  • Need some info on riding for first 1000 km

    Hi All,
Please give some first hand info on how to handle my new R15(Yellow). I am keeping the rev levels around 4000 rpm.

What will be the optimum speeds for each gear and is the 4000 rpm level good enough. I get a feeling that in 6th gear at this rpm levels are not correct, am I stressing the engine or something.

Please let me know what you guys have to say. Thanks!

More details about the mods coming soon..for now, everyone just review how much the difference is. And this is just a testing video, taken just behind my colony. A better video will come up soon!
You guys seriously have guts. I'm slowly collecting my wits scrambled all over the streets, courtesy whatever accidents I had. Need a trackday badly to understand my limits...

And along with details, plz post the next video in the correct orientation.

Main thing is while running-in, Avoid 5000rpm before the first 500kms. After that you can go upto 7500rpm (check your user manual for a conformation on that). Don't hold a throttle position for long. Vary it.

Also this is advice, not something you must do. Within the entire run-in cycle, I had ridden hard about 4-5 times at strategic intervals. Red-lined 4th & 5th. So you may do the same, or run-in normally.

And yes, 4000rpm in 6th gear is luggging the bike. The 6th gear is useful only 60kmph onwards.

Rest, there's lots of info on this thread. Search away!
      You get the point?? :D

              .......

Now, I never ever overtake w/o visibility being a 100%. I still overtake on corners but only I am 110% sure and I can see through them.

Look far and wide, don't 'target-fix'

All those days are gone and now you should have less of 'oh crap' moments, they shouldn't increase. I believe I am a faster rider than earlier, but not reck-less and in crowded places or while approaching villages I slow. Even if I spot cattle/d0gs, I slow down. Instincts and reaction do save the day and so is experience and there is no substitute of logging max miles you can(this is where I am failing miserably nowadays).

This post is OT, but please excuse me.
I second everything you said here.
              @sheelpriye & svjhonda:

My only major accident on a two wheeler was on the R15 only, and it was a strange mix of causes. An overly inflated rear tire(had to use a tubeless tire sealant aerosol to inflate it). And the valve went bad due to the rubber fluid, making it impossible for pressure to be decreased. I was on a short trip then, and had to continue my journey. It was an unknown road, lots of curves..and I was just enjoying zip-zapping through them until a very steep hairpin bend(almost a u-turn) came, and I knew my tire cant take it. So tried to turn as much as I can and then went off the road, and fell in the gravel there. The bike toppled, but I just ended up with an injured wrist. Luckily, I could use my brain well instantly then, and hence evaded skidding and falling on the tarmac. From then on, I never push when the road is unknown, and learned that replacement is better for bike parts, instead of trying to do some jugaad and risk our lives. Apart from these, I also follow the "no overtaking unless 100% visibility" rule and slow down everytime I see a dog/pig/cattle or a kid/old person anywhere near the road. And yes, these rules are worth everything in every way, I never had an accident again, and avoided so many accidents because of these rules. And ofcourse, the R15 is so forgiving!

There was no more tarmac at my left, it was a sharp turn towards the right which showed up very suddenly. I didn't want to panic brake, because I knew my rear tire would then give away, and I would've got wounded worser. So, negotiated the turn as much as I can, slowing down as much as I can in the meantime. I was actually negotiating the turn just to buy some more tarmac, as there was no straight left in front of me. I knew there was no way I can complete that turn with the speed I was carrying(around 50-60kmph). It was a little like a ghat section, just more extreme. As I knew I had to fall, I chose a softer spot than tarmac. I still tried to control the bike, but the gravel was too coarse and there were rocks too. The bike first slid, and then toppled after hitting the ground, but I was away from the bike by then.

                • Finding it very difficult to locate tyres for the bike. searched whole of JC road (as much as i know) no one has stock. pefect rider wants to charge 2.8K for front and 3.5K for rear. orion motors does not have stock for front tyres. i am getting MRF 90-90 17" Nylo Grip FS front tyre for about 2K. what do you think should i got for it. apart from size is it very different from 80-90 FY that come with stock.

                  • R15 dry cell battery in Hyderabad

                    Guys,
let me know where I can buy the R15 dry cell battery in Hyderabad.
Mine has given up and the bike is not starting.

It's under warranty. Took the letter to Mindas. No use. they are out of stock.
Just let me know where I can buy one. A Tata battery would be better.

Hope you all can understand the situation I am in.
Yes, I have seen GOD. He wears the no. 46 and rides a Yamaha errr Ducati :)

                        Which phone?

And my last accident was well, can't say why it happened. A freakin bus cut across my path at 60+. while I'm braking and dodging it, my front tire went over some oil and even before I knew it, I was sliding, MotoGP style (with my hand raised to be visible to traffic coming from behind) on the road... Kolkata streets are dangerous. Seriously. Ask any motorist.

The only major accident I had was I didn't see where I was going.

I was riding with a fellow Motorcyclist and we were cruising at a steady 90kmph and we both were comfy and were sitting ducks at this speed for past 120kms or so.

Came a small bridge, he overtook a bus, moved to his left, but when I was parallel to this bus, I saw a speeding Indica right unto my face.

Had a spill, the Motorcycle got damaged, but I was lucky, just a small bruise.

If I could see the Indica coming, i wouldn't have gone. But why did I go?
I was young, didn't want to lose the sight of my friend and thought nothing would happen to me and I could make it.

I couldn't see because of my friend's luggage and the hump.

Now, I never ever overtake w/o visibility being a 100%. I still overtake on corners but only when I am 110% sure as I can see through them and spot no obstacles.

^This accident took place in 2005 and I had another spill in 2007(I was foolish then), but have matured enough to know where to put in my nose and rub it.

In 2007, it wasn't my fault but still, I will let you know as it is funny.

Electricians were working on an electric pole at ~10:30pm and as I was passing, one of them jumped on me as someone had thrown a stone (jokingly) and he fell on my bike. I was 50 mtrs away from home.
Knee had a hair-line fracture and I was on bed-rest for 47 days

All those days are gone and now you should have less of 'oh crap' moments, they shouldn't increase. Yes. Now I'm extra careful. Which is why with so many new safety parameters in my head, I found going that fast (in the video) a task. Nevertheless, I know I'm capable of more. But for that I need a safe environment to practice riding to the limit.... MMSC Track, here I come!!

exactly svj. it might've taken a mighty amount of time, money and effort to complete that build. the beauty of it is that he is a one man show. brilliant!(Indian John Britten?)

and do test your topend and post it asap. i've already contacted joel for the exhaust and he quoted the price. but i might have to wait months to get one.

and how much does your spark plugs last. mine have done 7000km and its already starting to erode. i'm on 300v 15/50(oil is great as you said. better top end performance guaranteed. thumbs up and thank you for the recommendation). and i never uses premium fuel. uses the regular 87 and thrashes it all day long. adjusted plug gap twice but still. does showroom guys stock ngk g power?

I have to replace oil & chain before attempting any high rpm stunts...

Lets see, next month probably. Will change the plug again. Haven't checked the gap for 7k kms!
