        • Smoke coming out from the Engine | Karizma

          Hi All,

I Ride my Karizma ZMA yesterday for a trip of 60+ km (after long time ), After riding about 40-50 km , I noticed fumes coming out from the engine.
This is the first time I have noticed this in my ZMA, though in past I have done ride of 300+ km in single day.

Fumes / smoke was coming through the space in between bike handle and the console.I even felt the burning smell coming out from the engine side.
After giving beak of 15-20 minutes, issues got settle (was riding with a speed of 70-80 km/h).

I am not sure what was the issue behind this, few of the things coming to my mind are
          1. oil leak burning smoke

Need you help to understand the issue, so as I should be aware of the possible issues before handing over the bike to service center guys.

Did it smell like oil burning? If so it maybe an oil seal. Did it smell like wires burning? If so it might be the coil and/or coil wires.
And its highly unlikely that smoke from the engine would climb through the space between the handlebar and the console. So it could be an electric short in the fairing instead. The oil maybe a coincidence.

It was more like wires burning.. kinda of plastic burning...Definitely it was not oil burning smell.
I was also confused after looking at the smoke coming through the space between the handlebar and the console.

Umeshawasthi, did you check your electricals? Operate all switches to see if all works good. Suspecting some short but in ZMA as we need to spend time to look beneath the fairing.

Less likely to be a short but more likely to be a wire that has been stretched a bit. A few strands in the wire tend to break while most of it is still whole. Leads to wire sheath burning off. Its a very rare case but its the only explanation for the electricals working despite the smoke.

Umeshawasthi, before you drop your bike to service, inspect the area with a flashlight to find anything abnormal. If at all, post your pics here so seniors can give you possible explanation, setting aside our speculations.

That was the first thing I did after that incidence and everything was working fine..I checked everything (headlight, indicator , start etc.)
Will try to look beneath the fairing..

I want to get some information beforehand as I do not have 100% faith with Hero service center... I know what kind of service they provide

Will try to inspect it a little more..I tried it but have not fund anything abnormal, will try to see in more details

This should be the order in which you should check:
                          1. battery - if you do not know how to (how to has been mentioned in prev post), then simply take it to a battery guy.
                          2. relay - again, if you thumb the starter and can hear a click then the relay is probably working fine.
                          3. if the clicking is not there, then it could be either the relay or the starter switch itself. In this case you can short the terminals of the relay (be careful, a spark or two might occur). If the relay clicks when you short the terminals then the started switch is bad.. if it doesnt click then the relay is bad.
                          4. last thing to touch would be the actual starter motor itself..and in most cases its the carbon brushes that might need replacement.. as detailed by sriram

btw, sriram did you replace just the brushes or the entire assy ?
Iv got the battery checked and its perfect.

As explained relay is not at fault.

So starter motor is culprit. Iv been trying for carbon brushes since a week but to no wain. I would be thankful if someone can help me.

where do you live in hyderabad ? am sure you can source the carbon brushes at ranigunj/ramkote or the entire plate unit as sriram mentioned earlier.. its pretty cheap.
if you are around ameerpet/yousufguda, then there is a shop at yousufguda checkpost (opposite the BP petrol bunk).. its a big shop and he usually stocks most spares.

I don't think hero sells oem carbon brushes. You have to make do with a local variety. I've heard of 'SWISS' brand which are decent quality, if not just pick up whatever is available.
Regarding compatibility with other bike parts, I do not know - and i do not know if other manufacturers supply oem carbon brushes. I only know hero and honda both dont seem to be selling just the brushes, they ask you to replace the entire motor unit.
So pick up whatever is available and am sure they would hold up for at least a few months if not for years. Later on you can hunt for 'better' quality ones.
