I'm serious about the reserve knob though. Having actually seen people getting stuck because of that (people running in reserve mode without ever turning it), one should make it a habit before setting out daily. When you park your bike, make sure it's horizontal - off position, when you're starting off, ensure it's in the on position, that way, it becomes habit.
Speaking of habits,
I do a pre-check this way,
FIRST off all, raise the side stand, even if you park on the main stand, ensure the side stand is raised.
Check the choke - ensure it's off (or ensure it's on, if it's a cold start in the morning),
Check brake
Check to see if headlight is OFF (since it's fairly possible to blow a fuse when you touch the starter button when the lights are on).
Turn fuel knob to ON
Check if mirrors are properly aligned
A slight L and R check on the tyres while seated to make sure the air pressure is OK
When starting cold, half press the choke lever, and on the engine being started, hold it for a few seconds till proper idling is reached.
All this hardly takes a few seconds when setting out, and it becomes instinctive. I'm sure many of us do it by default, but if not, it's good to put into practice.

(yeah yeah I know we can carry extra fuel
