    1. I had to change the rear brake pad at 9000 km and now at 13500 km. Is this Normal? I used the genuine Yamaha spare from the showroom.

    2. Mileage drastically dropped from 41 Kmpl to 32 kmpl in cities after the periodic service done at 10,000. Complained about it to the service center guys, however they haven't been able to fix it yet. I do rev up the engine to over 7k rpm every now and then right from the time I bought it.

    3. The chain keeps loosening after every 300-400 km or so, Do I have to change the chain and sprocket?

    4. Gear shifting has become very annoying, not at all smooth and sometimes I have to literally kick the shift pedal for it to shift, which is fixed temporarily during service and goes back to the same condition after a few hundreds of kms.

Apart from this the bike is doing good, no problem whatsoever with the pickup and speed. Was hoping to an answer from an expert like JOEL
Bro, most of your queries have nothing to do with this thread.
but still ill answer it, but im not joel though

Please post future queries in the r15 ownership thread.

    so here goes the answers..

1.The brake pads time limit are fully depending upon the usage, if you use more brakes then the pads tend to wear out more faster, or it can also happen that the pads are contineously touching the disc thus causing the wear in such small interval, so get that checked. And yes low quality stuffs also wear out fast.

2.Well the mileage issue can be caused because you rev up a lot , you live in the higher range of the rpm thus consuming more fuel and the problems you mentioned in 3,4 is also reasons for lesser mileage. Improper chain slackness and dirty oil all causes drop in mileage. So its probably time to get your bike serviced.

    3. Chain loosening is a issue to be careful about, if it gets too loose you know what can happen, so get it tightened and also ask the mechanics if its time to get a replacement, its hard to say without seeing it person.

4.Gear shifting is hard, classic case of oil going bad, get an oil change of right grade and your fit to go.

    Cheers mate

1: Many people lose brake pads earlier due to riding with foot rested on the brake lever. Avoid this habit and brake pads should last longer. Although, I've heard that R15's rear brake pads wear faster, due to some reason.

2 and 4: Have you changed you engine oil at right times? Is it topped up, to the required limit? And is it of the Yamaha recommended grade?

3: Haven't heard of it. Maybe an R15 owner should help here?

And please don't post at multiple threads just to grab attention. I've deleted the copied posts of yours, at other threads. Kindly comply. Thanks.

        1. For regular use the front pads average around 8,000 to 9,000 kms and for the rear pads the average is around 17,000 to 18,000 kms. Which is a fair bit of use.

        4. My advice is that the chain be removed and the links be examined. The chain seems to be giving away due weak links. This is assuming that the slackness is happening inspite of proper and regular cleaning and lubrication and is being adjusted to proper tolerance. The problem also occurs if any of the 'O' rings on any links goes bust. The most likely reason for busted 'O' ring is due to use of solvents to clean the chain.

Can you provide more details? Is there any problem with straight line stability? Is there any problem is stability in turns? Does the bike feel 'loose' or is bouncing around the place?

Please provide any many details as possible and as accurately as possible.

            • nothing feels out of the ordinanry, only that the other day when i was riding with my friend as pillion we went over a big speed bump and the suspension compressed completely and it felt like the suspension hit against its own spring...
Last edited by revvhard; 05-27-2012, 12:52 AM. Reason: suspension has only one spring :D

                      @Krishna,
I have a hard time finding the right thread, so If you could find me one and post the link here, I would be grateful. I can post the same question there and get more answers.

I had got the brake pads changed from an authorized service center in kerala and they used genuine yamaha spare.

There has been no change in my riding methods to have such a change in the mileage, I have been riding my bike in the same way from the time I bought the bike. revving hadnt affected my mileage till the time I did the periodic maintenance at 10,000 kms done by yamaha folks which includes cleaning the filters and fork overhaul, etc etc...

About the chain change, I am not relying on the service center, because they'd be happy to make a buck out of you if you point that question at them. I live in bangalore and most mechanics here dont know how to repair an R15 apart from the service center folks.i'll have to find a good mechanic elsewhere.

and for the oil, I use the best in class synthetic oil recommended by yamaha folks and I get my bike serviced every 3000 kms or 3 months so that i dont lose out on the warranty since yamaha insists.

Sometimes the parts from authorised svc can also be of low quality, some have manufacturing defects, so its a once in many kinda situation. So really not much we can control there.

Yup, you can just check by yourself for checking wear and tear of the sprocket and decide if its time for replacement.

And about the oil change, bro its not if its world class or anything, if you rev a lot like you said you do then the oil takes a beating ,its just that based on it being ss or fs it lasts longer, though the maximum range you get for the fs itself is 6-7k kms under normal riding and for reved up rides its shorter, so its probably time to get oil changed.

                          Cheers

                          • Ownership Review after 19500kms

                            Hi All,

I have been a part of xbhp from many years but this only made me to buy right bike for my passion.

I was always a sports bike freak but as everyone is tied up due to budget constraints same was mine too.

My 1st bike was Kawasaki Aspire 2001 . Still running and gives good mileage of 60+kmpl.Rode this bike for 10yrs and happy with low maintenance.

Suddenly an urge to buy an top end bike with all features like
                            1.Fuel Injector
                            2.Dual Disc Brake
                            3.Mono suspension
                            4.Good Quality
                            5. Stable at high speed,etc
MOST IMP WITH IN BY BUDGET i.e approx 1.5 lakhs.
Suddenly Yamaha R15 was launched in India with a Tag line of 1.15 L on road in Mumbai.

Seriously followed the Review of R15 on xbhp, which made me to buy this bike.Average was never a concern for me. So Yes it is R15.

When i was planning to buy this bike i was nil, no money to buy it.As i had joined MNC IT company recently. Enjoyed life completely so no saving at all.
But i had made my mind. So planning and plotting started. But to get a loan we need to pay 20% doenpayment which was 35k. From where to bring this amount?? I Checked with my Credit card company for Personal loan of 1.20 L.
They approved it as i used to use Credit card rigorously.
With in 3 days loan was approved and made the booking for R15 on 20th july 2010. bike was ready for delivery instantly, But wanted to bring it on nice mohurat i.e 26th July 2010 i brought the bike. It was raining nicely and brought it in rain.

When drove this bike it was very stable in wet roads, handling was superb.
Pick up was nice. Tyre grips was awesome, Braking was cool. Suspension was very nice. Lights were killer. Fuel injector showed it's right use of fuel.

THE MOST LOVELY THING OF BIKE I LIKE IS IT'S REAR VIEW MIRRORS.
Bike shows the real power after 6k rpm and it is a boon riding it on highways.
i find very easy to maneuver it in traffic but riding position is not good for city traffics.

Lights are excellent in night. Braking is awesome when to brake at 100+kms/hr speed it does it's job very well.

I am done many 500kms trip in a day and the every word said above is felt in long drives.

I get an average of 38-40kmpls only as i ride at 90-110kms/hr averagely. But i had got good average when i tried to keep it at 50kms/hr.

Top Speed i achevied on my R15 is 129kms/hr don't know how people get 132-134-140kms/hr speed . This might be because i am 80kgs.

As far as servicing is concern parts are very expensive compare to other bikes and it's segment. Very bad experience with Dombivili AIMS Yamaha Service center. They always charged more than what the rate is. Front Brake pad for Rs 1250 Rear Brake pad for Rs950, engine oil Rs790, etc This is from 2010 to 2012 Jan. When i use to hear that friends on this xbhp use to say that Front brake pad cost them Rs 460 and Rear Rs420, engine oil for 4xx.
My brake pads both last approx 4.5kms. I have a habbit of braking both ones at a time. Never skid with this bike as i know it's limitation. Tilting it is fun on highways while turns.

Till now i have changed only once arear tyre only, front is still best.

Oil filter changed once and oil change in all service.

Now my bike in May 2010 after 19 months and 19500kms

Yamaha parts are costly but it's worth's every penny.QUALITY IS BEST!

Show decided to service it in Koparkhairne Alka Yamaha Service Center. They are reasonable and good work too.

The problem that i face now is some kind of misalignment in my bike, some one say Kone set needs to be changed.

Next time i will be changing the Kone set and see. Some say just need handle settings. Tried setting but still it's the some.

People still give a nice look when R15 overtakes thier car or bike.

Once rear tyre had flatten when i was doubled seat and the tubeless tyre and R15 delta frame helped me to handle it at speed of 90kms/hr. I love this bike.

This is a best engineered bike in reasonable budget.

Wanted a broad tyres on my bike too but stock is best also.!!

At last a very HAPPY R15 OWNER !!!!

Next would be Ninja 250 or HD 883 only...

i have bought a second hand yamaha r15 2008 , done 22000kms run...i feel my bike is not giving me same power as other r15..it goes hardly 102-106Kmph on 5th n 6th gear...

it has a good pick up , smooth engine, smooth bike ..but the top speed annoy's me...

kindly help what can be the issue??

                              • Check whether the chain set has been replaced or is at the end of its life as 22K kms. is generally time for replacement.
If this is not the problem, check for clogged air filter, worn out clutch plates&so on.
