  • I am going for the 7th paid service tomorrow. My GS @ 8800 on odo. I am getting more than 52 mileage but recently i observed that it is decreased by 3-5 km's.
    1. Can i need to do Spark plug replacement?
    2. I have not observed any fire in sparkplug adaptor but i too feel some times jerks while riding in top gear. Should I replace GS spark plug adaptor with Slingshot/Zues one?
    3. Any other things need to verify...?

I haven't altered any stock Carb settings till 5th service. while 6th service i am not at svc while servicing else i can assure my GS running with Stock carb settings. My GS always given more than 55 as mileage at both mumbai and Hyd roads.

    Please share your suggestions......

Ask them to clean and adjust the gap of the spark plug (there is a machine for it in the service center). Be sure that it is noted in the job card. The mechanic will replace it if necessary.

Replacing sparkplug adapter with that of SlingShot which costs Rs. 48/-
is a good suggestion as some of our plugs are problematic.

        • @pavan,i hope you are going to saboo for service, since it is srike period in hyd, confirm first if svc mechanic is available because the other day when i went their the mechs are not attending due to bus strike.

as per manual spark plug should be changed every 8000km,costs you rs65.

Even if you want to fine tune the carburator(they got some new digital co analyser) it will cost you rs50(they did on my bike and i am getting 55-57 kmpl. But before going for co analyser, after service test ur milage then go for co analiser,if not satisfied(since lubing of chain also adds to increased milage if you have not lubed in between after your previous sevice)

Is it mandatory to replace it or can I go with the same one.....

If you are changing the sparkplug, try iridium sparkplug as it is a good option. If the FE is satisfactory, CO analyzing is unnecessary because retuning of the carburetor is a must for it and the original setting and better FE is not guaranteed at all.

Lube the chain yourself frequently with lithium based grease and oil. I am using Castrol Premium Formula Gel grease and their 140 EP Rear Axle oil. Be very careful if the lower half of the chain cover is removed to lube the chain.

Sure ... I will confirm by phone for servicing.
I dont need CO analyzer tuning as i am getting morethan 50 mileage. If it further drops then will go for mileage test and CO Gas analyzer.

I haven't lubed any thing after last service.

Thanks vishnu for your reply. I will ask the engineer to adjust the gap.
I will replace my adapter with slingshot one.

I haven't mentioned valve clearence in none of the 6 services. Is it mandatory?

Regularly lubricate the chain and other necessary parts. Refer page 6-7 of the manual.

As per manual,6-4&-5 there are 5 activities marked astric, which should be asked by customer to Suzuki dealer (Specially ask ur svc to do the maintenance items marked) and valve clearance is one of them.
And you know these mech are more concerned about completing fastly to attend other bikes,so it is our duty to remind them.

I have met gs owner here with odo 22,300km and he is still on the stock spark plug and when i told him about the recommendation he changed it immediately.and the svc people also say we can run the spark plug for 15000km don't know whom to trust, anyhow since the rice is rs 65,i thought why not replace.

i absolutely agree , cause they reaaly are not affected by the performance of our bikes so it is our duty to get it done.here is the check list,

The lesser valve clearance causes improper heating of valves which lead to its melting and greater clearance causes tappet sound.

In case of valve clearance, the advise in the user’s manual is to “inspect and ADJUST IF NECESSARY”; not “INSPECT AND ADJUST”.

Since you are not facing any problem by the valve clearance, trying to adjust it is like breaking a glass to fix it with glue. And instead of bothering about it, make sure that the correct quantity of oil is filled in the bike.

You can continue with the spark from for some more thousand kms but if you think the replacement is necessary, do so. The price is about Rs. 100/-, not 65/-. Buy an iridium sparkplug which costs Rs. 550/- plus Rs. 150/- as packing and forwarding charges. Contact [email protected] for it.

This is the funniest demand I have heard in whole of my life and I wonder how greedy some service centers are.

The best thing you can do is not going to that service centre for any works including servicing in future. How can you believe that they are servicing the bike in the proper way or some of your bike’s parts are not replaced with faulty ones?

Collect a used saline glucose bottle from a hospital and buy 1 or 2 meters of fuel pipe – it is available in the car/two wheeler accessories shops – and use it to check the mileage.

my intention was not to go for adjustment every service, but be in tune with the manual recommendation and just remind the svc so that they will take appropiate action as needed and if required.

mine was replaced two months back and the cost was rs 65 as quoted in the bill, may be it was old stock/the price has risen with inflation

One small doubt.....how can we indentify these or symptons of "The lesser valve clearance causes improper heating of valves which lead to its melting and greater clearance causes tappet sound." (tappet sound.as i know is there will be some loose sheet flapping from engine, correct me if am wrong)

                          @valcun

If iam not wrong, you have met with small accident with damage to tank and you have repaired it.In that case tank canot be replaced so go for alternative(sorry if this is not the case)

You have storage(baggage)options like front tank bag and saddle bags as a flexible or Motorcycle Luggage box for permanent fix

Both these diseases spread by some rodents diminished slowly but still I strongly believe that none of the propagators did retune the carburetor as they knew what the result will be.

Sorry; I know nothing about the valve clearance and tappet.

Vishnu is right. Dont try to adjust your carb, if you dont know what you are doing. Mileage is not the only thing to be considered while tuning your carb. Tuning too lean for higher mileage might result in engine wear. If you get anywhere between 45 to 50, that should be good enough for a 150cc.
