  • Re: Honda CBR 250R

    Hello fellow-mates,

Since a month, I was hearing an irritating 'metal pinging' noise from my engine (no, it's not the knocking noise); the one that starts from 5000 rpm and diminishes at 6000 rpm. Many people commented that it is due to the engine's harmonics with vibrations tending to peak out at certain frequency while another group suspected that it is due to gaps in fairing panels. I didn't find it convincing because the bike was smooth before then. So I took it to my ASC. After a test ride, the CBR trained personnel of the ASC agreed that this is abnormal and suspected it to be a valve issue. ASC had the bike for a week and returned it after resolving the issue. They changed the rocker arm and camshaft assembly (both inlet and exhaust) free of charge (as the bike is still under warranty). The personnel said that the assembly had deformed a bit (minuscule). Now the bike is back to its good condition, relatively quiet and smooth. The personnel said that this issue is being reported by many owners and that he will be escalating it to the Honda head office through the 'official channel'. Before signing off, he advised me to ride like I had during my initial engine break-in in order for the new components to settle.

    ASC: Maansarovar Honda, Velachery, Chennai.
    Cost: Free of charge
    Time taken: 4 days

If anyone is experiencing this issue, please be advised that this is not normal and that you should approach your ASC for resolving it. From my ASC personnel: Harsher vibrations at this rpm range is normal (harmonics at play) but if the same is accompanied by pinging/metallic sound, it has to be attended.

Okay, Is it a DIY ? Are there any black spots do you notice? The default setup isn't very confidence inspiring on NHs. Anyway, Thanks for the reply

Same story, same solution (@17xxx kms, Prakash Honda, Noida, both camshafts and rockers changed along with valve clearance setting), even though mine escalated to the point that sound was evident throughout rev range...
I think if one happens to notice any such noise, it must be brought to the attention of the ASC and dealt with immediately.

Metal Pinging noise as in? I am getting more and more confused bow. Is it like, IF I hear a 'tic tic' sound at 5000rpm, how do I make out whether it's normal or not? Any sound samples anywhere?

Biking is not about how many Km/h you put on your Speedo. It's about how many miles you put on your Odo. Ride Safe, Ride Long!

If you try to listen clearly putting your ear near the side cowl (at idling rpm), you would feel it coming from near the cylinder head and sound will be like that of hammering on metal, albeit very short and peaky, not like the harsh rattling sound we hear above 7 or 8k rpm; which is due to vibrations.

Also, if valve clearance setting was not done at your first service, it is good idea to get it done as soon as you hear a discernible change in engine note. Once it is done, your engine is good for at least another 15 to 20k kms before you'll need to go for readjustment. If anyone plans on getting it checked, get spark plug cleaned and also check for surface finish of camshafts.

                      That's a whopping 12 kays for a 35W setup
Do update us once you have the setup fitted on your ride

Thanks, I think that would be helpful. My valve adjustment wasn't done during first service and now I do feel a change in the engine note since the last ~500kms.

I got it fixed at the svc. There are blackspots but negligible. The light and throw is to my satisfaction in dark.

i do have a metallic sound which the asc here does not take not of. and lately the vibes have increased so much that my hands go numb.
does it also create a metallic rubbing that is metal against metal kind of sound around 5 to 7 k rpm range ?

what valve clearance? no one does that here. i think i need one badly as it is to loud and vibe for me. will also check spark plug.

Yeah, it sounds like that 'tic tic' sound. It is very loud and distinctly stands out of the normal engine note. You can easily identify it as it starts sharply at a certain RPM around 5000 rpm irrespective of what gear is engaged and the load. You can reproduce this even when the bike is in neutral. But the issue that I faced is not experienced at idle rpm. That might be a different issue. At other rpm range, the engine is smooth (for a 250cc single cylinder engine).

Going through the description, I think you too are facing the same issue. Even my ASC didn't take note of it. But I insisted and took him for a test ride. Then I held the rpm at 5000 for him to notice the sound. I repeated this at all gears (including neutral). He was satisfied and agreed that this is abnormal. Yes the vibes get so stronger that my hands used to become numb (and sometimes painful) with just few minutes of driving. So I avoided going beyond 5000 rpm until the issue is resolved. Vibes are present in every perfectly working CBR 250R too but the one which I felt was beyond what I could tolerate. Please insist your ASC to take this seriously. If they still give some lame reason, send a mail to Honda customer care. Also, this is fully covered in warranty, so if your bike is in warranty, you shouldn't be charged even a single paisa.

Also asked me to go to different service station and call and they will help from there.
