  • Re: Yamaha YZF-R15

    Hi Guys,
I have a problem with my R15 V1 version. The radiator is not kicking in to cool the engine. I have checked this several times.
I did some checks and repairs as below to check if it works but it doesn't.
    1) I checked the coolant level, it was bit low i filled it but no use. The inlet hose of radiator leaks and fluid is wasted while heating up. Moreover it falls on silencer pipe and create lot of smoke.
    2) once the fluid is wasted it doesn't leak much. I replaced hose thinking it's defective but all in vain. Again the same problem as the engine is too hot and again leakage.
    3) I thought the thermostat is defective and blocking the way of coolant creating excess pressure which in-turn leads to leakage and replaced it also. (checked by boiling old thermostat it worked but took a chance by replacing). Again no use.
    4) I checked the temperature sensor also by boiling but do not know at what resistance the radiator kicks in. However, the sensor resistance reduced but couldn't measure temperature.
    5) only other thing left is to check coolant passage. Disconnected all hoses, drained coolant, blew air through pipes and was able to feel free path through the bore. no traces of engine oil in coolant also.
    6) The radiator relay works fine as you remove the temperature sensor connection, the radiator kicks in with engine warning light.
    7) The only thing left to change is temperature sensor.

Need some ideas from experts to trace out the issue.

    • R15 Version-1 Help !!

      Hello All,

This is Arnab Das. It has been 2 years since I logged in XBHP.

      Hope you guys are fine.

In this two years, there has been a lot in my life. Changed jobs, got married, changed places. Previously for 1.6 years I was working in Shimla. Now working in Ahmedabad.

In ahmedabad I got hold of a second hand R15 (2008 model, 19,200 kms run). Previously was skeptical about its performance but after riding it for more than 1200 Kms in one month, I can say " hats off Yamaha ". What a product. My ride is almost 35 kms daily in highways.

Now, coming to the real point is that I have changed the engine oil to the mentioned grade. But now i want to do a full through service of my bike.

Can you guys please tell me what are all the things that I need to consider for servicing after 20K. Is there any need to touch the engine? (i hope not, still asking). Also expecting a tentative cost.

Your help will be highly appreciated.

Not much pictures with me. Will be Uploading later.

      Thanks and Regards
      Arnab das

It seems you have tried almost every thing. You may have a blocked radiator and radiator veins have blockages.

Your point number 6 is also indicative that you may have a defective temperature sensor.

Thanks Abhimanyu!I took out the radiator, washed with water and blew air from one side and air is freely moving from other side. Even coolant circulates and radiator is evenly heated.

Today will check keeping a resistance pot and change resistance until radiator kicks in and will find the resistance at which it kicks in, Thinking to check with sensor of my friend's R15

Today will do checks on sensor. If it still doesn't work, I will take it yamaha guys and ask them to check.

Today, After all the trials, with last hope, I went to Bangalore Wheels Yamaha and asked for the temperature sensor. They quoted some 740Rs but when I checked, it had spanner marks and seal was opened. They said like it was checked and put in packet again .I asked for another piece and they didn't have any.
Later, I went to JC road Yamaha Spare shop but even there, they had old stock of 2009. I felt convinced and the MRP was also less 710Rs. I took the same for 650Rs and left the shop.
As soon as I reached home, I removed old sensor, Poured some coolant in that hole to avoid air bubble near sensor. Fixed the new sensor in the same place and connected the wire clips. Started the vehicle and gave some throttle, left some time for idle. All the hoses were intact and getting heated. After some minutes the engine was hot but radiator overflow pipe had a small hole through which the coolant was dripping down. I cut the front portion and re-inserted the pipe, then Started the bike again.
After the radiator was completely hot, the fan kicked in. I was like .

Made the fan to kick in twice, put off the engine, cooled and checked all coolant levels/leakages.
Fixed all shield and side covers. Started for a small test drive. The engine felt smooth and revvd freely!!
            Thanks,

@All: I got an LED tail lamp panel fixed into my V1's tail lamp.
This is made by a student in Mumbai, hand made painstakingly and direct fit.
Please get in touch with me for his no.
I'm posting here, since the Accessories thread has hardly any hits.
Please consider for your V1s and recommend to other V1&FZ owners. I would feel happy if you encourage this student.
                P.S. It's very affordable!

The best part is once you get to know more about your bike you might or rather will tend to experiment more on your bike during the learning curve. Nothing wrong yet. The urge and curiosity develops rapidly that would push you in to a confidence zone.

Please set limits and play around. Happy learning!

Heart is the cooling system and engine oil. Make sure all fluids are full.
Change coolant as it might be more than 2yrs old.
Check brake pads and replace if necessary.
Check if they are stock tyres or some good ones. Replace to good/stock ones as it can give you more fun and confidence.
And post the pics if you can.
That's all I can think of now.

@papan_506.. Arnab Bro..Its great to know that you got a r15. I have also bought a second hand r15..upgraded from p220. I hope you got the bike without any modification and having everything in stock. baruc2003 already mentioned to check disk pads and stock tires. ..check the cone set condition and grease everything you can. If you have any issues with the stock 3A battery for the headlights and poor horn then you can go for a 5A battery which is almost a direct fit after removing the foam from the battery case, which I did. Going through the forum will help you a lot.Did you get the user manual with you ? I didnt get it from the owner so I've downloaded a pdf. r15 v1 manual

LED tail lamp panel you got... Wish I could get one. How is your bike doing? I think you've sorted out the air leaking issue.I went for lubing the chain sprocket, cleaning air-filter and spark plugs today. I didn't have much time so I will go for greasing the coneset tomorrow. I wish I could do these stuffs at home.. lacking space and tools. The mechanic messed up with the spark plug while cleaning as he told me that it gone damp and had to be put into a gas burner for 3 hours ( the gasket-electrode part)..I don't have any idea about it. He installed a local brand spark plug.. as I was in a hurry I could not do much about it. While returning home I could feel some initial lack of pulling.. I will sort out the spark plug issue tomorrow. I am planning to go for split fire cable and NGK iridium plug. ngk spark plug I am feeling like a stupid about the 3 hours burning thing of the electrode part of the spark plug.. can anyone please let me know about this.. I got the spark plug with me. Here are the pictures of it ..

@Sarvajit bro.. that's one good looking

Hello nfs_asphalt! If you need led taillights, You can search r15 taillight in olx or quikr. You get contacts of people selling led ones in your location. It saves the power as our battery is less rated one. I replaced mine with led without panel but with two level lights . Direct fit on the existing holder, just like bulb. Paid some 200. But this panel one looks good than mine.

I put ngk iridium plug yesterday some 550rs and motul 300v 950rs. Engine is smooth and free revving. Unsure it's because of engine oil or ngk plug
