It vibrated a lot but the power was completely different from today's RTR 160.
                              Love them old RTR 160s
