• SPLENDOR2001 2.5L BATTERY to 5AH Battery Change

hi

i have the 2001 Splendor from HH. i love it and till now i spent only rs6000 for these years for maintenance so i would not like to change it for next five years.

recently this year i did bore work with .25 piston from usha the mileage just around 60kmpl in local riding in markets as it was previously and on high way as usual 67-70 maximum depending upon the braking..

at present i want to change the battery from 2.5L to 5ah battery is it possible as what i have to consider or do changes where and what?
and the budget is also to be as less as possible,

this is becoz i have very poor lighting and problem to ride in night except under street lights which has become little difficult for me with family.

thank you for your valuable suggestions and the mods that are needed..

That is the clutch-side crankcase cover gasket . To be replaced every-time that cover is opened , for example to clean out the rotor-filter . About the smoke , maybe he squirted some oil into the combustion chamber through the spark-plug hole ? They sometimes do that , for example if the piston is not moving freely after the bike has been out of use for a long time .
You can always ride sir, as there is no reason to ride! We like to ride, so we ride.. You have cleared my query. Is that correct by squirting oil inside the combustion chamber?
Meanwhile, my bike has clocked over 19,000 kms., and kindly bear with the poor quality picture.

Dear Friends, Two problems are bugging me (HH Super Splendor Self Start 2006 Model) GOt Engine rebored at 6000rs from local mechanic who was known to colleague as bike stalled mid way. Now find that white smoke comes when revving too hard and also oil deposits forming in Engine Surface (near exhaust connect & upside) Pics are attached here Bike Bore - Imgur Also while riding home 2 days before the odometer / speedometer was making tak tak sound at low speeds and the needle was jerking.. after some time it got ok,, now the needle is calm and shows the speed as we increase / decrease speed but the km counter both on main Km and trip km is not moving forward. Odometer is ok can do without but engine again getting oily after spending 6K is no no. Gotta fire that mechanic & burn down his shop bloody incompetent fellows , will take my colleague with me to his shop and ask him to rectify it.

You spend that Rs 6000 on what ? A re-bore doesn't cost half of that ! Better not visit dishonest & incompetent mechanic again , he'll further mess up instead of correcting it . Moreover , there is no way to easily rectify a botched up bore job .

Looks like you got ripped at the cost as well as the quality of work. For a little more than 6k you could have got it done at a hero workshop with new parts.
Lesson learnt hopefully. Now go get that mech !

Rs 6,000/- seems less to what one of my relative spent for complete engine rework at my home town. I was just visiting home on the occasion of a festival.

The Hero-Honda Splendour already had a re-bore before. Father(relative) of the son(23yr) was reluctant to pay the amount and asked me to pay a visit to SVC. As it was festive-holiday SVC's service bay was closed and pooja was in progress. Engine parts were already replaced, bike was moved to a nearby godown.

I just asked the manager to return all replaced parts and I will look into the bill later. Apparently, father and son have some trust issues pertaining to cash-flows. Anyway, the son is visiting B'luru & is here now(sleeping); will update the amount tomorrow morning.

PS: Son trashed Suzuki-Samurai few months before this motorcycle, that was 16k rupees down the drain.

Edit: Service amount ₹ 14,700/- and apparently there was more than just engine-rework. He says there were other stuff like,
• unbending front forks
• front brake cable
• front fender/mudguard
• headlight cowl, reflector, bulb & all 4 indicator covers.
• new 2.5 Ah Exide battery
• & several others.

This is one of those 'drunk and fell into metalled roadside ditches near village' event you see. He(the son - Suresh) promptly says, returned/replaced parts and bill are at my home with my father; will check up later.

Took Spelndor+ for a spin/ride. With no tacho, no speedo, no ODO & no gear-indicator it was difficult for me cope at first. But isn't this riding/biking is all about? Using our senses!!!

Ride was good, esp

- up-shifts without clutch disengagement, gear shifts were breeze, nice click sound. I didn't know all four gears are up & kick-start in neutral with clutch engaged.
- front brake was not good, got to check the free play, rear was much better.
- throttle response was good.

I asked him to:
- remove handle grips, lever grip(on clutch)
- mud-flap on the front

It felt like riding a naked motorcycle.

He'll be staying here for another 3 to 4 months. So, will be a regular visitor/killjoy to this thread if need arises. Besides, I'm reading this thread from the start to pick up vital info.

It has red plug cap & MICO plug.

Edit-2:
• Opened spark-plug, too much carbon on the ground electrode.
• noticed beeper/buzzer was present but wiring was broken.
• noticed SAI vacuum input from inlet had a missing clip at the end. It had a free movement & oil deposits.
• kick lever had too much play. Can we insert some washer in between?
• Noticed engine oil leaking at the bottom. Wasn't able to pin-point the source. Wiped the area clean & checked oil-level, which was within limit. Apparently it's one of the gasket, let's see.
• noticed that both tyres were remoulded, he says @ 350/- per tyre. I only remember trucks' esp tractors' fat tyres getting remoulded!!!

As he needs the motorcycle tomorrow will be checking on Sunday for more.

cheers

My Splendor's kicker is also too loose, asked my local mechanic the same question you asked. He told a new kicker set costs only 250/-. So he was not ready for jugaad. Planning to replace it sometime later
The Splendor's spare parts are really cheaper!

Last Sunday, went for a 140 km round trip with wife on my Splendor to Vagamon-Elappara from my native place Thodupuzha(Kerala).
Few details of bike:
2001 model
1.2 lakh kms on odo (engine re-bore done at 70k kms)
Clutch discs changed at 50k to BOSCH
Drive chain changed at 80k kms
Rear shocks changed at 90k
Battery changed once, now being ridden without battery
Rear rim changed due to rust causing punctures

No other major parts changed till date.
Reached native on Saturday. The bike's oil was changed to OE Hero, busted kicker oil seal changed, clutch and chain adjusted, checked air and filled fuel. The fill it-shut it-forget it machine is ready to GO!
The bike faired fell through the twisties though was little bit slow on climbing uphills at times (blame it on the heavy rider). The reliable machine never gave up and was a wonderful trip overall. Never knew that cornering with Splendor was so good
Sharing couple of pics from the trip.

No a 5 AH will not fit and not worth the effort. Change the battery to OE 2.5 AH from Amaron. This bike doesn't require a bigger battery,

As for the headlight you must be having the glass model headlamp with Corrugated glass. Change the headlight unit from splendor+ and use Halonix Bulb and light will become bright.

When buying seal beam unit buy OE from showroom or authorized distributor.

Its no use boring a splendor engine as OE bore costs 1600 bucks. If you bore it using USHA piston it will cost Rs. 900 and the workmanship is in doubt.

Also the re-bore splendor engines do not have the sweet sound of OE bore. One kick and you can differentiate bored engine sound from new bore sound.

The skill of the re-boring job is in doubt. And man Rs.6000 for a rebore is daylight robbery. You can re-bore, change the clutch, timing section and also reset the crank in that amount.

Throw away that bore and right away buy a new bore and fit. Just plug and play. Take it to SVC and make a job card for only Bore change and nothing else.

As he needs the motorcycle tomorrow will be checking on Sunday for more.

cheers

Looks like welding to increase the life of brake shoes. This is exactly(JUGAAD what I would do if I had welding equipment at home, or even if a friend had it. Go to any village, jugaads everywhere!!!

Were the Tacho & Speedo accurate/close to actual/theoretical figures?
That Juggad is for worn out drums. Usually when the drums wear out the new brake shoe will have too much adjustment. So they heighten the brake by welding two plates. This way the brake is back to new. It is cost effective than new drums.
SatSon- splendor is one surprise package. Most people usually upgrade from splendor thinking the new bigger bike to be better. And they keep the splendor as second bike and rarely use it. But suddenly when they use it for some day out of blue, then they begin to realize that how much this bike is simple, comfortable, corners like charm and runs for miles before requiring a fuel station.

Update on my Joy:-

Bike is running perfectly. No issues and still on Veedol swift 10 W 40.

Bike was showing some starting problem and was requiring few kicks when cold to start up.

Doubted the spark plug as engine firing and pick up had changed as engine was not feeling free to rev.

I couldn't remember when the spark plug was checked last time. So opened the spark plug and it was sooty which confirmed the plug had gone weak.

Checked by kicking. The current was very thin and reddish. But the current provided by bike was so strong that since the plug was not firing properly the current was jumping from ground electrode to body.

Took it to mechanic as didn't had spare plug at home. Changed it to Bosch R6 with the insulator coming with blue band than green band as previous.

Immediately on starting the bike felt smoother and revved better. Rode it for some kilometers and the bike was knocking at low rpm. Effect of better burn as the old spark plug was not burning fuel properly which the new plug was burning.

Re tuned the bike and bike is pulling like new. Even while starting from stop at traffic, no need of engaging 1 st gear as bike is pulling from 2nd gear without effort.

Thanks Srikany.
It was a short ride infact (70+70 kms). The route is decent with around 3-5 kms in bad shape with potholes. Lots of uphills/downhills involved.
The bike is used by my dad in my native. It was being used by me and my dad before I moved to Chennai for job.
Didn't calculate mileage as the speedo gear and cable is gone and speedo not working for past one year Need to get it recitified next time. But I was happy since it is frugal than my Hunk!
Only difficulty I faced was that the bike loosing power(its a 97cc afterall, and the rider+pillion weighs 150kgs) in some really sloppy roads, when the new gen FZ/Pulsar kids were overtaking us. Infact was happy most of the time, especially when -
- the low end torque allows me to glide over a speed braker in top gear itself
- a throttle blip and shift down in a downhill twisty enjoying the engine beat
- the light front end and bike overall making handling in twisties an easy one
