Honda splendors too do 100k kms without a major problem, according to the splendor thread. I believe, more than the kms, type of engine oil, its how we ride that determine the engine life. And I think argee is one of the best riders we have, simply because its difficult to survive on Indian roads at the rate he does

I read shims need to be changed regularly? How expensive an affair is that? Thanks

One shim cost rs 170-180rs. We need 4 of them 2 for inlet and 2 fot exhaust. The sizes vary as per the bike. Hence please ask.a.competent svc to do this job. One wrong shim and you are into heavy trouble.of valve getting bent. Svc should use a feeler gauge to measure the correct size please say no if the svc dont have a feeler gauge.

So 170X 4 shims = 680 rs for shim only.
Labour is around 800-900 rs.

Cheers,
Sanjay

Thanks, I read I believe in this thread, it's around 390 a shim! Anyways, like you pointed out, it's around 13K KMS or so, that it needs looking at after proper riding and not a regular affair.

My 3 year old cbr250 has 23k kms, no shims were changed. Honda has removed shims from the list of warranted parts, so I believe shims change depends on how you ride the bike. Some guys have changed at 20k, some at 12k.

It is 170-180rs per shim. Verified at svc.

Guys I did something really stupid yesterday, I was riding, had a open stretch, opened up my bike was at 140 at 5th gear, forgot to go to 6th :l, I'm jus worried if NY engine will get screwed, I don't ride like rash or fast, just the occasional Bursts, but I want to know what could happen to the engine, and I want to know what speed I would hit at 6th gear max? 150-160?

shims need to be changed only if the valve clearances are out of spec.. what size shim is used will depend on the calculations arrived to meet the correct valve clearances. these are not something like say an oil filter that needs to be replaced at set intervals.

Hi Deathwing,

That is not stupid, its getting carried away. Do not worry, there is a rev limiter to limit the rpm. When ever you do redline the engine, make sure you dont stay longer in that zone. Occasional burst is not going to hurt the engine much.

That's good to know, I can't stay too long in that speed, with the kind of roads we got, it was tidal park stretch, and I am testing a temporary exhaust pipe, I keep my bike mostly below 5-6k rpm for the most part, I get fantastic mileage tho. Jus was like wtf maxing out at 140, then I realized I had another gear lol, soo stupid of me. And I have another doubt, if I mod my bike and I mean performance mods, does all the horsepower and torque figures change in the rpm line too? Like as in will It like have more power over the redline , jus a doubt.

What sorts of performance mods you are planning ? Plonking a free flow exhaust will not do any wonders and there will not be any significant power gain, you can expect 1-2bhp power gain at the crank but RWHP will remain near about same.

If freeflow exhaust are used, many other changes has to be done to make the freeflow exhaust work optimally. Check previous thread in which psr sir mentioned few insights on performance upgrades.

Saw a group of 2-3 250R riders in Mangalore last week with one or two of them carrying a Gopro on their helmets. Anyone from here? They had saddle bags so I guess they were on a tour.
