    • 70-80 over a pothole is asking for trouble , if it was with a pillion , then man thats too risky not for just the bike but for yourselves ... .

anyway i'm interested in the replacement costs as well , coz i think thats the only option i have left to solve my problem ...

Man compared to this Nand's probs seem trivial (not that they are ).

That too on the way to a trip. Damn thats tough.

I sincerely hope this is a one-off case and that the rims are'nt that brittle for everyone.

I hope no one was injured when this happened.
dude i once saw an accident here in the srilankan news... a brand new FZ-s with a month ago registered number in an accident.. the front rim was broken in 3 peices... not just bent but broken like a biscuit and a few crumbs all over the place.... • This is really strange!
Ive heard about poor quality rims on YAMAHA but ive never faced this issue in spite of falling in to serious pot holes above 50km/h!(touchwood*)
anyway try getting it replaced under warranty even if it means fighting with them!thts a serious damage and dont tell them you were doing 80!

Their was no pillion and the person on FZ weighs around 65 kg . I was on my R15 and I weigh 75 kg . Another person who weighs 75 kg was on his Pulsar . Strange , we were biking at more or less same speed and went through the same pothole , but Mag Wheels of only FZ gave up.

Supposedly we were on NH7 and 70-80 is optimum speed anyone would think on highway. Just that my friend was lucky enough not to get hurt. This is a case of sheer poor quality of Mag Wheel (Though I guess similar Mag wheels are on my R15)

This incidence happened on our way to Kuntala falls. We were stuck at Nagpur Gate(around 160 km from Hyderabad) with this incidence . The nearest service centre was 15 kms away at Nizamabad. Went there to get the mag wheel . We were unlucky . The Yamaha showroom was shut down and a TVS Show room has come up . Called our friends to find out nearest service station or showroom. The Yamaha site still listed the shut down showroom at Nizamabad . Went and had a talk with people there at TVS showroom and they confirmed that there was Yamaha show room earlier . They gave us the no. of a local store that stocked Yamaha part and we called that person . Well he didn't stock FZ parts and hard luck again . Heard that there was a Yamaha service center 25-30 kms away. Couldn't find the no. and ride there to find out was our final hope. Went further 30 Kms to that place (Armur) . No luck yet again . The service center had every Yamaha's bike parts except FZ .
We were left with no option other than abandon our trip and transport the bike to Hyderabad(150 kms plus from that place) . We spent around 2.1 K for the transportation . Took the bike straight to Pearl Yamaha Kondapur . Called the in charge and blasted him for poor quality (we had to blast someone after a bad day) . He got the bike , evaluated the condition and assured that he ll take care of that under insurance (not under warranty ).
That's the status as of now. I ll ask my friend about his FZ tomorrow

in this case i can think of only two reasons....

                1. the wheel might have a hairline crack from the beginning itself and the pothole gave a death blow to it.
                or
                2. it might have suffered similar kind of stress while riding before and the pothole was the final one....

try to find out why the wheel broke as it will help other members as well....

There must be some difference in the quality of the alloys...I think R15 is made for racing....it must be having high quality alloys...

                    • The Fazer is supposed to be a touring bike, right?
And it is just an FZ with fairing!

So why can't the FZ go touring?

Fazer is supposed to be a tourer only in the eyes of Yamaha... A street bike with a fairing need not be a tourer, but many guys including me does touring on our FZ/Fazer... there is absolutely no problem touring on FZ/Fazer... anyway FZ is said to be street bike... the advantage of Fazer wrt. FZ is the good wind protection by the fairings...

in my opinion a Fazer can be a very good tourer if it has a more top end cruising speed(like ZMA) and also good pillion comfort

                        • I have my first service coming up this week so have some questions:

                          1. Can I trust the SVC (Yamaha factory shop, probiking centre, in Bombay) to put in genuine oil etc? What about the cost that they quote, as free service is free only for labour? Should I get my own oil instead? :P

                          2. Can we stand by the bike and see it get serviced? Usually they shove us in the waiting room. Just to ensure he drains the oil and doesn't top it off :P. Is it better to wait or can we leave the bike there?

                          3. I like the extra mudguard!! It gives weight to the rear light quite well. How much would it cost to attach it?

                          4. This is my first motorcycle, so I'm unable to compare the performance with any other like clutch too tight etc. Are there any "generic and common" changes people are getting done in their FZ during the first service?

                          5. What things I need to check and/or tell them before taking delivery of my bike to ensure my first service has been complete?

                          Thanks,
                          RK

Well then, maybe Yamaha will learn from its mistake and upgrade its engine in the near future

                              1. you can get your oil. the usual cost of free sservice is that of oil priced at 220rs and of oil filter another 50 rs. whether they will put genuine oil or not depends on the svc.
                              2. it is very rare that they will allow you into the service center area as it is closely monitored on cctv you will be able to wait for thr service only once or twice as you might have some other work to do so you will have to learn to trust them in this regard at least for 1 or 2 times and then take a decision whether to go to the same svc or not.
                              3. i dont know what rear mud guard you are talking about it.
                              4. if you are feeling comfortable than no need to make those changes.
                              5. there is nothing you can check apart from cleanliness but you will feel a difference in the engine noise if the oil is changed (this is also subjective and depends on people some feel some do not feel even if they put full synthetic.)
