Year and a bit more ago, i too had to change my rear tyre @ 17k kms. At that time it had cost me Rs.1600. Very honest and reasonably priced. I didnt do much hunting around. Actually the word then, around was that the tyres were out of stock, some prob at the factory, so is in the process of shipping etc. This worried me, that now the dealers would definitely demand a pound of flesh for a new trye plus it was monsoon, and i had planned to head for nashik soon! So i had called MRF Nerul, the MRF distributors for the whole of Mumbai. I had a chat with a mallu chap there, who had great customer service. He called back within 25mins, after contacting a few dealers in the neighborhood to whom they supplied, told me that there is 'Amar Tyre and Battery in Nerul sector1' . He told me to expect to pay b/w 1600-1800. So i went ahead with the 1800 rs assumption, as the tyre was scarce. Anyways i was deeply struck by the owner{Goldy} charging me the lowest at Rs.1600.. Thanks
    Thanks for the resopnse...
I checked out 4 MRF showrooms here and everywhere they quoted 2500 for the rear and 2000/2200 for the front. So i decided to go to the store which Sarvajit suggested. Negotiated the price to 2100 and 1850 (I could have bargained a bit more, but im really bad at it).
When I said my friend bought it for 1800 and 1600 he said, that might be some time ago and now the prices have increased, and told me some reasons, like out of stock and stuff.
I had no options. Changed them for 1850/2100. Atleast better than the MRF showrooms where it was a lot more....

Now the problem, the handling seems to wobble a lot. Very shaky. The mech told since they are new tyres its normal and it would be ok after a few kms of riding. Is it so with the new tyres?

Not normal, check your air pressure, maybe one of your rims needs balancing, not sure if can be done in India though, this is unlikely though, the other thing is to check your chain tension is equal (the same setting) on both sides, if it's incorrectly set this will cause a wobbly feeling.

More than 98 percent of convicted criminals are bread eaters !
Statistics show that more than 75 % of violent crimes are committed within 24 hours of eating bread !
Bread is known to be extremely addictive. Subjects deprived of bread and given only water, actually begged for bread after just two days !
Bread has been proven to kill. Scientists have now uncovered alarming evidence that 100% of the people who eat bread will eventually die !

I have reset the air pressure to 28 front and 33 rear. Even then handling is shaky. I will be going to the SVC tomorrow to sort out the problem. Thanks for the info...

If you are in Mumbai, then you can go to Aashirwad Tyres at Chitra Cinema below the Dadar T.T. (East) bridge for wheel balancing.

          • A couple of days ago a scooter banged from my right side into the front tyre (fortunately happened at low speed).

I had to get the front disc brake changed (Rs.750/-) and one fork oil seal replaced. The entire 2-hour job incl. labor cost me Rs.1487/-.

              Hi no worries.

You still got a hard bargain, esp considering you changed both tyres at the same time! I am bad at bargaining too. Next time check the internet locate a few tyre dealers around you, or at a distance. Call them up get a quote, now you have an idea. Then play your game; like american football, touch down as close to the goal posts{your target price} as you can.

New tyres take nearly 100kms to break-in. So it may feel rigid and less gripping, till then.

As for the wobbling, its quite possible that the labour fellow didnt grease the axle bearings, or that a few are missing. Cant doubt the coneset as it doesnt need to touched for replacing a tyre. Rear side, the chain may be too tight. Or wasnt aligned properly. Could be many reasons, however never heard of computerised wheel balancing for a 2-wheeled motorcycle!

              • Interesting thing is before these posts on tyres started, i was about to post about tyres. As the time for replacing my front tyre is approaching if not approached. It will be replaced for the first time, bike is on the approach to 22.5k kms. So I'm thinking of putting the new spec tyres of the R15v2 90/80-17 to my R15v1. So in effect the width difference b/w the rear and front will be 10{mm?} from 20mm in the original setup.

I would greatly appreciate all help in comprehending the dynamics and how this will effect the handling and banking abilities of the bike. Please advise.

                Original R15 is 80/90-17 and rear 100/80-17
Version 2.0 90/80-17 for front and 130/70-R17 for rear

Additionally would I be right in thinking that the tyres for the R15v2 are less thick, thus will need to be replaced quicker, and also be more prone to punctures by nails and other sharp objects?

From my post a couple of pages back. I strongly advise you not to change tyre specifications.

I installed Duro tyres rear 120/70-17 and front 110/70-17 on the original rims. The cost set me back a whopping Rs.8500/-. (Metro Tyres at Lamington Road)

As I continue to use the original rims, the rear tyre has 'bunched up' and I have ended up with a profile which is higher than the original 100/80 MRF tyre despite the new tyre having a lower profile. The front seems okay. This has slightly raised the height of the bike as well as causing the bike to lean sharper when on the side-stand. There is also a noticeable loss in speed when riding above 100kmph.

Any ideas how much a suitable rim for a 120/70 section tyre will cost me and where is this available in Mumbai or Pune? If available, will this rim and 120/80 tyre fit without modification in the swing-arm?

All in all, I think this is probably one of the most silliest things I have done and do not recommend this to anyone.

I recently did a short 150 Km trip to Pune and the angle of the bike ended up giving me a pain in the neck and back. Not to mention the drop in top speed - couldnt go above 115Kmph.

I have now reverted back to the original MRF Nylogrip Zappers R 100/80 and F 8/90 and the bike is immediately back to its old self. The tyre set cost me 3600/- from the MRF showroom incl. fitting.

                        • Most of the dealerships in bangalore are cheating in that case. I enquired in almost all of the showroooms and they sell ROLON made set for 2.8K, making fools of the owners.
I dont think there is much of a diff b/w both and i wanted to go for the rolon made for 1.4k, but cant find it at that price anywhere in blore.

                              • Problem guys....
When i turn the key to 'ON', the 'coolant temperature warning light' and 'engine trouble warning light' flash and they don't turn off for some 2-3 seconds.

When I press the start switch, at times the tachometer turns 'OFF' and turns 'ON' on its own, sounding like the battery is dead for sometime...This happened for about 3-4 times today itself. But the warning light goes off after 2-3 seconds. What might be the problem????
I might not have put the problem in right words, but hope u people understand correctly whats happening..
