  • Re: Bajaj Dominar 400 Ownership Experience Thread

    Greetings riders,

Just did first service today. Couple of points to mention.

    1. During initial 200Km, I saw the engine oil level was low, so topped it up myself to the mark.
    2. Initially there was a lot of vibes, but things are calming down day by day.
    3. Was riding on the highway today itself, the display showed dynamic average of 42 kmpl at 6th gear at 73kmph. However, average stays at 35 kmpl for me.
    4. Informed the SVC mechanic about bike pulling to the right, he admitted that all the new models have this problem. He also added Bajaj has been notified of the same, until Bajaj says something about it, nothing can be done.
    5. My coolant level was low, the mechanic topped it up free of charge as he had another open bottle with him. The bottle costs around 210 I guess. He said I need not worry about coolant level till 20K km.
    6. One tip the mechanic gave me, to clean the lower part after the fork seal regularly, as the area will collect dirt and hence the seal will be prone to failure.
    7. Installed clear windshield from carbonracing, looks cool. However, I still feel a lot of air on my face.

    Warm regards,
    Dipanjan

I also wanted to do the same, but one well wisher of mine said that it will restrict the off roading capabilities of the bike. Can you comment on the same?

The ground clearance does reduce by about 15 mm but nothing to worry about. People have done off roads on kawasakis which have even lower ground clearances. Also the new dominar doesn't have the cat con as an underbelly unit so that is a plus point and may help to retract the stand even more upward. Also I don't know if the current stand might fit the newer dominar so just wait.

I went to get the 'high security' number plate fixed on my new Dominar 2019 today, at the Khivraj Bajaj (Kasturba road). And since I was there, decided to avail of one of the free bi-monthly washes there. All was well and good when I gave the bike for a wash. When I got it back though, almost after an hour, the brakes had lost their bite completely. Not only that, the front brakes had started making koooo koooo sound on hard application. Previously even a slight tap on the front brake would immediately bite and get the bike to stop. Now even a very hard pull doesn't stop the bike well, and instead makes that irritating sound you would hear from an age old motorcycle.

All this on a new dominar, which was all fine before I gave it for that effing free wash. Now the mirrors have lost their adjustment (who asked them to touch the mirrors, is beyond me!), and the brakes have lost their bite. In a mere free wash!

And coincidentally, there was another new dominar owner there who was complaining about this very same brakes issue after his first service. All they did, in my case case, and mostly in his case as well, was probably to just pressure-wash it again around the rotors!

Did anyone else face such issue before? What could be the possible cause? and now that the damage is done, how can I get the initial bite back, any suggestions? I am frustrated big time since I had really liked the bite the brakes had.

One of my friends had the same problem in his Hornet. The mechanic had mistakenly put some oil on the disc. I think yours is a similar case, you need to get that oil off the disc. I am no expert in this but, I think you need to rub the lubricating layer off the disc manually. Wait for others opinions too.

          Was watching this youtube video

The console shown at 11:00 was not what I see on my Domi. Is that showing a distance to empty meter or what?

Happened to me when I gave my ZMA for a so called 'TEFFLON' coating at the SVC.

Buggers waxed my brake rotor, to get that extra shine maybe!

To restore bite, take the caliper off and scrub the brake pads with some sandpaper, then using detergent and dish scrub, generously scrub the rotor and clean it thoroughly.

Or if you're lazy you could drag and overheat the pads though not recommended as it takes quite a bit of dragging to get back the initial bite.

Isnt this normal? I mean, whenever i give my Bike to the SVC, the brakes, both front and back usually dont function properly for close to 20-30km (including that weird sound koooon sound when applying the front brakes) and when i get the bike washed (I never get it washed in the SVC), brakes dont work properly for close to 5-8kms. Post that, it works fine.

No it is not normal. I have never faced this till now. They are supposed to wash the disc only using water and not oil. My bike's brakes always work whenever I take them out of svc.

Had similar experience on my Apache 180. After taking the bike from service, I was on my way to the office speeding at about 50-60 Kmph and suddenly when I noticed a speed breaker, and I hit both front and back brakes, to my surprise, the break pads are slipping on the disk with squeaking noise and took very long distance to decelerate, thankfully no vehicle is before me. Then I realized the service men had indeed cleaned both front and rear discs with oil(along with the whole bike) . I couldn't clean since I don't have any cloth with me. So continued to my office at slower speeds and occasionally hit the breaks on purpose, after few Kms the issue is resolved.

                      Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if there are any active dominar owner's club in Bangalore that I can join. Found a few on facebook that seem to be inactive for a long time. There are some links in this forum that don't seem to work as well. Would really appreciate any inputs on this.

                          1. Seat cover?

                          Thanks a lot.
                          Congrats on the new ride!

You should get the registration number within 3 days (Max). I got mine the next day. RC will come within 45days to your address. If it doesn't, then take your original documents and go to the RTO. They'll hand it over to you.

Tyre weights are standard. Don't worry.

I haven't seen many adding seat covers to the Domi. There is no proviosn to put a helmet lock too. I used to put the lock cable around thr handlebar, but felt it'll get stuck if I would need to take a sudden right or left, hence have removed it. I carry my helmet everywhere I go :-)

As part of the wash, they apply polish to the whole bike, including the disc. And that makes it more slippery due to which the brakes don't have the bite immediate. It takes time for the polish to wear off and get it to Normal. Solution? Ask them not to apply polish on the disc rotors. Simple.

I asked them not to apply it after my 3rd service and the brakes weren't that bad at all. The brakepads could have be slightly soaked as well reducing it's bite, but it'll not be as bad due to application of the polish.

Talking about the "high security" number plate, I have been getting calls from my dealer to get it fixed. They tell me my RC will be held at the RTO if I don't get it fixed. Sounds very hilarious though. I'm based at Chennai. Jai Bajaj, Tambaram is my dealer. Any thoughts on this, fellow riders?
