so i decided to test after my 8th service..from my home to office it is 17 kms one side.. so i use the 6th gear continuously since am using highway..but i got only 50 mileage.. Please tell me should i drive in 50-55 speed or drive upto 65??
If you drive the bike in a constant 55-60 kmh speed, you will get more than 70 kml; I am sure and am ready to prove it. I mean not only a test ride but a long ride of 100-150 kms or more.
I have covered 4624 kms with 71 liters of fuel and I hope that I can cover another 50 kms before hitting the reserve. Mine is a planned long distance R to R mileage check and I am now waiting to reach the reserve level to finish it and fill the tank full again.
This ride includes short trips of 2 kms to long ones of 250 kms, bumper to bumper city drives to highway drives, sometimes solo and the other times with pillion rider.
Carry over periodic maintenance of oiling, greasing etc. etc. and try to keep a constant speed of 60-65 kmh. Shift to higher gears at the earliest possible, remain in high gear as long as possible and down shift at the latest. Avoid unnecessary usage of clutch and brake and try to move in a constant speed. Keep the tank full to reduce loss of fuel due to evaporation. This will give you better mileage.

The GS headlight illuminates a larger area than many other bikes but in Indian conditions, a more focused light is preferable mainly because our straying dogs, cats, cattle and cattle like pedestrians are not given adequate traffic lessons. The next disaster is the morning walkers wearing dark or black dress.
A change to 55-60 watt bulb may give slight increase in light, but not up to the needed, desired or expected level unless the supply current is increased.
But, if you decide to change the bulb, Night Breaker is better than most of the others.

@vishnukmd:bro thank you so much for your very good replies..and one more doubt...you said to shift to top gear at earliest possible(6th gear=30km/hr),but some say that it puts a lot of stress on the engine. . . .and is not good for the piston!please tell your opinion broBiking is in my Blood!!

hey there,, just wanted to ask u does ur 55 w bulb glow to its full extent at around 4500 - 6000 rpm only?? Because our stock bulb can achieve its full glow at around 2500 rpm ....Originally posted by vishnukmd View PostThe reflector is OK.
I have used the bulb for hours in the night without any problem. But I am doubtful about its result. Please note that the surrounding was completly dark - without any other light - when the photo was taken. Usual travelling condition is different.Yamaha R15 V1 2011

Higher gears provide better mileage; that is all I know about it. I do shift to the 6th gear at 30-32 kmh speed in normal plain roads and drive without any engine snatching or knocking. I am doing it for the last 10-11 years; previously with my Suzuki Fiero and now with my GS. My fiero which has covered more than 1.25 lakh kms is in excellent condition, without any engine or other problems.
Others have their own opinions. Let us wait for it.

At the time of shift to 6th gear what tachometer shows?
According to me the right speed to shift to top gear is 40-50.

I am using Nighbreaker from last 3 months, and my daily return journey from office is in the night only. definitely NB is better than other bulbs, and it doesn't burn the default reflectors too...You can go for it without much doubt. only thing is connect two pilot lamps with DC, so that those 10 watts from AC is rerouted to the headlight. all the best.Originally posted by WayofLife View PostHi Vishnu,
Nice to see those powerful lamps. Hope you are not one of those High Beam Hangouts, riding always on high beams!! Btw, can you kindly post a pic of the lights from the front(facing the lamps). I see a very bright zone to the immediate left and right of the bike. So how is your reflector coping up with the heat of 55W when it is designed to take only 35W?sigpic

̉ i have a projector setup made by myself using p220's low projector and high ellipsodial 55w lamps in a gs dome and i've been experimenting with this setup since the first time gs was introduced...(maybe u were just dreaming of owning a gs at that time...hehe ) and i found that the 55w bulb glows to its full only at 5000-6000 rpm unlike our stock bulb which glows to its full at aroung 2000 rpm... That was the point i was trying to tell but i think u need a little more practise in understanding things and taking things more positively...afterall everyone knows a dog's tail can never be straightened...hehe..best of luck mr.vishnukmd and now i think i owe an explanation from u on this...if u still are a human or else its ok u'll reach to my and everyone else's expectations...u know its really dangerous to have partial knowledge like u who just knows a heck about bikes but feel like u r the best engineer who knows everything...land down back to earth mate dont fly too high... The pilot lamps are connected to a separate tap in the rr unit. So, by removing it, we cannot reduce the load in the tap for headlight. That means, removing the load of pilot lamps will not increase the current in the other tap to headlight as both are not connected to the same supply source in the rr unit.
We can replace the stock bulb without removing the pilot lamps. The output will be same.
(As you know, all the bulbs are working in DC)Last edited by vishnukmd; 03-02-2011, 11:40 PM.
