Yes , I too think that the CD 100 , CD 100ss up to HF Dawn and Splendors ( possibly the Passions too ) are build with this same type of frame , whereas the the 2 front tubes are just protective braces . The engine is bolted only to the main frame in 2 places . The engine is not a stressed-member of the frame . Neither is the frame dependent on the 2 front downtubes in any way - it can function perfectly without them . Pressed steel frames are an Honda invention which revolutionized the Japanese motorcycle industry . Once the press moulds and jigs are in place , the cost goes down and down and down with numbers rolled out . And the process is very quick and streamlined requiring little manual skill to build the strong frame .

It is not a frameless bike. it is a pressed steel frame bike.
Yes the cylinder and the cylinder head are supported by 4 iron rods in the crankcase. there are also hollow dowel pins at the union of cylinder head to cylinder block and at the union of cylinder block and crankcase.
And i think it is same arrangement for splendor and passion bikes. (experts correct me if i am wrong).
But what amazes me is that the whole engine is bolted to frame only at two places for CD-100 not sure how it is for splendor and passion.

I don't think that this type of frame is still carried over in current day Splendor, Passion, etc.
If this frame is present in today's Splendor, the bike's handling will be comparable to a R15 !!!!!

Early Hero Honda bikes had the pressed steel plate with engine bolted on. But by the time splendors came into the picture the frame changed to double cradle frame type which though it looked like the old frame with extra fittings, was actually a completely different frame altogether.
Btw the splendor, passion, cd100, cd100ss, dawn, joy are all same bikes with minor tweaks and tuning changes. They are same to the level of having interchangeable engine parts.

@RSVB and kathi- Nice looking bikes. Glad to see people are still interested in these bikes and know how to look after them. Else seeing a lot of two strokes restoration. How can we forget sambit restored Dawn. Good to see that here people are respecting these commuter bikes from Hero as todays youths just thinks that these are good for nothing and like only higher capacity bikes. But those who ride these commuter bikes know how joyous it is to ride these bikes.

Next year most probably in february will open up my Joy and return it to factory standards with looking brand new out of showroom look.

As for the the chassis the first model in fact till its end the CD 100 came with pressed steel chassis. The chassis carried the engine at its two mounting point. But the negative point was the chassis was not enough strong to withstand rural area abuses and also the handling was not that good because the engine was hanging from the chassis which caused flex in chassis. The chassis was supported by two cradle bars in chrome where the leg guard was mounted.

But when Hero launched CD 100 SS in 1985 it went on to have the double cradle chassis that you see now. The chassis was lot stronger and handled way better. The reason for going for new chassis was increasing the size of bike and also give added strength to be used in rural india. Infact CD 100 SS was launched for the rural india.

Then in 1993 splendor was launched with same chassis but tweaks in chassis to reduce flex.

The new chassis has the engine as cradle member that is the engine is placed as you place a baby in cradle. The engine is mounted at four points. Two places as in CD 100 to the chassis at the back of engine. Then the engine is bolted to chassis at the underside to the plate that joins both the cradle down-tubes and works as supporting structure for engine.

The beauty of this engine and chassis is that even though they do not have any rubber mounting and are bolted to the chassis directly with studs but still they are smooth and have negligible vibrations unlike competition that uses rubber mounting.

Infact Hero manufactures this chassis themselves and no vendor does that for Hero.

This was all about the chassis and about engines i will tell you all in evening as presently going to office.

And @all thanks for keeping this thread alive and also showing interest in this small commuter which runs day in and out and doesn't complain.

guys my 2010 glamour (60000 km done) is giving out black smoke at very high rpm .at low and medium rpm (70 km/hr) there is no smoke at all
service center guys are telling to replace valve steam seal and also some more parts
another mechanic is saying that it is because of shell 10w40 semi syn oil that i am using that is causing leakage of oil in combustion chamber

please tell what could be the problem and what parts to replace .thanks

Black smoke indicates fuel is not getting properly burnt. It has nothing to do with engine oil.

Do these things:-
1. Clean air filter and if dirty change it.
2. Clean carburettor and re-tune the carburettor.
3. Change spark plug, a defective spark plug will not help combustion.
4. Check battery and change if dead as these bikes have dc ignition and dead battery will cause less current.
And finally if problem is not cured then the valve seats are worn. Open the head, clean carbon and polish the valves. Problem will go.

Which tool is used to unscrew the drain plug of my passion pro? Kindly tell the name and number (size). In snapdeal website, Taparia tools are available. If I am given the correct specifications, I shall order it as soon as possible, so that i can start doing some beginner works of my own.

jeswin- For passion pro drain plug you can use 17 No. socket and l- handle. Get a socket set and a l-handle. Will be helpful in future. Also get ring set of same.

Guys do you know that while splendor, passion,cd dawn, pro, deluxe all have UR4AC as spark plug from mico, but JOY and DAWN both have recommended plug as UR2AC.

I am still yet to see UR 2 AC plug.

For drain plug , No 17 ring wrench(spanner) . No need to buy taparia , those are expensive and are for daily users(mechanics) who tend to wear out tools . I doubt we would ever wear out a tool doing diy . Buy ordinary good brands from local shops .

Congratulations. Extremely well executed job. Don't mean to criticize but if you can find the original stickers (like the unrestored bike) try and get them. The ones you have put were introduced later on. Your bike is a very rare piece with the original Honda engine.

Due to monsoons, my bike got dirty. No matter when I clean it everyday, the next day it will become dirty as before. So waited for some sunshine. Water washed my bike yesterday in Hero ASC. They did a good job and my bike is looking good as before. Took some pictures today to share it with you guys.
One query; At the ASC, there was a passion x pro which was less than 6 months old. The service guy opened the right side of the engine and while fitting it back he fit it with a new gasket like thing which was as same as the perimeter of the engine’s right side. What was that? Then he started the bike with new engine oil. The bike was ok and it started. After that he took the oil can (with that long nozzle) and did something. When he started the bike and revved hard, the xpro emitted white smoke as if there were a 500 mosquito coils where lit. Poor owner!! By that time I got my bike and went away. Why did that bike emit that much smoke??

Feeling so envious of you brother Am waiting to do post-monsoon service on my bike , damn thing is am not getting a full free day . Also bike ran less than 100km last whole month - which is keeping me morose at work all day . Planning to retire early so that I can ride aimlessly around all day without care and go for long trips whenever I feel like .

That is the clutch-side crankcase cover gasket . To be replaced every-time that cover is opened , for example to clean out the rotor-filter . About the smoke , maybe he squirted some oil into the combustion chamber through the spark-plug hole ? They sometimes do that , for example if the piston is not moving freely after the bike has been out of use for a long time .

Hi,
Please have a look at the opening of the carb indicated in oval shape. I had just cleaned my carburettor about 500 kms back. It was sparkling clean then. Before cleaning it was too much filled up with such a grime. Whenever I go near bike after leaving it in the Sun I smell a good amount of petrol. I have recently replaced my Petrol tank cap (I thought of it as a probable culprit but even now it smells like petrol near my bike). Why is there such a grime build up near the opening?

Now please do have a look at the rectangular area Where accelerator cable enters the Carburettor. The rubber cover is broken and is peeling out (as a temporary fix I have covered it will Cello Tape as water used to enter in Carb during washes). I also keep this in my probable list of culprits of Petrol smell.

I have enquired in many shops & Service Centres but none of them sells the rubber cover of entrance to Carb. All of them are telling to get a new carb. I am planning to create a rubber cover with Anabond/ Threebond layers placed on the accelerator cable entrance into Carb.

Any ideas
1. to stop the petrol leakage/ evaporation,
2. to stop build up of grime on the opening of Carb.
As this is going to be my next DIY.
