  • Re: Yamaha YZF-R15

Hello to everyone! I have been a regular visitor of this forum, registered in yrs ago but I avoided posting as I didn't own a bike until recently I bought a used R15 V1. The bike has run 36k kms on odo. The bike is in due for engine oil change and front tyre replacement, the right side fairing has a little piece broke on the edge so I'm changing that as well. I need your guidance on basic things I need to take care of to bring the bike to excellent condition. Here's some of the problems I've experienced. The front suspension makes squeaky sound when I'm riding over potholes, and I heard the 'thud' noise 2 or 3 times. Is the suspension in due maintenance? If yes, what sort of? The rear tyre skids under hard breaking on tarmac. I have read everywhere the r15 tyres are grippy and don't lose grip on even wet roads. (Except on loose sand and mud). I have zapper s on rear. Isn't that the stock one? There's vibration and noise from the front fairing when I'm riding at high speed. I couldn't tell if the noise is from side fairing where it's little broke. I plan to get motul chain lube and clean. (Does anybody know where I can buy it from coimbatore? ) I visited a local yamaha showroom in my town and asked them to look at the bike. They said they'll check and tell if spark plug, air filter, radiator coolant and disc brakes need replacement. I'm so confused I don't even know what to look after first. Please list it for me guys. It'll be truly helpful.

The squeaky sound coming for front suspension is very common and everybody else does experience the same. So worry not.
'Thud' sound means worn out cone set/razor kit so get it check and have it replaced if it needs. And its price is around 3k
Also get suspension oil changed if its not found to be done in service record history which actually is due every 10k kms
Regarding fish tailing, R15's are provided with Nissin calipers which are sharper than the ones at front or Brembo(Bybre) which are found on most of Indian sport bikes so you cant avoid it but to rely more on front brakes which are very much effective and efficient. You slowly will get adjusted to this. It took me time to get used and adapted as well.
Vibration at high speed is caused by broken holders of fairing and panels or when mirrors are removed along with mirror holders or when screws needs to be tightened.
With respect to chain maintainace, there are many automobile outlets in any city and most of it sell chain lube and chain cleaners. I currently use motul earlier to which have used Yamalube(~200bucks) , release-on (~Rs.250). You can google and confirm the performance for yourself.
Check the service book final pages and you will find what part has to be replaced at what interval.

Experts! I have been using my R15 V1 since 2010. Recently noticed that my bike was skidding when I break from 60kmph to stop, even if the braking is steady. I took it to my trusted mechanic and he noticed cracks in the rear tyre. He adviced me to change it. I changed to a tyre with specification MRF Zapper 120, 80/R17. Now I feel that the road grip is good though the ground clearance has increased by quite a bit. Can you please let me know what would be consequences of this tyre upgrade.

        • RIM bend on Yamaha R15

Yesterday, I hit a pothole at high speed and the front and rear rims of my Yamaha R15 sustained bends.

I took it to SVC guys to see if they can correct the bend but they said I have to change the rims.

I'm looking to find out if there is any place I can go to in Bangalore to get my rim bend corrected.

I'm aware of JC Road (one answer for all questions) but they don't do a decent job.

          Thanks in advance.

The rims are made of alloys, and alloys break when you try to hammer it back to its original shape. So any kind of work on a bend alloy is not worth the time and money being spent and definitely not worth the risk.
Move forward and apply for a insurance claim and get the new rims fixed.

              Cheers

                Hi guys,

My bike is 18k kms old. The thing is, when i run the bike on a flat smooth road, at constant RPM, i feel the power being delivered is kind of jerky. Its not very obvious, and you wont notice it if you just sit and start riding, but if you really try to feel the engine, you might just notice it. It surely cannot be uneven road, i was riding it on mysore's ring road (pretty good smooth tarmac). Also, when i'm riding it on 4-5th gear at 7-8k rpm, i feel like the RPM needle is vibrating(wobbling) a tad more than what its supposed to do.

Now i told this to the SVC folks, but i received really poor service there. My chain and sprockets were due changing ( as told in the last service by the very same mechanic), i told them to change that aswell. When I was finally called to collect the bike, very late like around 7pm, they had already closed down everything, all the mechanics had changed and were about to go home. I noticed that neither the chain/sprocket was changed, and even Oil wasn't changed. They charged me some 500 bucks. On inquiring, since they were in a haste to leave for home, they told "bike perfect, no problem" and went. So apparently, they had not checked anything. Just cleaned the bike, cleaned/lubed the chain and that's that.

Now the bike has run about 5k kms without oil change, chain makes a lot of noise, and the bike is just not smooth. I feel power delivery is very erratic. Also in the r15 v2.0 thread, they mentioned the quality of yamaLube oil also gone down.

Should i go for a fully synthetic oil this time, what grade ? ( there's a shell bunk near my place where they change the oil aswell ).
What could be wrong and what exactly should i tell the mechanic to check for this variance in power delivery ?

Any idea about good mechanics in Mysore ?

Bike ran 5k kms without any oil change? That's very long and the oil is well past its best time. You should change the oil immediately. You can move to a fully synthetic oil (preferably Motul 7100) or a semi-synthetic one (preferably Motul 5100) with grades like 15w50/20e40/20w40 etc. Yes Yamalube's quality is gone now as it is no more a repackaged Motul. And I guess because of the oil issue the power delivery is erratic.

Semi-Synthetic (SS) or Fully Sunthetic (FS) will draw in too much discussion and debate. My personal opinion would be to go for semi-synthetic unless you're not using your bike for full-on racing. Else semi-synthetic oil gives you almost the same performance as fully synthetic for normal road use. Whatever you change to try to keep the grades within those three figures, as India is a relatively hot country and there's no requirement of thinner grades likes 5w30 or 5w40. But FS oils last longer, almost twice the life span of SS oils. But FS oils also cost almost twice that of SS oils.

At 18k kms the bike is due for a chain sprocket kit change. Change it as early as possible.

Thanks for the reply, any idea about the price of the chain and sprocket set ? I'm really skeptical of the service centers here in Mysore, malpractices are quite common and i have observed it personally.
Thanks for the oil recommendations. Guess SS(15w50) is the way to go. My friend uses the same in his thunderbird. I don't do any racing whatsoever.
I have no clue, but what are tappets ? What i read mostly is get your bikes tappets adjusted, which solves many problems.

                      Ok. So lots of questions...

                      1. Well in V2 it costs something around 3.5 to 4.5k INR. I don't rememeber correctly. If you're skeptical of the service centers in Mysore, then you can go to Bangalore Wheels or Pacer Yamaha. As far as I am aware, these two places provide good service.

                      2. If you're going for SS (15W50) then Motul 5100 will be the best option for you. Remember to change the oil filter also while changing oil, as after 5k kms it's already gone.

                      3. Tappets are in other words valves. These actually control the air flow to the combustion chamber. In R15 the tappet clearance should be 0.2 mm or a little more for the engine to perform correctly. It should not at all be less than that else the engine will not be breathing and it will struggle. Direct results of a faulty tappet setting are:

                      a. Engine not being able to sustain itself in idle RPM.
                      b. Throttle response will not be as good as you expect.
                      c. FE will come down.
                      d. Overall, you will not enjoy the ride which is really irritating.

Only reason to go with SS (15W50) is because ive heard of it from my friend , if you can suggest any specific grade, i'll go with that
Bangalore Wheels, ive also heard its good, and i guess it's better to go there and get it thoroughly checked. I plan to pick up a new lid, get geared up from bangalore so it's a pretty good idea.
I plan to go on long rides as soon as the temp during the day subsides. So better to have the bike up and running perfectly.

No specific grades. Motul 5100 comes with this grade. And it's very much suited for Indian condition, as I mentioned earlier, which is hot on average. You can also go for 20W40 or 20W50. Interestingly, the Yamalube used by ASCs is 15W50 grade SS oil. So no worries and go ahead.
