The Fully Synthetics we have available in India are 10W40 or 5W40 ones. Though they are better you won't find that much of a difference using them in an R15. I've been using Fully Synthetic oil in my R15 for the past 14K KMs. I can only feel slight betterment in smoothness of my engine but am expecting it to work well inside the engine.

    Where are u from BTW?

I'm using Motul's 300v Factory Line. Its a fully synthetic oil. Costs close to 700bucks.

Most of them are sold out. Difficult to find. Yamaha did clearly mention that they will be limited production... so tough luck.

You may however write to their Regional Office to check this.

I use iftex for my car and I find a clear difference when I use iftex. But on the R15 I just don't.

also send the email to [email protected]. that goes to the people at Surajpur plant.

The news is that the Engines are now made in India. Couldn't get clarity on
whether they are just assembled in India or that some of the parts are already being made in India. But Yamaha does have plans to source some parts in India for worldwide supply. All the 3 new colours have new engines (nothing changed but they are not built up in Indonesia unlike the initial lots). Only the Blue bikes are not produces in the past few months and they belong to the old lots with made in Indonesia engine.

If that means something to you, pickup the blue one before the stocks run out. Once that stock is over they'll produce the blue ones too in India.

Having said that, I am not too sure what difference it would make between Made in Indonesia and Made/assembled in India engines.

That SG grade oil is different. They have changed the can, print, oil colour (old one was in gold colour and thicker. new one is red colour), JASO Certification number, product code... almost everything.

Thing is, the new can is 100% ditto Motul can. It is their standard design internationally. The old oil was made by Exxon Mobil and as far as I can remember the can design was a bit different. I wanted to confirm this one for myself. On the new one they don't mention manufacturer's name but just list Yamaha Motors India itself.
i am assuming the new sl grade is better than the sg grade in the manual.
i used this and started getting gearbox shift probs ,i pumped out a little oil from the engine & it is much better now ,

Hey! what about the point made by HydBiker back few pages.. that this days the engine are assemble in India and not in Indonesia any more... someone please throw some light over it...
I do read somewhere.. that from 2010-2011 Yamaha will start making engines in India.. now that they have decided to operate a plant from Pakistan... I think Yamaha is doing a great job of expansion...

                        • @All: To those of you enquiring about new owners' manual coz you've lost/misplaced yours, I enquired at the SVC here.. I was told that you need to lodge a formal complaint with the showroom (along with the serial number mentioned in your manual on the service pages), & they will forward it to the Yamaha India HO.. You'll get a duplicate manual for FREE, if Yamaha India HO obliges..

@Sarvajit: I got my 3rd service done past weekend, & found some accident panels around at the SVC. I checked them out to see if I could take a asticker out for you, but its not possible to get the golden sticker off neatly & re-use it.. The rascal who took your bike's sticker off definitely had a piece of paper-mess in his hands after the dastardly act..
You'll need to get one locally made, however bad it turns out to be..

I wanted to know about the comfort level of the bike. the bike has a sporty riding position but is it more sportier than rtr??? how comfortable is it for city use. i currently hav a commute of 25kms one way to my college(this might increase to 30kms) might involve some stop-go traffic.would it be comfortable???? i just love the looks of r15. any issues to pay special attention to in r15? which colour wud be the best and 1 silly question- Can a helmet lock be fitted on the r15, where can the helmet be locked in r15 as i cant always carry helmet with me. plz tell about mileage also.

Not very common to see an rtr owner going for an r15. Anyway, here's my take on things..

                              Pros :
                              • Looks (as you yourself pointed out..!) but that's subjective, some ppl don't like the tail part, I am quite neutral in that respect. Rest of the bike looks awesome enough.

                              • Very refined engine. Cruising around 6-8k rpm in 6th gear on the highway is actually soporific.

                              • Handling - nothing comes close. Lean a little to the side you want to go, and whoops, you're already there.

                              • Ergonomics. Yes, really. I'm 5'9", on the heavier side. Yesterday I covered 30+30km (to work and back) and then 40+40km (to attend a concert), so that's around 140kms, quite a lot of it in the city. NO pains whatsoever. Body adapts to the sporty position as long as you learn it properly in the beginning.
                              • Braking - It is the BEST. Chassis does a brilliant job of keeping the bike straight and stable without extra effort from the rider. Can stop and turn on a dime as the expression goes.
                              • Tires - Yes. This needs to be told to some chaps who change the tires of the r15 first thing after they get the bike, for looks. NOT GOOD. The rubber is a softer compound from MRF. It sticks to the road like feviquick, no skidding whatsoever while braking or whatever it may be.
                              • Engine loves to be revved (but I don't wanna talk about this to an RTR owner ) - There is a certain 'growl' that comes from the engine when you rev it to 8k and above. Its just.. orgasmic. (excuse the expression but there's no better way to put it) 8k RPM also puts you smack dab in the power curve of the engine. The bike just pulls and pulls like crazy. But then again, how many times can you hit this rpm in the city and stay there? Think about that.
                              • Gear shifts are smooth if done properly. I got the hang of it, but sometimes they seem a bit hard, especially while riding in traffic.

                              Cons:
                              • Low end torque - This is an issue for many owners, especially a few that have gone from probably a higher capacity bike to the R15. I find it to be enough (probably because I rode a 100cc bike for 5 years before I got the R15)
                              • Gives an impression of moving slower than it actually is. Higher speeds in the city (70-90kmph) don't seem that fast. I don't know whether this is really a 'con'. But for ppl like me who've had to rev the hell out of a 100cc mill for so long to stay at 80kmph (SO, this point probably wont apply to you but may be helpful for some one like me), it's a bit dangerous to rely just on 'feel', as I've made a judgement call based on just that, which led to my first and hopefully ONLY fall trying to avoid a guy who stopped suddenly in front of me.
                              • Sand on the road or slush, if you just use the front brake, God help you. Tires are too prone to skidding if you take it off-road. My suggestion is keep your eyes open, and if you already ARE in a patch of loose sand / slush and have to brake, then alternate between front and back brake, that too in moderation. Panic braking on anything but tar = totalled R15 and totalled rider (if no proper gear)
                              • Palm discomfort - Its unavoidable for any one riding the R15 in stop n go city traffic. I suggest you go for gloves with good palm padding. At least get the el-cheapo leather gloves till you can get a good pair. The same costed me 80 bucks here, and it gave me awesome 'abrasion resistance' too, when I fell.

Those are some things that I've experienced first hand (except the skidding on sand part as I've had a lot of ppl warn me about this beforehand) and tried to give you in detail.

City mileage that I got : 42.59 KMPL on Shell Super petrol (calculated tank full to tank full)

Colour - If you want to attract the attention of almost everyone you pass by in day + night, then Yellow is your first option followed by Red (the new colours). In my opinion yellow + white + black theme of Impact yellow R15 is just too good. Blue looks default Yam and you cant go wrong with it. Black is sleek, sexy, stylish (but I don't like the new black with white stickering as much as the full black theme)

Any friend of yours who owns the R15 can show you the proper riding position, or you can always ask us.
