  • Re: Karizma/Karizma R

Me and Nithin happened to check the new ZMR and ZMA today evening. No test riding done, but we observed few interesting things.

    1. The seats are super soft. Great for comfortable touring.
    2. The riding posture of ZMA is a little sportier now, just like ZMR.
    3. The chain is O ring, and the most interesting thing is that it has a link. Don't know it can be opened, but it just has a link similar to masterlock.

    4. And Nithin found the most shocking, at the same time very interesting thing. The ZMR and ZMA both have same panels, except console and the surrounding black panel. You just remove the side bottom panels of ZMR, and viola, you get ZMA look. And add the side bottom panels of ZMR to ZMA and you get ZMR. Those who are cribbing about ZMA looks, they can now add the ZMRs bottom panels and make it look like ZMR.

    5. The bikes have good road presence, not as bad looking as in pics.
    6. The black plastic linings surrounding the Karizma console seems to be designed haphazardly. There is no rubber lining and it would sure rattle a lot. On the other hand, ZMR console gelled much better.
    7. Now, there is no need to remove the bottom panel to reach spark plug in ZMR. It has good gap in the panel to reach the spark plug area.

One known mechanic told me that ZMR has excellent pickup and it seems he liked it a lot. With 20 bhp power, I guess ZMR is worth the money. It would be a great tourer. You can remove the side bottom panels and make it look like ZMA (if you don't like the bulk).

    • Help with used karizma bought recently.

Hi everyone this is Pravas, Just got a used karizma R [9000 Km's on the Odometer] . Would like few help on the initial problems that I faced.

To begin I've a little knowledge on bikes and got it from a used reseller shop. Before the test ride, bike was fueled by Rs 10 worth of petrol hanging through an external container. Bike started easily but whenever it was given a little raise on the accelerator it used to stop. Finally the mechanic cleaned the spark plug and did something with the spanner, it was fine then. We filled 2 litres of petrol and off towards home. We were halfway through the journey and suddenly the bike had the same problem mentioned earlier. We pushed the bike and fortunately found a mechanic around 9:40pm. Suddenly the bike started working on its own, its not that I didn't try all the way pushing it. What could've gone wrong?

Then there are two other small problems, Low beam which does not work and one of the tail light does not work. Both I guess will be fixed by changing the bulb.

Now my main concern is to know how well the engine is. NO complaints with torque but the bike screams and is not smooth above 60kmph. I would like to have a mechanic in Chennai who could spend some quality time on bike and have a look at it.

I need to change Oil and Battery so any suggestions on that would be great help. Any additional tips on maintaining the bike? How much will it cost for an overall service that covers everything?

Hope to hear from you guys.

      Thanks All.

Am I the only onw who likes the new zmrs side profile?

Thats awsome if panels can be swapped
I think they are trying to make a niche market for those tourers who like the reliability and features
I hear from my dealer bandhu hero will sell touring accessories as well, tank bags and what not.
Soft seats are good! (Try sitting on an r15s v2 seat and you will know why soft seats are appreciated:P)
No tvs tyres from factory! 200Ns , apache, p220 all Come with these!
Hopefully they put a damm tall 6th gear for the tourers...... (I know they didn't but my heart hopes they did)
Those guys wo like touring on an enfield, give em a zma/zmr for a tour and then see their happy faces

You bought the bike even without seeing it or taking a (proper) test ride, isn't it? Seeing the external bottle for petrol should have risen an alarm if nothing else.
Anyways, in the meanwhile folk answer your queries, search this thread for all your solutions. Read through it if you can spare time and trust me you'll be benefited.

Thanks for merging the thread and I'll go through this entirely if possible. The external bottle was there to keep the fuel tank unused. We saw 6 Karizma R's [all priced similarly] out of which this seemed fine.

If you have some knowledge, why didn't you take a trustworthy mechanic along? He might have pinpointed some problems/issues that you couldn't. If the bike wasn't responding to the throttle, you should have stopped the purchase then.
                      Anyway,
                      The issues/solutions could be
                      1) Old petrol deposits clogging the carb (have the carb cleaned thoroughly).
                      2) Ensure the tank is cleaned and has no rust in it.
                      3) Replace the Air Filter
                      4) Replace the Spark Plug (preferably with G Power)
                      5) Change oil
                      6) Battery levels/top up if the battery isn't an SMF type.
                      7) Check chain/sprockets for wear and lubricate if necessary
                      8) Check for tappet noise/Timing chain noise and adjust if required.
                      9) Replace Throttle cables A+B and the Clutch Cable
                      10) Since your bulb is fused, replace it with a new one, including the tail light bulb. Replace BOTH tail light bulbs at the same time.
                      11) Check brake pads and brake fluid, drain old fluid and top up with DOT4 instead of DOT3.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

Fine in what sense? If the engine screams and is harsh above 60 and you still need a mechanic to find out what the issue is! Chennai has many good mechanics and I think you'll be able to get the bike running in good condition if there's nothing wrong with the engine. Hopefully it's just that the mounting bolts are loose and making it sound harsher than necessary. If there's any smoke coming out the exhaust, you might want to give the bike back.

                            Thanks in advance, cheers.
