Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
Hey guys i am posting after a long time, last time i had poured in shell oil and after 3000 odd kms,
the engine konked and i had to replace the Bore and Pistons. After this incident i am paranoid and regularly check oil levels.
A few months back i poured in the same SHELL ADVANCE Semi Synthetic oil and i have clocked about 2400 kms,oil seems level and quality seems fine the last time i checked and even the Shell Petrol bunk Mech confirmed that a oil change is not required.
I am wondering why is this happenning? was it because it was an old bore(it had clocked about 20000 odd kms)? i am not able to figure this out.

20000 kms is too early for bore piston replacement buddy. Were you able to see smoke from exhaust at higher rpms?Originally posted by pranav_salieri View PostHey guys i am posting after a long time, last time i had poured in shell oil and after 3000 odd kms,

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
yeah i could see the smoke and also the bore had scratches inside and the piston was partially burnt. The SVC guy had claimed that there was no engine oil and i had clocked just 3000 kms after pouring n shell engine oil.I was shocked as this was the second time i had replaced the bore

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
Pranav do you rip the bike a lot ?? And fast, high rpm highway rides ?? The bore had scratches then the bike had run out of engine oil. You said smoke at highway speeds then the engine was consuming oil due the excessive strain the engine would have been under.Originally posted by pranav_salieri View Postyeah i could see the smoke and also the bore had scratches inside and the piston was partially burnt. Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
For some reason, my brother's bike had the same issue. Used synthetic engine oil and in around 500kms oil was below low level. Turned out the oil evaporated and engine was running low on oil. The same happened more than twice even on mineral oil. Now engine is rebored at 27k kms, since it was scratched, and running better than earlier but not good as stock. Till now no idea what's the issue and now it's running on mineral oil. There has been no issue so far though.Originally posted by pranav_salieri View Postyeah i could see the smoke and also the bore had scratches inside and the piston was partially burnt. Bro, 20k km is early but it depends on how the bike was ridden and maintained. I'v run my stock bore and piston for 30k km without replacement or trouble. (I had a engine oil leak from the engine head( at 22-24k km mark) But thanks to TVS SVC, I faced "white smoke issue"as idiots told me "engine ceased" and did repairs of engine head. Later, the leak as fixed).Originally posted by pranav_salieri View Postyeah i could see the smoke and also the bore had scratches inside and the piston was partially burnt. Only after 33-35k km I noticed drops in engine oil levels. The Mech warned me of slightly worn out piston rings and suggested me to replace them within 37-38k km. All the 38k km were done @6000-7000 rpm (well, at least 90% was) on highway.
At 39K km bike was ripped on the highway forgetting the oil consumption. This was the last thing to be done, now engine got ceased and piston, rings and bore are to be replaced.
One more example, my dads victor gl is 13years old and for the first 11years there was no issue with the engine at all. My dad rides in the city only but does 40-50km a day. So you can imagine the number of kms on stock bore and piston.
The lessons to be learnt, the hard way.
1. Piston rings eventually get worn out with kms(no matter which bike only the number of km vary) and engine starts burning oil. Change the rings asap.
2. Keep a check of engine oil levels.
3. Keep an eye on the condition of spark plug, they convey a lot of info.
Cheers.

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
Hello guys!!!
Am new to the RTR family and just bought 180 ABS a couple of months back (1650kms on the ODO). I have a couple of doubts...
1. There is a lot of vibration above 4.5k rpm and it seems to have increased recently. How do I reduce it? Any tips before i go for second servicing??
2. The bike dsnt go straight if u lift both hands of the handle bars. Is it with my bike only or all ABS models (the right side seems heavier coz of the ABS wires) have the same issue?
Thanks and cheers to all fellow Apache riders and xBhp-ians!

Firstly, welcome to the tribe!
I had vibrations from 4k to 5k rpm till about the third service. After that, whether they actually reduced, or I grew accustomed to them is still a mystery.
People here will tell you that RTRs and vibrations go hand in hand: and its true. You will learn to live with it after a while, if not love it.
That said, there are certain things you can do to reduce them:
- Tighten loose fasteners if any: bolts, screws etc. The trick here is to make sure the mechanic doesn't go overboard with this, and shows his super-human strength on the bolts.
- Use double-sided tape, or rubber patches in certain areas like the handle-bar joints, the windshield, the air-filter cover, the battery-cover, the part that has the RTR logo (below the console) etc. Your mechanics should know where these tricky points are. This will help reduce the vibrations to a great extent.
- Some people suggest rubber patches on the places where the engine makes contact with the frame. I haven't tried this personally, but if the above point doesn't work to your satisfaction, try this too.
- Use a good-quality engine oil. I have seen people recommend Shell and Motul. Make sure you pick the right grade.
The bike not going straight may be due to the forks not being tightened properly. If your tyres look like they have been running off-center, this is most likely the issue. I had the same problem: its no big deal. Just tell the mechanics about the issue, and ask them to take a look. Again, its important that they don't get over-zealous and tighten it too much that it sounds like an old cot every time you brake.
I have heard that using mineral oil for the initial few thousand kilometers is good for the engine. I can't verify the amount of truth to it, but this is something you can try; no harm done. Refuse if they ask whether you'd like to go for TRU4 synthetic. Get the oil filter changed too.
Also, make a note of the service instructions on the back of the free service coupon in the manual. This is the recommended procedure that the company expects the SVC to carry out. Make sure they do everything mentioned in it.
And once again, welcome! Ride hard. Ride safe.

Thanks a lot for all that help! I'll mention these tips to the SVC guy when I go for my 2nd servicing. But on that note, can you suggest a good service center in Bangalore? I am staying near whitefield.
And about thing of bike not going straight, it has been there from the beginning. I have never been able to ride the bike with both hands of (to get that thumbs up click). Have you or seen other guys doing that?
p.s: Vibration or no...i just love this beast and its power, though am kinda jealous of the new big brother that just arrived.

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
I was told that the SVC is supposed to tighten the front forks when giving the bike out for delivery. In my case, during first or second service, I complained of jerking in the front. They rectified the issue and told me that they probably forgot to tighten the fork, and it could have been misaligned when I rode through a pothole etc. I suspect the issue you are facing is the same. Just tell the SVC about your problems.Originally posted by debjit1990paul View PostAnd about thing of bike not going straight, it has been there from the beginning. Any bike is designed to go in a straight line if you maintain a straight posture, and take off your hands. This is an inherent tendency, no matter the make or model of your ride. Notice the initial remarks in this AoSR thread - http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/art-safe...-steering.html
Though it's not my place to do so, I'll venture to say that you must wear proper riding gear and try this only in a closed area / deserted roads: the public doesn't appreciate "Look! No hands!" people at all. And one rogue rider will still be seen as a reflection of the entire community. Ride safe
Cheers

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
Thanks a lot for that info with the forks. I'll ask the svc guys. Anyway, about the "look! no hands" riding has been tried on deserted roads only. I dnt intend to try stunts (yet).Originally posted by cep View PostThough it's not my place to do so, I'll venture to say that you must wear proper riding gear and try this only in a closed area / deserted roads: the public doesn't appreciate "Look! I might think of modifying the bike a lil, in a few months...will post back for tips!
Thanks again, cheers!

Re: TVS Apache RTR 180
I dont do much of fast highway rides, even if ride on highways i cruise at around 100 km/h. also the svc guy revved the bike to 10K-11K RPM in the SVC not while riding.Originally posted by Mr_Many_Places View PostPranav do you rip the bike a lot ?? another concern i have is the vibrations have increased post 4K i just poured in Shell oil yesterday, will it become smoother or is it time take my bike to the SVC?
