  • TVS apache 180 problem

Hello i am having a 2011 tvs apache 180 model, done around 13000 kms only .
I am having some serious issues with my bike. Firstly when accelerating, it doesnt accelerate easily to speeds, and at some point (7000-7500 rpm) when i rest the throttle, the tachometer needle varies too much, it just jumps from 6000 - 7000 back and forth WTH ! Also the bike sounds like it has a different exhaust note.

Just went to SVC and they say the bike is good. I am a novice in bikes thing so help me plz . Need to know whats wrong with my bike ASAP.

going to change the stock FRONT tyre tom! the stock size is 90/90 17" but is it okay if i use the r15v2 front tyre which is 90/80 17" ?? will it make any difference? one more thing, michelin pilot sporty or mrf zapper fy1? which is better in terms of grip and durability? and changing front tyre alone wont cause any problems right? coz the rear will remain stock tvs tyres.

Hi Abishek.. you had PM'd me also I guess.. sorry, forgot to reply

If you can find R15V2 tyre, just go for it! It is one of the best out there. Michelin Pilot sporty is marginally better than stock TVS, nothing to brag about

And I would also recommend you to change the rear tyre as well, if not now, sometime soon. Otherwise you wont be able to appreciate the extra grip provided by the front while cornering since the rear cannot offer similar grip levels & you wont lean so much But the grippy front will help you with braking! Wheel wont lock up as easily as before.

Guys, I took my bike to the SVC about the chain sound issue. At first they said the sprocket is worn and it is because of misaligned chain and sprocket. So I guess I know the culprit.

They told me it will be Rs. 1250 for the set and then another 250 towards labor charge. They say they have to replace the whole set. Then I asked them till when or for how many kms I can run like this as I didn't have the money then. They said current set will run for many kms more, but I will have to bear with the sound and there might be decrease in FE.

Then I asked them if I can change the sprocket only and they say the sprocket is fine, but the chain is worn on edges. And I asked them if the chain can be bought separate. That guy gave me two names, Rolland and Diamond. They say they get these companies and they are good

What's your opinion? Should I change the whole set when both the sprockets are fine, at least they say so.

            Its actually Rolon not Rolland

Rolon is the OEM chain/sprocket manufacturer for most Indian companies incl TVS and incl RTR as well! If you check your current chain, you can see Rolon written on the chain links.
I bought Rolon chain/sprocket set for my bike when buying new one, which was 200/- lesser than TVS spare, though both are exactly the same!

And like they said, it is always advisable to change the entire set. What is the ODO reading? The usual change interval is around 15k-20k kms, maybe more if maintained well. This will indicate if the sprockets are really fine or not..

Am not sure about the exact ODO reading, but its a bit under 9k. As they said the chain was misaligned I guess I should look for other options than the TVS SVCs.

Thanks for the advice Adarsh i went to JC road today and got the pilot sporty upfront!! first i searched for the zapper fy1 but after asking in close to 6 places, i gave up as none of them have it and some dont even know that such a tyre exists. i guess yamaha showroom is the right place to go. The guy at the place where i got the pilot sporty told me not to go for the 90/80 of the r15v2 as the side walls will be 10mm smaller than the stock size and it might give a bumpy ride! dont know how far that is true.
anyway, i got the pilot sporty for rs 1700 and he did not take anything for fitting.
and for the rear tyre, what difference does a 120 section make with regard to fuel economy and road grip? how has ur experience been?

EDIT: question for everyone : i have been riding with tappet noise for the past 1000 odd km. I have run 3k on the odo. during second service i told them to adjust it but they did not do it. my local mech told me that upto 5000km the svc doesnt touch the engine parts as it has to set, hence the loose tappets were not adjusted etc. now i have the required tools for a DIY on tappet adjustment so should i do it now or should i run with tappet noise till i reach 5k on the odo??

Thx very much for replying sir, but i think you didnt get what i said earlier. Lemme explain a little bit more.

                      1) I warm my bike up for 2-5 mins approx, when i ride it for 400 meters till then the bike sounds good, after sometime (1-2 minutes of ride) the bike starts sounding a little like a doodhwala bike. (raajdoot ?) something is not right here , i am sure.

                      2) When i position my throttle to 7K Rpm, instead of resting at 7000 rpm, the RPM needle wobbles (not the bike xD ) greatly from 7000, comes to 6000 then goes back to 7000, doesnt happens every time but happens frequently.

Your carb tappets must be adjusted,,,a better tuning can solve the problem,go the SVC they will adjust the carb.

I think I faced similar issue like this.

For me, the bike would be fine for around 5 mins after starting (cold engine) and then the sound would change as if it has K&N air filter And the bike would rattle more than usual.

The culprit is the engine foundation bolts being loose. Just get it tightened and I am sure this issue will be solved. I wonder how did the SVC guys say it was fine!!

This is most probably due to dirty air filter. Just see if it has become black. You can try to clean it yourself (There is a DIY thread in xbhp, please search ) or you can get a new air filter which should cost around 120.

                                Hey guys,

I think my rear shock absorbers has come to its end and I need to change it. When asked about the original the SVC guy told its around 4k which I feel is too much. Any other option available or do we have to go with the original shock absorbers? Please share any suggestions on this.
