  • I have ridden the GS for 400km and done with the first service. But i have some querys.

    1) Whenever i shift gear from 1st to 2nd at 2-3k rpm i get a tak tak sound, but when i shift ar 4-5k rpm their is no sound why is it so.

    2) How to ride a bike at wht gear when you drive it uphill.Since when i drive on 2nd gear i feel less power.

    3) The bike feels like having less pick up at 2nd gear.

    4) At 2nd or 1st gear when i low down the speed through the throttle i feel a jerk why is it so.

      1. no idea, i haven't noticed it.

      2. i ride in 5th gear at 50-55 if possible, otherwise keep rpm at 4-5 in whichever gear i'm riding. (on flyovers, not uphill exactly )

3.i guess you are shifting too early. ride upto 15-18 in 1st gear, then shift.

      4. its called engine braking.

Are you sure it is called engine breaking.Since when i am on 2nd gear @ 18km/hr speed and then when i unthrottle it gives jerk.Any good way to reduce speed then which you can suggest, when on low speed.

Yup, its normal in all bikes. when you leave the throttle(without holding clutch) engine braking will occur.(more at higher rpm)
This is more noticable in 1st gear, and 2nd gear, lesser in 4,5,6.
For 1st and 2nd gear, i usually hold the clutch when i'm leaving the throttle. (keeps the bike free from jerks, loud sound etc.)
then use brakes normally to slow down.

alternatively, if you practice you may be able to use engine braking effectively to slow down(read it somewhere), i tried but it never worked smoothly in my case, so i use clutch

Yes mate that is engine braking, and as Falcon explained it is in all bikes and more felt in 1, 2 gears.

The jerk actually feels good and I use it when I have to slow down for the zillion speed breakers in our roads.

From your description I can assume the jerk you are feeling is much more, it is down to your driving style.

            1. The jerk is visible more when you are riding in 1/2 gear at 4+ RPM, and then leave the throtle fully, at one go.
            2. The engine breaking will be good if it is used gradually and with proper co ordination with the clutch.
            3. If you are shifting down, you need to release ur clutch a bit more slowly to minimise the jerk. You don't need to hold the clutch while shifting down, just release it gradually and feel the engine braking slow you down.

It's not an issue to worry about, soon you will master it.

            • Thanks for making me clear on the concept of engine breaking. From now on when i am about to slow down on 1st or 2nd gear i will pull the clutch.

But I thought we should not apply the clutch every time you release the accelerator because it might damage clutch plate... So the best thing to do is just release the accelerator & apply the clutch only when you slow down considerably & hence have to change (reduce) gear... Please correct me if I am wrong...

What you are saying is correct for higher gears (above 2).
Sanjukoli's issue was regarding 1/2 gears at higher RPM, where the engine braking will be more, when you let go of the accelaraor.

To avoid that jerk when riding in 1st/2nd gears, its ok to use clutch slightly(not fully). Once you become familiar with engine braking the use of clutch will automatically decrease.

To avoid that jerk during downshifting to 1st/2nd gears, you need to let go of the clutch gradually, not at one go.

                  • @Augustine:

Whats up mate, no posts for a pretty long time? Enjoying hols?

I am going to test drive GS this saturday at Pallavaram. I am having some queries regarding it

                    1. Do they allow to go for a long 5+ KM test drive?
                    2. Since the GST road is pretty well laid out, I want to take a detour somewhere and test drive it on pretty average roads, they do allow that right?
                    3. Did you get any offer from them?
                    4. How long is the waiting period?
                    5. How long did they take to register the bike?
                    6. Anyway to know if the bike is from the new lot?
                    7. Any tips from your side?

Sorry for the long long list.

                      • Hi everyone,

I am posting here in this thread after a very long time. Before I can come out of my first accident, I had my second one. This time it was a boy in bicycle. Suddenly he came in front of my bike from nowhere. Applied sudden and hard brakes (I was at around 40kmph). Bike skidded. I fell on the left side. My bike moved away from me towards the right. A lorry ran over my GS front side. It was on sep 5,2009

                        Damages:

                        1) I had a broken left clavicle. My hand was on a belt for a month. Recovering slowly

                        2) My GS - Headlight, alloy, fork etc etc - The lorry ran over my front parts

I am recovering slowly. Got my bike yesterday. 20k for the damages. Expecting the insurance

very much confused. many are asking me to sell the bike as i had accident for the 2nd time. But my heart is saying to hold on to my baby

Gonna keep myself cool with her until i recover completely.

It was like hell for me for the past 3 months without my bike.

                        I love GS

Really sad to hear about your accident. Don't worry about the bike, feel lucky that the lorry didn't run over you!
Accidents are part&parcel of life. Cheer yourself up&if you feel there is something wrong with the bike, get a puja done or something to ward off the evil eyes, before deciding to sell it off.

Bad news. Wish you a speedy recovery. We all at the xBhp would like to see you soon at the forum fit and fine. Regarding the bike, my vote would be to get rid of the bike and get a new one or a 4 wheeler. If you like the GS so much go ahead and trade the old one for a new GS. The new batch of bikes are known to be rid of many earlier niggles.

I know people are being superstitious and asking you to sell off the bike... Instead just get the bike to a temple and thank god for saving your life ( from the truck) and get your baby also blessed so that it does not encounter any such incidents again....

Accidents are a part and parcel of life.... you never know when and what is waiting for you.... Just enjoy your riding and be as safe as you can and wear proper protective gear whereever you go...

                                Wishing you a speeeeeeeeedy recovery......
