2 weeks ago, my friends R15 was over heating. The engine check light came up and coolant circuit was working fine. The service centre guys fiddles for half a day and could not solve a thing. Then they told my friend its fine (coz the engine had cooled by then) and ask him to leave. I dropped in and I checked the bike with the FID. The diagnostic mode showed the engine temp and I checked for any faulty sensor. The temp rose from 75deg (normal at cold start before a warm-up) to a heady 100+ deg. The engine check light showed up again. The engine further heated up to 118deg and it was almost next to a seizure. Showed this to the dealer and he tried to argue. I explained and then he could not talk much.
The radiator fan wasnt kickin-in past 85 deg temp, hence the over heating.
Checked the fan, it was working...so trouble shooted easily that it was the fan relay.
With an FID you can tell exactly whats wrong and you get a lot of inputs.
That 80 bucks relay could have seized the engine and costed 8k for fixing.
So if i read it correct, this tool not only gives the diagnostic options but also custom tuning options...
So is this something that we would need if we plonk in extra accessories like the exhausts or a air filter?

(IMO this deserves a new thread.... the ownership thread is plagues with a lot of crapola)

Oh wow! that's a relief! was wondering how the service centre guys would fix the issues when they crop up. So far my bike's fine, touch wood. But the SS guys are clueless as usual.

What's the price for the FID? 200-300$ was it? i think it was mentioned a few pages back?

      does anyone know it?

IT costs 240rs for a big can. You also get a degreaser at the same price .

I had post regarding the FID . But no one seems to be interested. Group buy will be cheaper .Buying a single FID is expensive will cost you around 10k . IF there are 5 fids can get the price down to 9k .

@satyenpoojary what do you mean by custom tuning ???

IF you plonk a air filter and a tuned exhaust you will have to change your AFR . For doing that the FID is a must.

            • We have a few kits with us. FYI, none of these kits are gonna be available anymore. Just a few left. Almost all the ASS dont have this.
I took one to a dealer and he was looking at it like some magical device. Morons, they service R1s and MT01s and donno whats an FID.
Yes, it can help you change your own AFR when you fit an exhaust or modify the engine or add an air filter. You can increase the CO by almost 4.5%. Stock engines are at 3.5%, so you can make it as rich as 8% which is equivalent to jetting an engine rich by almost 3 times. The injector can also flow that much more.
You can also make the CO lean to as low as 0.25%.
Its an awesome tool. It can diagnose and also change the AFR.

Ok thanks for the price. By degreaser which one do u mean? Specifically for the carb is it? After K-Top i feel i would need to clean the injector because when i open up air filter i found a ton of dust inside and the air filter red was red in color and insides of the air box there are holes to drain water if any and they had let in ample dust due to the roads. Even though my bike has run only 2.5K another trip back from K-top should ensure i clean the injector!

cyclo products arent widely available in mlore. how much does a smaller one cost. I wont be needing a bigger one. And what parts do u need to remove to access the injector. Im yet to strip my bike down. Waiting for semesters to get over to strip down and inspect it, and replace rusted nuts and bolts and do touch ups for the surface rusting problem before the rains and touring.

Maybe if i find some 10 r15 owners interested in buying i will be investing in one! Else need to get a job this june and buy one for myself (any recruiters reading this, i'm available for work) lol But given the state of affairs of R15 owners in my city they wouldnt bother spending a penny on something useful and but buy all kinds of cosmetic crap from yamaha.

Thaks a ton for the knowledge man, is it usable with a RTR fi or carb one. Just want to know.

                      • @Kwokfist - U dont need that cleaner for now man. If u wanna clean the injector, u get seperate injector cleaners from 3M and bardahl. For the manifold, u only need a petrol wash. Like I've told you, dont get too deep into unwanted thoughts. Just do whats needed.

Nope, its manufacturer specific. This FID is used to tuned all Yamaha FI engines.
likewise, TVS should supply their own FID to the TVS dealers.

                          • Does this also help a stock setup with no changes to the Air filter or Cat con (for environment's sake). I mean does making the engine run a bit richer help increase the low end and keep the engine cooler.

Yes sir! wont get into unwanted thoughts . But i plan on doing Koda again. It may not require cleaning immediately but another trip to K-top and im sure its gonna need a cleaning session. My last trip to koda had covered the bike under a layer of dirt which took 4 hours to clean off and the air filter was a mess! and the box had a thick layer of dust inside it! So my concern. If its okay to run the bike for few thousand kilometers more i have no issues but then again i dont expect the SS guys to do any of this ever!
