  • Divya bro: now that the topic of drag has come up, remember you had told me that the difference of pick up when a bike equipped with a filter accelerates is marginal compared to stock? I strongly recommend you to take my ride for a spin in this sunday's G2G. Its not that am racing in the streets always. Many drags happen on that nandi stretch and on the NH7. On one such drag as i mentioned earlier, though a 220 overtook me, i could catch up with him and also pass him easily. (STOCK P220). And r15s were no where to be seen in my rear view. The drag was approx 3kms with just 2 humps on the nandi stretch(NH7). And when we were finished, all the while, the 220 guy was just behind me occasionally overtaking me but in the end, i was in the lead and then after him came the r15v1. (not v2). I attained a top of 129kmph. The 220 guy claimed his reached a max of 137kmph. This drag happened before our nandi G2G. However there may be a difference in performance of r15v1 and v2. Also the filter has made quite some difference in pick up.

PS: Could this high speed drag be a reason for my engine over-heating issues??

    • Hey Guys, I have a very peculiar question and a fact to share.
I bought my ZMR in late Dec'12, and it's labelled as "Hero".
Since everybody here keeps talking about touching speeds of about 130 kmph, I was expecting my ZMR to do the same.
However, I must mention that I am quite shocked and upset because my ZMR stops at 120 kmph exactly, even while going downhill....
I am guessing there is some kind of a speed limiter in the new ZMR, or else they designed the ecu this way... Whatever may be the case, I am totally horrified by this.
So, I would like to ask if someone else has faced such situation?? Or is it just me ??
And yes, please note that I rode my ZMR below 4k till 500 kms and below 5k till 1200 kms + 2 services completed + total km done=1800 km

I nowhere attain that speed in my bike bro... Maximum it goes upto 120 in a 1km drag Is it coz of the filter? What filter you use? Have you done any ecu remappings? Whats the mileage of your angel?
RVM is a good tool to see your buddys losing behind while racing :)

A lot of conditions matter to ride above the 120kmph on the zmr viz. the wind direction, riding position, quality of the road, uphill/downhill and even your physique. For a tall guy like me the top speed achieved so far is 122kmph that too on a steep downhill on the NH7(crouching doesnt help me though). So dont worry about the redline figure and enjoy your ride. cheers.

My Bike when it was stock topped 129kmph.. I changed the rear sprocket and attained a top speed of 133kmph on the Chandigarh Ambala Highway NH1.. RTR180 was racing me.. my friend of course and he was no where seen near me.. he claimed top speed on his speedo 126kmph and trust me I was faar away from him.. thats the only mod i made for my bike and I am going to shift back to stock sprockets as I am missing the chain noise and the smoothness of my bike.. but yeah.. the speedo error is very less in ZMR when compared to the other bikes I had a KnN fitted on her.. but i didnt find much difference hence I removed it.. also I didn't like the sound.. my suggestion would be not to do any modifications as they are not always the way we expect it to be.. But I guess you can go for the rear chain sprocket mod.. but you will have to sacrifice on the acceleration.. not much but minute difference..

            • Karizma Facts.

              1. You try to hit top in 5th then bike dies at 120k.
              2. To hit a true top of 130~140k you have to rock that 4th gear.
              3. Free flow filter will just shift torque up the rev range, meaning you can easily hit hard limiter in 4th gear, but if you try attaining top in 5th it will be pathetic.

Last rides experience, while hitting the Salem highway, my friends RTR ABS was doing 126k when I overtook him at the time my speedo was showing 115k, throttle was at WOT and I was in 5th gear. Wasnt trying to attain top speed at all, cause if I wanted to do that I would've rocked the 4th gear hard before shifting to 5th. My speedo was stuck at 115~120k and I was gaining speed, and my friend's ride was dead stuck at 126k, he said I was atleast doing 130~140k. I believe the change in speedo reading is due to my upsize.

Now before with stock tires, I could hit 130k speedo read in 4th gear max, never tested 5th gear cause we dont have good roads for that in Kollam.

Im running on UNI foam based free flow filter, with 140 Mains and stock pilot, with needle raised and return spring shortened. And heres the error in my tuning, just a few mm's before WOT bike keeps accelerating, but the moment I WOT, it hits brick wall, meaning its rich at WOT, but in a way thats good for touring.

              EDIT-
I weigh 114Kgs and my RTR ABS friend weighs 55kg's.

I was not sure if I was the only one who faced this kinda issue where the speed I over take another bike.. (P220, RTR180, FZ16) but you are right..

i look at their speedo and the speed they are moving at is indicating more than my speedo.. me doing 110kmph overtaking them and their speedo showing 120+ (P220) speedo error is a crucial factor why ZMR is a big put down... i guess people would have been happy with the ZMR if the speedo meter showed a huge margin of error.. lol.. don't get offended.. its just what I feel that people only talk about speed.. speed and speed... they don't understand the other factors or the requirements of what the other bikers need I am a happy ZMRian.. Wonderful bike which fulfills all my needs...

I have had lots of experience where a P220 beats me hands down.. and where I beat P220s hands down.. never a RTR180 beat me till now.. nor R15.. maybe the stretch was not enough for the R15's powerband to be visible..

Ashwin has already mentioned why fellow riders' ZMRs have stuck to 120 kmph.
To hit the indicated >125 kmph, one needs to do 60 kmph in 3rd and around 100 in 4th. This means redlining in 3rd and 4th is mandatory. Remember, peak power is at 7k RPM.
Hence, hit the red line at 8.2k RPM and upshift. The tacho will fall to 6.5k RPM which falls around the peak torque range. This will ensure you get a good pull and with favourable road and wind conditions with a 70 kg rider, he'll hit that >125kmph.

Regarding FFEs and after market filters, what they do is allow more air to enter the engine. This essentially richens up the mixture and leads to faster explosions resulting in better pickup and some reduction in the economy. Since our bikes are FI tech, we don't see much difference. Try this on a ZMA, then you'll need bigger jets to complement the change.
Point taken, I'm taking your ride for a spin tomorrow.

Simran saab, nothing to worry, Its only a sticker change. Nothing differs in the internals. Please go through the above points of mine as well as Ashwin's post.

Anyone knows any dealer in Bangalore where i can get a Osram H4 55W halogen OR a Philips Extreme Vision ? & BTW, which one is really better.. While some seem to be disappointed with OSRAM, some are not happy with Philips in rain (as it is more on white side)..

Divya, As you are from Bangalore, got any idea on the dealers ? I stay in Old Airport Road...

And when it comes to speedo error I dont think theres much cause heres a GPS read I took when redlining in 4th gear at the time bike didnt touch the hard limiter, meaning I could've gone faster, but due to the 180kg's on board weight(Me and Pillion) the bike didnt climb as quickly as we expected.

                              This means:-
                              1. Osram NB illuminates the road better in rains.
2, Philips looks sexier due to the blue-ish tinge (ever so slightly!)

Whoa! 100 kmph in 3rd? What was the tacho reading at that point of time? I simply don't have the balls to rev the nuts out of the bike in this fashion.
