Same prob here. Just don't tell them. once I went to my native in kerala from mysore just like that and surprised everyone. For 2 hours I heard from all how dumb and risky my idea was.that's it. but the ride was totally worth it.

      Hi guys,

I recently bought my friend's D200. This has run only 22k Kms and is 2012 model. It rides really well and takes off like nothing I've owned before.

However, yesterday I encountered a strange problem. The speedo console displayed "low battery" and just came to a halt a few Kms after that. Thankfully, one of the ktm svc was close by and I dropped the bike there. The guy tells me the starter coil has gone and the battery is dead. I want opinion of you guys here. :/

      Cheers,

      Karthik

Yea but do tell someone and act responsibly. What if unfortunately you meet with an accident and no one knows where the hell are you. Where will they look for you.
I know parents could be very strict about long rides. But doing Leh without telling anyone is just plain stupid mate.

True. I realize now how dumb the idea was. But hell no I'm not going to leh without telling anyone. But planning for leh though. But I don't think convincing parents would be that hard. Specially if they know how well we ride. But can't say it's safe though. Even if we ride carefully. Don't know how others on the road drive though

Yeh, the stator coil has been known to fail on quite a few bikes, which is turn causes the battery to go flat.
I'd say you get the repair work done in front of you and see that it is in fact the stator coil that is being replaced. Also have the battery charged overnight at the svc.
the stator coil can be checked by measuring the resistance across it pins - refer to one of my earlier post http://www.xbhp.com/talkies/motorcyc...ml#post1136758
            Pin1 - Pin2 : <=1ohm
            Pin1 - Pin3 : <=1ohm
            Pin1 - Ground(negative battery terminal) = infinite

Thanks for your reply. Thankfully the bike is fine now. Cross checked before I went there if they really changed the battery and the coil. I hope the problem doesn't crop up again.

                      • Re: KTM 200 Duke

Hi, i just got my bike delivered last week and its done about 120 kms. Most of it was on the suburban roads with negligible traffic. I'm very confused about the break in procedure.
I also have a P220 which after 5 years and 41k on the odo reaches top speeds of 143+ with good F.E. For the P220 i had pretty much ridden it like it was already run in and i until now i haven't had any problem with the engine as such except for hard gear changes.
For the Duke though im taking it easy most of the times. I accelerate in a linear manner without opening the throttle fully and change gears at around 5K rpm.
The Speeds at which i change gears are :
                        First - 0 to 20
                        Second - 20-30
                        Third- 30- 40
                        Fourth - 40-50
                        Fifth and sixth - 50 +
The max speed i have reached till now is 95 ( Couldnt help myself pretty sure all of you can vouch for that) though for a very short period.

Is this method good for the bike? i always idle it for around 2 mins and keep changing RPMs constantly.
Should i change the engine oil at 200 Kms. I asked the svc and they said its not required.
Also the gear shifts are hard. i.m hoping they'll become smooth after first service.

Please tell me if this break in is good for the bike.
Addtionally, the bike starts only after two to three cranks even after the engine is hot. is this a problem ?
Thank you in advance. help appreciated

please check the first page for break in procedures on the first page of this thread there are links to four break in procedures

Regarding you taking the bike to 95.. Hell yes most of us did that. Need not worry about that. Yes gear shifts will get smoother after first service. Happy riding buddy

                            Hi mate,

if you need some tips on break in, do check my signature, you will find a link towards it. Have tried and tested it on about 5 different bikes, including the duke, just was a 390.

                            Hope this helps.

                            Cheers

What you are following is perfectly ok.. though you can push it a little further a few times. The duke doesn't like a baby sitter
keep it under 7500rpm most of the time..and go up gradually. The duke 200 touches 100kmph at exactly 7500 rpm in 6th gear
When you have the oil change at first service, I would suggest you use only motul 7100 (10w50 or 20w50)... stay away from that bajaj oil in case you are asked to use it.

So any of you guys know where can i buy and fix a genuine michelin pilot street radial 150/60 in chennai?... got 16.2k on the odo and the feel of the present rear tyres on breaking is non-existant.Front will last a thousand more i believe....Man around 20k kilometers im looking at a whole barrage of parts changes tyres-sprocket set and may be the clutch plate too...
off topic.. a bittersweet experience recently on my duke... was doin chennai-hyd where the bike decided to stop changing gears at exactly halfway through(blame me, the gear lever was feeling loose and out of place for the previous fortnight too lazy to take it to the svc) ... was stuck on the sixth gear, stopped and was cursing myself.... and then voila the bike pulls like a bull even on sixth, starts from standstill at 6th damn i was impressed(i know i burnt through the clutch plate doing this but it got me out of a tough situation)... once there was a very steep uphill climb with slow trucks in the front and back i thought this is it.... time to get down and push the bike ...but no the bike just pulls and pulls *grin**grin*...well anyway it got me safely to hyderabad where i changed the gear shaft lever for 500 bucks at the svc ...even after 1yr of owning it the bike continues to impress me
