  • Re: Hero Moto Splendor/Joy/CD-Dawn/Passion

My bike is close to 17,500 kms and thus getting ready for service. I suspect something wrong in my bike. While riding in top gear in a straight road, the bike suddenly turns off and starts by itself and then runs fine as usual. This thing happens within a fraction of a second. It is like turning off the light for 1 second and then turning on.

The same thing sometimes happens when applying sudden brakes and downshifting to 2nd gear, but the bike turns off and it has to be started again. This problem occurs rarely, like once in a week or more, but it is annoying.

My guessing about the problem: Spark plug's life should have been ended. Please tell me whether i am correct or not.

Currently, the spark plug which i use is Bosch mico UR4AC. I have bought a new champion plug a few months back. Suggestions please..

Ok, done with the total restoration with paints. Only thing needed is the stickers. Want to something different. Not the regular OEM stuff. May b the "Classic" inspired.

Paint cost around 2700/- (Including, restoring the shape of Tank, which was seriously dented) + 450 for the front mudguard.
So total cost around 18000/- for complete procedure(Engine over haul, rear rim and tire, silencer,Paint).
Please dont complain about the the stickers, These are temporary arrangement(easily removable), as the bike was looking too bland.
PS: The basket is also old. might be more than 6 years old.

No problem as such. Just clean the slow jet of carburettor and check the spark plug gap. The gap might have increased due to wear on electrode.

Since you are going through 17500 kms service i will ask to do the following.

        1. Clean the chain with kerosene and hose down with pressurized water. Then after drying lubricate with gear oil.

        2. Check the spark plug gap and adjust.

        3. Check the air filter and clean and if excessively dirty change it.

        4. Check the battery terminals and clean them.

        5. Check the cables for free movement and change them.

          HI , all ,

That was good demo of carb cleaning , i removed my carburettor couple of days back and cleaned them refitted them back , now the smooth idiling is lost . After looking at your post i have doubt , the insulator /spacer O-ring faces the carburetor or the intake manifold . I put it such a way that the oring on the insulator is sealed between the manifold and insulator . Guys pls help me

            1. Will do it, you have given the detailed procedure in DIY. Can diesel be used instead of kerosene? We dont get kerosene since we have 2 gas cylinders!

2.Regarding the spark plug, it was replaced around 7,000 kms due to a starting problem. You remember that?. So, is it ok if i change the spark plug to a new one?

            3.Will check it sir.

            4. The mechanic keeps a petroleum jelly like thing in both the terminals after he cleans it. What is that?

            5. Sure sir, I lubricate them, thats the only thing i know!! Can you teach me how to lubricate the throttle cable? While twisting it, it is slightly tight. I want to have a feel like that there is no cable at all while twisting. Every cables are stock cables. Is there any specific life for different cables? If yes, kindly tell me so that i shall replace them.

Had read this story a long time ago and was really fascinated by it it.

The Double Barrel of Hope : AX-200 twin - Team-BHP

Now you know what I'm getting at. Anyone willing to try it on a Splendor? Is is possible in the first place. The first problem I see is the position of the spark plug. No problem for the right cylinder but for the left you'll prpbably have to rotate the block 180 deg to get the spark plug on the left side.

Its easier to turn a two stroke into a twin than a 4s for this very reason. The block can't be rotated as the cam chain runs its length. But if the cam shaft can be connected for both blocks and made to run on one chain then it is possible. At least in theory.

Not only the spark plug but also the timing section, timing, carburettion, valve arrangement and all. But you have taken up a nice point of discussion. Let me think over it and then i will reply.

You can use diesel for cleaning - it does the job okay . But cleaning action of kerosene is much better and faster .
Petroleum jelly is applied to battery terminals to prevent oxidation and corrosion .
Don't lubricate the OE clutch cable and throttle cable - at least . They are friction-free type that never requires lubrication . If you do , they get tight and soon break . Front brake cable , I'm not sure about the type - so I leave it alone . Only Speedo cable can be removed from it's casing - it needs lubrication with grease - once a year .
You can grease the ends of all the cables that is outside the casing while fitting it . You can grease the throttle spindle and inside the throttle grip etc for smooth operation .
If your throttle cable has become tight after you lubed it - replace it now .

                      Hi All,

I finally realized my dream of visiting Goa, and to top it up on my friend's reliable commuter, the Hero Honda Dawn.
Thanks to Sibun for all the support and encouragement lent to me on the night before the ride, my folks were bewildered at the prospect of me covering 580Kms on this puny commuter.
All my other friends who joined me on bigger bikes were initially laughing at my thought of riding the Dawn for so long a distance, but this reliable retro star did not disappoint.
Reached Goa in 12hrs and outdid them bullets by gaining a lead of over 120kms, the bullets never caught up. I only stopped once in 50kms to let the engine cool and two 30mins breaks. Feels so good to have done the whole 1250kms on a small engine, hats of to the HH stables.

My bike was serviced today. Odo reading 17,540 kms.

The chain was cleaned with kerosene and a wire brush. The service centre guy had it.

I did not know that the cables dont need lubrication. It was greased near the lever, as you said. No cables were replaced, since they were working fine.

The speedometer cable broke just last month and was replaced!.

Throttle cable is not that much tight, will replace it at 20,000 km.

Spark plug was replaced with Champion and AFR was also adjusted.

I opted for the same oil, Veedol take off 4t 20w 40

                              ----consecutive posts auto-merged-----

                              Riding experience after servicing.

I am not satisfied with the service this time. Till service, bike was running very good. I mean, good pick up, good pulling power from low rpms to higher rpms. Today, after servicing, the spark plug was changed (champion) and the air acrew was adjusted. At the time of adjusting the air screw, the bike started smoking in black colour when revved. Is this smoking common during adjusting the air screw? Please clarify me. Then, after riding for a few kms, smoking was stopped.

The riding feel was pathetic. There is enough amount of petrol (2 bars) in the tank, but the bike behaves as it is not having petrol. It behaves like it is going to reserve while riding. Pick up has gone down at lower rpms. For example, if you are riding at 30 kmph in top gear and suddenly raise the throttle to 50 kmph, the bike acts like it is going to shut down till 35 kmph, and after that, it pulls normally. This thig happens in every gear.
The bike was serviced in the afternoon today. Again i took the bike to ride in the night today around 8 pm. Usually the bike starts with a single touch of the electric starter for less than a second, but today i started using electric starter for several times but in vain. Then, kick starter did the job. The bike was idling in a fine manner, but when given throttle, it was like going to shut down. It took more than 3 minutes to bring the bike to normal condition. But when i started to ride, same thing happened again (feeling like out of petrol).

So, i went to shop and bought a BOSCH mico u4A and fitted, but could not notice much difference. I am very much worried. I have never ever faced a single problem in engine or related to that till now. This problem really bothers me. Till i overcome this, i bet that i cannot even sleep peacefully, and everytime keep on thinking aout this. Please help me. I want my bike to perform as before.
