      Hi All,

can someone tell me the difference between a Mineral, Semi Synthetic and Fully Synthetic Engine Oils.. ?

is it ok to change the oil type and the viscosity grades (like, is it ok to use a 10W40 of either mineral, semi or fully synthetic oil? ) ? Mine have completed only 7000 kms so far. Or is it better to stick on to the stock 20W40 mineral type?

Till now, i am using 20W40 - mineral oil ..

Yes you can use 10W40 for your bike without any issues. In fact cold starts would be a little better. You can change the grade used(experiment with diff oils) as long as the (yyWxx) xx remains the same as mentioned by the manufacturer
The number after W is the viscosity grade at higher temperature(may be 100 degrees). The number preceding the W is viscosity at low temp. So a less thick oil(10 in your case) would circulate easily when engine is cold but at higher temp the viscosity would be the same as suggested by the company(40).
And the main difference between mineral, semi synthetic and synthetic is their drain interval. The synthetic lasts longer followed by semi and then mineral.
The synthetic oil also provides better protection as their molecules don't break up even after sustained high speed riding thus, maintaining their viscosity for a longer duration which results into a smoother and less stressed engine.

does it mean that we can use a synthetic oil can be used for a longer period than mineral oil ? for example, synthetic - 5000 kms , semi - 4000 , mineral - 3000 .. ?

(just random numbers for my understanding..)

Yes, synthetic oils can be used for a longer duration(KM wise). The usage again depends upon the way the user rides, if he is an aggressive rider the mineral should be stretched for a maximum of 2000kms. If you are a sane rider stretch it to a maximum of 2500kms and thats it. I change it at 1500km.
Semi can last from anywhere between 2000 to 3500 kms depending on the quality of the oil and the way you ride.
Synthetic oils would serve you good till 4000-5000kms. All these oils can last a little more or little less depending on riding style. The more aggressive the rider the lesser woul the oil last. Changing oil early would only benefit the engine.

Thanks for that DukeDey.. Just one last question, as i said, in my bike its just 7K on odo. is there any problem using a fully synthetic oil this early? or should we wait for atleast 10K to switch the oil type?

You can safely switch to fully synthetic oil without any issues. Synthetic oil is not recommended during the running in phase of the bike so that the extra lubrication it provides does not hamper the proper seating of the piston and the cylinder(Glazing is the term).

Now that your bike has done 7k kms, synthetic would be always more beneficial compared to mineral oil.

                    Motul 3000, 3100 4t: mineral
                    Motul 5100: semi synthetic
                    Motul 7100, 300v : full synthetic

If you plan to go for full synthetic, nothing better than Motul 300v comes to mind. The best oil you can get for your bike imo.

If everybody thinks so, how will a bike become popular??

Not much. GS’s height is 29 mm more than Unicorn. And GS is 20 mm wider. Length, seat height and wheelbase are the same. But GS is weightier.

Wash and wax regularly and keep away from direct sunlight and rain!

You are the person paying for the bike and to use it for at least 3 years to keep your words. After all you are looking for a bike; not for a life partner. Go for Unicorn instead of oscillating between the two bikes.

I know a friend who was in this kind of deep dilemma. Hunk and GS was in his list. I too asked him to buy GS but he selected Hunk. Going through the ownership thread you can see what he got from that bike.

He is not active there nowadays. I think he has sold his precious selection.

Every bike has its own plus and negative points. But, most of us on this Thread I believe are satisfied with this bike.
