  • Re: Suzuki GS150R

Experts need help from you all. I bought my GS150R in Feb 2012 and till now did only 8000 KM. I was out of country from the Apr 2012 and hence didn't use the bike much. Now that Iam back, I am using my bike daily. In the first two years, all the service were done and now the bike is in very good shape. However I have the following issues. Please guide me

    1. Hard gear shift. While up shifting the hardness is 1x but while downshifting its 3x. This makes me very uncomfortable while driving in thick traffic
    2. Since I use my bike in thick Chennai city traffic everyday, the engine gets very hot. Any suggestion towards a better engine oil? I have being using the oil from SVC and wanted to go for synthetic oil (just want to try for better result)
    3. Stock headlight is very poor. Please suggest a good one.

I will visit the SVC for general service by next week. Please suggest me what instruction should I give them to sort out above issues. Thanks

If you are done with warranty period, please feel free to upgrade to 55/60 headlamps. Yu need to do a dc conversion. You may refer to detailed diy instructions elsewhere in this thread.

Engine oil shell ax7 semi synth is good

          2. Lack of air flow through the cooling fins at stop-and-go traffic is the main cause of the heat you experience. Using any oil, whether mineral or synthetic, will not make any difference.
Check the condition of the spark plug and clean it and adjust its gap or replace it. Make sure that the oil filled is not thicker and the quantity is not less or more than required.
          3. Convert the bike to full DC as Venkan said.

I don't remember, i found it while searching for some other thing. It was 3-4 months ago. It should be still there.

I have never seen/heard about solving gasket leak by re-tightening the bolts. Are you sure about this?. The service center technician said leak is due to the corrosion of some coating on the gasket.

              Help !

The 2 Allen bolts connecting the exhaust pipe to the engine head are rusting - very badly. Should I replace them at SVC or can I spray something like Zorrik/WD40 on them regularly? (am not sure of this because that part gets real hot and WD40 is inflammable?). Anyway most motorcycles I have seen have these two bolts corroded pretty bad.

Also, Which is better for loosening the sprocket drum nut - ring vs socket spanner? This nut looks flimsy and requires greater force to lose/tight than the axle nut. In general, is it good to use a socket set whenever possible than ring spanner? Any easy way to increase torque/reduce effort - can I use an extension bar/pipe for the same or will it strip the bolt?

                Try adjusting the clutch play.

I uses Castrol Power 1 and it is good. There might be so many duplicates out there. Try buying from an authorized retailer.

                3. Stock headlight is very poor. Please suggest a good one.

I know that. I don't know any easy/cheap solution but changing to white light may help. My friend did it in his discover and it seemed better.

I will visit the SVC for general service by next week. Please suggest me what instruction should I give them to sort out above issues. Thanks
Try to do it by yourself before going to SVC.

Wet it with some Kerosene/Diesel/Oil or paint it with high temperature paint after doing some proper cleaning.

I did't understand what you are trying to loose/remove. In the case of spanners try using both ring and socket both are equally good. Using extension bar usually won't strip the bolt, unless you are rotating in the proper direction (Clockwise for tightening and anticlockwise for loosing) and position (perpendicular). Don't use extension bar/pipe to tighten the bolts because it will over tighten it and may cut the threads.

Same case here, although I'm at the very bottom when it comes to motorcycle maintenance(lazy as sloth). I'm planning to get a new pair and use grease/oil coat from day 1.

I always prefer ring spanners over sockets. I believe sockets are used in places where ring spanners can't reach/play well; open spanners where ring spanners can't(like mirror nut).

That said, I bought a Ratchet(Taparia for ₹ 600/-) with goes with sockets, it considerably reduces nuts/bolts loosening/tightening time.

Some bolts/nuts have reverse direction, clockwise for loosening(anti-clockwise for tightening); like the RHS mirror base. Are there any other nuts/bolts on the GS150R that fall into this category? Coz, I often end up in dilemma when a nut/bolt is too tight.

Once I lost threads on chain cover bolts using a ring spanner. Some bolts/nuts are deliberately designed that way I suppose; which can be replaced easily.

Head gasket looks like a metal(Aluminum perhaps) sheet. What's the name of the one that comes at the base of the cylinder(marked with red rectangle)?

                  We've come across:
                  1. Magneto Cover gasket
                  2. Flywheel Gasket
                  3. Head Gasket

Also, I gathered you recently opened GS's Mikuni BS26 Carb for cleaning. Please share your thoughts on it for all DIY fans. Couple of pictures will be of great help though. I've noticed uneven throttle response in first 1/5 throttle below 3k RPM.

The light from the headlight is not focusing on the road due to the design of the bulb and reflector due to some regulations is the problem; not the insufficiency of the light from a 35 watts bulb. Actually a 55/60 watts bulb in the stock headlight assembly is not enough to illuminate the city road where there are street lights.
In DC conversion, the stator coil is rewound with thicker wire for more current and the stock half wave rectifier is replaced with full wave one. You can do this conversion yourself and, in my experience, it is safe as I have done it about 3 years ago and have covered at least 25,000 kms.
The other option is a projector headlight.
I am using Castrol 15W-40 SS oil for about 37,000 kms in my bike.

GIXXER 150 is heard to be launched in August this year and it ‘seems’ to be a mono shock with a different engine. Actually nobody or at least none of the dealers knows what it will be.
The 250 cc bike the dealer mentioned is Inasuma. It is already in our market. I have no idea about that 160 cc bike.

I like the spread of low beam to be honest. It's same(almost same) in Access125 too.
I've brought dipper(lowbeam) so low that I ride with high beam on roads. I switch to low-beam for speeds less than 30 km/h and I get nice light spread. I think high beam puts some extra load on engine; I can feel the difference during switching. Am I imagining it?

Carburetor maintenance is easy, but you should be very careful with the tiny parts. You might also want to persuade the screws to come out, so good pair of screw drivers, a small chisel and hammer is must if you want to completely dismantle the carb. Dismantling carburetor entirely is not recommended by SVC/suzuki, because it is outsourced by the company.
One interesting fact that i found while dismantling the carburetor is that the diaphragm was not installed properly. It was no in its correct slot, so i put it back correctly.

I made my share of mistakes too. I missed the o-ring on the carburetor flange, now i have made ordered for a new one from suzuki. Don't know if the will send one.

I don't have a proper camera, so won't be able to post pictures of it.

If you have any uneven throttle response, try cleaning the spark plug and adjusting the gap first. Did you replace the spark plug at 8000 KM?.

Whatever regulations they are following, oncoming traffic is always showing dim and bright signal at me even at low beam even though i cannot see a single thing on the road.

Is Suzuki launching two different GIXXERs?
GIXER is 160 cc like Yamaha FZ.

I will try that. Seems good idea.
Never found any difference in engine performance at high beam.
